Reusing and extending ADF BC entities from common model by Red Samurai

This post is about ADF architecture and better application structuring with EO reuse from common model. I describe how to implement additional requirements to common model in extended ADF BC Entities. Great power of ADF framework - reusability. You should reuse as much as possible, this would simplify maintenance and future development of your application. I will be talking about ADF BC Entity Objects (EOs) reuse in this post. I would recommend to keep EOs in common model project and reuse them across the application. Fair requirement would be to have slightly different EO for specific use case - instead of creating new EO for the same DB table, we could extend original EO and implement specific changes. As for example, we may have different set of business rules, different doDML logic.
Sample application developed for this post includes Common Model library and Main application - eoreuse.zip. Common model library is based on Employees and Jobs EOs, associations and EO implementation generic class. Read the complete article here.

WebLogic Stuck Thread Case – Large Fetch Generated by get row ADF BC method by Red Samurai

This post is not about a bug, but rather about hidden underwater stone to avoid. Based on my previous use case for WebLogic Stuck Thread - Reproducing WebLogic Stuck Threads with ADF CreateInsert Operation and ORDER BY Clause, I will describe one more possible scenario for the same issue. This will be related to ADF BC API misuse, often it is unclear what side effect could produce at first friendly looking method. This method - getRow(key).
Please download complete sample application, if you are interested to reproduce it in your environment -  LargeFetchApp_v3.zip.
This sample provides a method to generate dummy data for regions, around 10000 rows. View Object is using ORDER BY to display records in ascending order:

There is custom method created in AM implementation class. This method is calling ADF BC API getRow(key) method. Nothing dangerous at first, but here I'm using a key of the last record from the rowset - 10099. You may think, this is just a method to get a row by key.

Yes true, but what it does for you - before returning one row by key, it will fetch all rows until this row into memory. It travels through each row one by one, until it gets a row with defined key. This may consume a lot of memory, especially if rowset is large and row with defined key is somewhere at the end of the rowset. Example of such method. Read the complete article here.

Mobilise your Business Applications with Oracle Mobile Platform

Whole kit to build your mobile applications from ADF to SOA and BPM:

Mobile? Mobile? Yes! Yes!
We built a sample mobile app in about two weeks using Oracle ADF Mobile. The app helped users find and organize all the Oracle Application Development Framework-related sessions at Oracle OpenWorld. With Oracle ADF Mobile, we used one code base to deploy to two platforms. Easy to build, easy to deploy - and as one code base - easy to maintain. The app is currently available at the Apple AppStore and Google Play. Simply search for “Oracle ADF In Touch” to check it out - it’s free.

Webcast: What’s New for Oracle Application Development Framework 12c Anxious to get your hands on the latest Oracle development tools? Then this webcast is for you! We'll explore Oracle Application Development Framework 12c - the latest release.

WLST create user and assign to group by togotutor

In this blog post we are going to write a WLST script, which will connect to the running admin server and then create a user and assign the user to a group. The following code can be downloaded from the following link:

1. The first step is to create a properties file and name it as domain.properties. We are going to add the values to this properties file and the WLST script is going to read the values from properties file and will take action. Read the complete article here.

A first look at Robot Framework by Mark Nelson

As we start to assemble the tools we need to implement Continuous Delivery, one area we need to look at is selecting a testing framework.  Now, we are going to want to use a range of different testing tools, depending on what we want to test and how, but we ideally would have some kind of framework that helps to abstract those tools and gives us a single place to go to execute tests.robot-report

In looking for a test framework, I have been considering the following:

  • Preferably it should have some kind of backing to ensure its longevity and continued development,
  • Ideally I should not have to learn a new language to use the tool – since most Fusion Middleware users are already using Java and Python (for WLST scripts) – those two seem like the best choices,
  • It should be extensible, so I can add new types of test tools if I want to,
  • It should integrate well with Maven and Hudson, since those are already part of our ecosystem,
  • It should allow me to use a wide range of testing tools to execute the actual tests.

So after a bit of research, what I have come up with is Robot Framework.  It is backed by Nokia Siemens Networks, it uses a simple text/table based test specification approach, Python and Java are supported for extension, there are Maven and Hudson plugins, and there are a wide range of plugins for many common testing tools like Selenium, Swing, iOS, Android, and support for OS integration (processes), XML, HTTP, SOAP, etc. Read the complete article here.

Before we can describe all the new features of WebLogic 12.1.3 & 12.1.4 and compare this to the 12.1.2 version we should first take a look at the 10.3.6 version. WebLogic 10.3.6 is still the latest 11g version but Oracle will support 10.3.6 till 2018 and extended support till 2021. So Oracle’s Fusion Apps and we have enough time to migrate to WebLogic 12.1.X. Oracle also promised that the upgrade should be easy.  That being said we can take look at the WebLogic 12.1.X features.
Last summer Oracle already released WebLogic 12.1.2 which has since WebLogic 12.1.1 been certified for Java EE 6 and it looks like the Java EE 7 certification is still far away, so Oracle updated the 12.1.2 version with some badly needed frameworks like WebSockets. To make the developer experience more complete Oracle added more support for Maven and it comes with a utility to synchronize a Maven repository with all the needed WebLogic libraries.
12.1.2 is also the first release, which comes with Fusion Middleware infrastructure components. For now FMW 12.1.2 contains ADF & OWSM and comes with Enterprise Manager & MDS.
WebLogic 12.1.2 replaced the BEA installer and the BSU patching utilities with the Oracle Universal Installer and the OPatch utilities for applying patches.  To make it even more easier it just comes in one taste ( no Java included or a specific Operating System installer ).  Just one big jar file for WebLogic with Coherence or one for WebLogic, Coherence and FMW.
WebLogic 12.1.2 introduced Dynamic Clusters, Elastic JMS and integrated Coherence configuration and management. Dynamic Clusters is a great feature to extend the WebLogic Cluster with Managed Servers based on a Server Template. For this we only need to change a parameter on the cluster and the new Managed Servers are distributed over the NodeManagers. To use this feature your blades need to have enough free resources to handle the extra Managed Servers.

Elastic JMS can be combined with Dynamic Clusters, this way we only need to create 1 JMS server, target this to the cluster and every Cluster node will have its own JMS server.
When we look at the announced features of WebLogic 12.1.3 and 12.1.4 we can see that Oracle continues on this road.

WebLogic 12.1.3 will be the first version for many FMW 12c products like Oracle SOA Suite 12c and probably come in one big jar. Read the complete article here.

WebLogic 12c Does WebSockets – Getting Started by Steve Millidge

With the release of W ebLogic 12.1.2 websocket support has come to WebLogic. In this blog post we'll show you how to write a simple websockets echo example just to get you started.
Unfortunately the api released with WebLogic is not the JEE7 JSR356 api, which I suspect will come when WebLogic gets JEE7 compliance. On the plus side it's a pretty simple api.
In this blog I'm using NetBeans 7.4 and I've started off by creating a basic web project and I've called it Echo. . Read the complete article here.

WebLogic & FMW Provisioning update by Amis

Already a year has passed since I wrote about WebLogic and Fusion Middleware provisioning with Puppet. In this year provisioning got a great boost with the popularity of DevOps and provisioning tools like Puppet, Chef or in combination with  Vagrant & Oracle VirtualBox.

Provisioning without tooling can be hard for companies when they also do their own development or have many applications with its own lifecycle. For example applications can have different database vendors/ versions / types like SQL, NoSQL or Big Data and can run on different Middleware servers like .Net, JBoss or WebLogic with or without OSB & SOA Suite.

Plus with loosely coupled architecture the application probably interacts with a few databases, have a few middleware components and integration with other applications. Combine this with a new trend to have components on premise or in the cloud, you know it can take some time to set this up.

One environment is not enough for the whole application lifecycle, you need to have a development, test and acceptance environment and combine this with Continuous integration and deployment. I personally noticed that projects are heavily delayed cause there is no environment or the environment is not like the production environment.

Provisioning was a hot topic on Oracle Openworld 2013, many OOW sessions mentioned or talked about it and in this article we will talk about what is possible now and what the future will be.

Screen Shot 2013-10-26 at 16.18.25First Oracle feels our pain and is slowing changing WebLogic. In WebLogic 12.1.2 we can already see the first results.
like

  • 1 WebLogic + Coherence jar for all Operating Systems, 32 or 64 architecture and without a JDK
  • 1 jar with WebLogic, Coherence and FMW infrastructure
  • 1 way of installing (OUI) and patching (OPatch)
  • Better WebLogic Maven support, this way we can install WebLogic or create a Domain from Maven. Read the complete article here.
