The Most Interesting NetBeans Release is Out: 7.3 by Adam Bien

NetBeans 7.3 - probably the most interesting release ever is out. I use 7.3 dev builds since JavaOne 2012 and completely switched all of my HTML development to NetBeans (from Koda 2, Espresso, BBEdit, TextMate etc.). NetBeans 7.3 comes with great support for CSS 3, HTML 5, JavaScript, Chrome Plugin combined with GIT, SVN and Mercurial as well as integrated issue trackers. The CSS, HTML formatting and code completions alone were worth for me to drop commercial tools in favor of NetBeans.

Java EE, Java FX and Java SE are also well supported but this is nothing new :-).

If you are new to NetBeans, do not be disappointed. After a single double-click you will have to start to work immediately. You woould not get any extra days to download the plugins and make your IDE work :-)

I will use NetBeans 7.3 (or dev builds) during the airhacks.com and all other events as well.

WebLogic Logging Configuration by René van Wijk

In general, it is a good idea to use log rotation to prevent having to stop a WebLogic server to remove a large log file that is filling up the file system. It is also a good idea to create a separate partition such that the root file system does not fill up. A partition is a contiguous set of blocks on a drive that are treated as if they were independent disks. The default installation of today’s Enterprise Linux distributions uses flexible partitioning layouts by creating one or more logical volumes. Some of the partitions that we might want to consider separating out from root to provide more flexibility and better performance in the environment

  • /home – A file server environment would benefit from separating out /home to its own partition. This is the home directory for all users on the system, if there are no disk quotas implemented, so separating this directory should isolate a user’s runaway consumption of disk space.
  • /tmp – If we are running a high-performance computing environment, large amounts of temporary space are needed during compute time, then released upon completion.
  • /usr – This is where the kernel source tree and Linux documentation (as well as most executable binaries) are located. The /usr/local directory stores the executables that must be accessed by all users on the system and is a good location to store custom scripts developed for our environment. If it is separated to its own partition, then files will not have to be reinstalled during an upgrade or reinstall by simply choosing not to have the partition reformatted
  • /var – The /var partition is important in mail, Web, and print server environments because it contains the log files for these environments and the overall system log. Chronic messages can flood and fill this partition. If this occurs and the partition is not separate from the /, service interruptions are possible. Depending on the environment, further separation of this partition is possible by separating out /var/spool/mail for a mail server or /var/log for system logs.
  • /opt – The installation of some third-party software products, such as WebLogic Server, default to this partition. If not separate, the installation will continue under / and, if there is not enough space allocated, could fail.

Setting Up, Configuring, and Using an Oracle WebLogic Server Cluster by Yuli Vasiliev

Learn to take advantage of multiple Oracle WebLogic Server instances grouped into a cluster to maximize scalability and availability.

The key characteristics of a successful online system today include high availability, reliability, and scalability. Put simply, your online system must be ready to process a user request quickly and at any time, even when the number of requests grows abruptly. Strictly speaking, a growing number of user requests is a good thing, because that makes it clear that your online business is booming and opening up new opportunities for you. The ability to act on opportunities is a key characteristic of many successful businesses today.

To meet the requirements for greater availability and scalability, more and more companies are moving toward clustered infrastructures for their online solutions. Oracle WebLogic Server supports clustering, allowing an Oracle WebLogic Server cluster to be composed of multiple Oracle WebLogic Server instances running on different servers at the same time, so that application deployed to the cluster can take advantage of the combined processing power of multiple servers, failover, and load balancing.

To end users and applications, multiple Oracle WebLogic Server instances grouped into a cluster appear as a single Oracle WebLogic Server instance. But beneath the surface, the cluster uses an infrastructure that enables interconnecting clustered Oracle WebLogic Server instances to make them work as a single unit. It's important to realize, though, that setting up and using that infrastructure involves some configuration work on the part of a cluster administrator.

Key Benefits of Clustering
The idea behind clustering is pretty simple: Multiple server instances are grouped to work together to achieve increased scalability and reliability. In particular, the benefits of an Oracle WebLogic Server cluster include the following:

  • High availability - You can deploy your applications on multiple server instances within an Oracle WebLogic Server cluster. In this case, if a server instance that is running your application fails, application processing will continue (transparently to the application users) on another instance.
  • Scalability - New server instances can be dynamically added to a cluster to match consumer demand, without interrupting application processing.
  • Improved performance - Another advantage to deploying on multiple server instances in a cluster is that it provides several alternatives for application processing. The load balancing mechanism that clustering enables can significantly improve performance of your clustered application due to the efficient distribution of jobs and communications across the resources within the cluster.

A small and clean WebLogic cold backup by Laurens van der Starre

In one of my projects, we have to be able to set up a (cold) backup Oracle Service Bus domain in a different data center from a domain backup. One of the requirements was that this data center is(for security reasons) completely independent from the “main” data center. In this particular case, just syncing the middleware home and domain directories was not an option.

Fair enough, and not that difficult at all. Setting up this cold backup domain is just using the pack & unpack tools from WebLogic, and “cloning” your domain. Keeping you cold backup domain up to date can be done by just syncing the configuration backups the “main” domain can automatically create for you:

<YOUR DOMAIN> -> Configuration -> General -> Advanced.
