Rules of the Road for Enterprise Data Discovery

The challenge many companies face today is that insights remain elusive, even though data and the tools to handle it have proliferated. In response, as discussed in the Gartner, Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms (Publication: February 2014), data discovery capabilities are dominating new purchasing requirements, even for larger deployments, as alternatives to traditional BI tools. But "governed data discovery" - the ability to meet the dual demands of enterprise IT and business users – “remains a challenge unmet by any one vendor” {as seen at the time of the report}.

Some customers have been tempted to go with more departmental solutions (as opposed to a more “Enterprise-class” product) to meet business demands for greater self-service analytics, but are often still frustrated by continuing needs to get access to the right data sources: ultimately finding they have selected a limited product solution which does not deliver on the promised business value.

However, partners familiar with Endeca Information Discovery, especially with version 3.1+, will appreciate that its integration to OBI Foundation, coupled with ease of use and the ability to mash-up disparate data and text sources, give Oracle a pretty good response to this client need for governed enterprise data discovery.

To help you navigate this discussion with your key clients, can I suggest you use this white paper (@ The 5 Rules of the Road for Enterprise Data Discovery) to help clarify the agenda, and to help you to guide them towards a sound strategy which will deliver to them real value.

We do not see this as diminishing the need for a solid BI foundation: indeed this is the pre-requisite for sound data discovery. Enterprise data discovery is a natural complement to existing business intelligence practices and platforms, offering analytic agility without compromising quality. Our suggested rules are:

Managing Hierarchies in Financial Applications with DRM

Hierarchies and related links are fundamental to using financial, and indeed many other applications, for example:

  • When a new Chart of accounts is designed, linking an account to its parent is key for future aggregation of data.
  • When legal entities have to be sorted, hierarchies can be built according to dimensions such as geography or organizations.
  • In a General Ledger, every accounting flexible field is a potential analytical dimension.
  • Respecting relationships is also very important when reorganizing sales territories taking into account geography dimension, human resources, client or product information.

That’s why partners have a great opportunity to help their clients to better manage these hierarchies and relationships which are often used in EPM (Enterprise performance management) and Business intelligence. Financial Applications share entire or partial hierarchies with different levels of detail, different points of view. So, “Financial MDM” helps companies to be more efficient because hierarchies and their relationships are managed in a single place. Every modification impacts all applications at the same time. This increases consistency and data quality among all hierarchies.

Financial MDM has got the same DNA as other MDM domains and is a key tool to help partners implement new systems, upgrades and migrations for their clients because it accelerates deployment based on these coordinated and validated hierarchies. Financial MDM manages specific types of master data, such as:

  • Charts of accounts: consolidated, corporate or local. They can be different depending on application type. For instance, granularity is not the same for actual accounting or forecasting. They can be designed to meet different regulatory requirements: local, IFRS, GRI sustainability reporting or Solvency II in the insurance industry
  • Legal entities including different dimensions: geography, activities
  • Organizational dimensions : departments, business units, cost and profit centers
  • Analysis dimensions: using general ledger accounting flexible fields such as sales channels or projects
  • Reference data: time, currencies, taxes.

Financial master data needs to be quickly and easily adapted to business changes at the fast pace of business. Financial MDM is essential not only for minor modifications in day to day business, when creating a new cost centre or modifying an existing attribute for a legal entity, but also when making major changes such as mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations or regulatory changes.

Flexibility is the key to allow business users to easily make their own updates, plus these changes have to be part of a data governance process. A workflow is required to define roles and responsibilities.

Five reasons to invest in a Financial MDM

  1. Empower financial business users
  2. Ensure consistency in business hierarchies and related links
  3. Link local needs to corporate standards and consolidate all lines of business
  4. Accelerate Mergers & Acquisitions
  5. Analyze your master data across heterogeneous environments

Endeca Information Discovery 3.1 VM Download

The current version 3.1 of Endeca Information Discovery can now be downloaded from OTN as a self-contained VM appliance providing a VM (virtual machine) image containing a full installation of Oracle Endeca Information Discovery, including:

  • Endeca Server
  • Studio
  • Provisioning Service

The primary objective of this image is to demonstrate the Endeca Information Discovery self-service use case, allowing end users to immediately log in, upload an Excel file, and customize the resulting application within minutes.

While this image can also be used in conjunction with Endeca Information Discovery Integrator, note that Integrator does not come installed by default on the image. Connecting to this image via Integrator from an outside source (host machine or 3rd party machine) also requires some modifications to the image's default network configuration. See the "Loading Data via Integrator" section in this README doc for details.

PLEASE NOTE that this appliance is for testing purposes only. As such, it is unsupported, and should not be used in a production environment.

You can also “Test Drive” Endeca 3.1 on our hosted system @ http://slc02okj.oracle.com:8001/eid/web. Note that this is shared across different public users, and self-provisioning is disabled. Use Logon ID:  prodney@oracle.com / Admin123.

Business Intelligence Master-class for Partners

Wednesday 6th March 2013, Reading, UK

Business Intelligence projects are consistently top priority and are seen by many organisations as the key driver of transformational change.

Who should attend?

This session is aimed at Oracle partners who are IT Architects and BI & Data Warehouse specialists.
Please note: This workshop is highly interactive, and as such does not involve slide presentations or product feature details, it addresses Architectural issues and considerations for the Architect Community. Please come prepared to take your own notes.

Information Management and Big Data Reference Architecture

This is essential reading for all Oracle Analytics partners, and something you can share with your customers. Here is the latest February 2013 version of the “Information Management and Big Data Reference Architecture” Oracle White Paper from our Doug Cackett and Andrew Bond.

“In our original white paper on Information Management Reference Architecture we described how information was at the heart of every successful, profitable and transparent business in the world – something that’s as true today as it was then.

What has changed in the last few years is the emergence of “Big Data”, both as a means of managing the vast volumes of unstructured and semi-structured data stored but not exploited in many organizations, as well as the potential to tap into new sources of insight such as social-media web sites to gain a market edge.

There is a pressing need for organizations to align analytical and execution capabilities with ‘Big Data’ in order to fully benefit from the additional insight that can be gained. Received wisdom suggests that more than 80% of current IT budgets is consumed just keeping the lights on rather than enabling business to innovate or differentiate themselves in the market. Economic realities are squeezing budgets still further. For organizations looking to add some element of Big Data to their IT portfolio, they will need to do so in a way that complements existing solutions and does not add to the cost burden in years to come.”
