Enterprise Software Development with Java by Markus Eisele

This is a blog about software development for the enterprise. It focuses on Java Enterprise Edition (J2EE/Java EE).

Beside this, I blog about Oracle WebLogic and GlassFish Server and other technologies that hit my road.

Java Mission Control 5.2 is Finally Here! Welcome 7u40!

It has been a while since we last heard of this fancy little thing called Mission Control. It came all the way from JRockit and was renamed to Java Mission Control. This is one of the parts which literally survived the convergence strategy between HotSpot and JRockit. With today's Java SE 7 Update 40 you can actually use it again.

Java Mission Control 5.2
The former JRockit Mission Control (JRMC) is now called Java Mission Control (JMC) and is a tools suite which includes tools to monitor, manage, profile, and eliminate memory leaks in your Java application without introducing the performance overhead normally associated with tools of this type. Up to today the 5.1 version was available within the Oracle HotSpot downloads which could only be received by paying customers from the Oracle Support Website. Todays release is the first release of Java Mission Control that is bundled with the Hotspot JDK! The convergence project between JRockit and Hotspot has reached critical mass. With the 7u40 release of the Hotspot JDK there is an equivalent amount of Flight Recorder information available from Hotspot. Read the full article here.

Markus Eisele   ACE Director published several WebLogic 12c articles:

Quickstart WebLogic 12c with NetBeans 7.1 RC 2

WebLogic server 12c is out since a few days. It is for "naked" Java dev – the fancy Fusion Middleware stuff will move on to 12c down the line. So, this is basically my release to run. Today I am giving you a quick start with latest NetBeans 7.1 (RC 2) and WebLogic to run the Pet Catalog example with MySQL . To read the full article please visit Markus Eiseles’s blog.

Installing and Using the NEW WebLogic 12 Maven Plug-In for Deployment

WebLogic 12c Community Feedback

Oracle Announces Availability of Oracle WebLogic Server 12c – first experiences!

Oracle announces Oracle WebLogic Server 12c the latest release of the #1 application server in this very minute. In exactly one hour from now you can attend the online launch, Developer Deep-Dive, December 1, 11:00 a.m. PT ( Register here). Read the complete press release. I am quoted there, too:

"Oracle WebLogic Server 12c is exactly what I have been waiting for. Developing Java EE 6 applications for Oracle W! ebLogic Server has never been easier. Development, deployment, management and productivity have now been taken to the next level, which makes Oracle WebLogic Server 12c, in my opinion, the most reliable Java EE Markus Eiseleapplication server ever." said Markus Eisele, a German Software Architect and Consultant.

Oracle WebLogic 12c – Key Points from Online Launch Event

This evening I watched both Oracle WebLogic Server 12c launch webcasts: the first was an overview session led by Hasan Rizvi (Senior VP for OFM and Java) and the second was a more developer-oriented discussion mainly delivered by Will Lyons (Director of Product Management for WLS). You can download slides and recordings of the webcasts by clicking the Oracle link on the image, and the Q&A responses are supposed to be published soon too.

This post is a summary of the key points from both sessions combined, with my usual bias towards middleware architects and production administrators (rather than developers). Note it includes slides from the presentations which are now publicly available, but were prefaced with Oracle’s standard "Safe Habour" statement which means you should not make any decisions based on them until 12c is actually available (expected to be around next Thursday by the way).

UK readers please note that Will Lyons, one of the launch event speakers, will be giving Oracle’s first public, in-person WebLogic Server 12c presentation in his keynote this Monday at 10am at the UKOUG 2011 Conference!

Weblogic 12c launched december 1st

On december 1st, Weblogic 12c was launched with two online presentations:

The plan is that the release will be available for download on OTN sometime next week (beginning december 5th).

This release has over 200 new features, and it has a focus on Cloud readiness. The cloud could be Oracle Public Cloud with Java Services, or a Private cloud.

The key new capabillities are around:

  • Java EE 6 and Developer Productivity
  • Simplified Deployment and Management with Virtualization
  • Integrated Traffic Management
  • Enhanced High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Much Higher Performance
  • Seamless Upgrade

I will go into details on some of them.

WebLogic 12c released!

At December the 1st, 2011, Oracle announced it’s new major release, the 12c release. As Oracle added the i (internet) at its 8 release, the g(gridcomputing) at its 10 release, now the focus will be on the c(cloudcomputing).

Many new features come out of the fact that Oracle has made its key application server ready for the cloud, that is, ready for to run on enigineered systems, in fact its own Exalogic machine, Oracle’s solution for implementing the cloud.

So let’s take a look what this new release brings us, in this blogpost. There are several new features available in the 12c

New or enhanced WebLogic 12c features

  • JAVA EE 6 support all kinds of JEE6 specifications are implemented like :
    • JSF 2.0,Java Servlets 3.0 JPA 2.0 and EJB 3.1.
    • Managed Beans 1.0
  • WebLogic 12c also supports supports Java SE 7 (and Java SE 6).
    • Java language optimizations and Internationalization
    • Client and server support
    • SSL/TLS 1.2 in JSSE to support JAVA Socket Transport security
    • Converged Java VM:JRockit and HotSpot are  inc Michel Schildmeijerorporated with the best features from both. The JVM convergence will be a multi-year process, which was confirmed during my presence at Oracle’s Publisher Seminar 2011 during OOW
