Get OPN Specialized in Business Intelligence & Hyperion EPM

Get yourself and your company recognised and branded as an “Oracle BI / EPM Specialized Partner”. This will bring more business to you, because being OPN Specialised means your prospective clients can find you at Oracle.com by searching for a Specialized Partner. You can also enhance your profile here by Managing your Partner profile in the Solutions Catalog.

Consultants from Oracle partners can become Certified Implementation Specialists by passing the proctored (supervised) exams for OBIEE, Essbase, Hyperion and BI-Apps. These exams are offered at Pearson VUE testing centres and some Oracle University training locations, which are located in most EMEA major cities: see the links below for more details.

We also have on-line tests for “Sales” and “Pre-sales” knowledge, which also provide these levels of specialisation certificate.

To get certified as Specialised, check the Business and Competency Criteria linked below for each specialisation area and take the Assessment Tests:

Oracle Again in Gartner Leaders Quadrant for 2014 BI and Analytic Platforms

Gartner issued the 2014 BI Platforms and Analytic Platforms Magic Quadrant placing Oracle in the Leaders quadrant again.

The Good News

The key aspects for Oracle BI partners is that Gartners sees acceleration in the trend “from BI systems used primarily for measurement and reporting to those that also support analysis, prediction, forecasting and optimization”: which is clearly good for us since all these capabilities can be deployed by Oracle partners with OBI Foundation Suite, Oracle Advanced Analytics and Real-Time Decisions.

Also, “the race is on to fill the gap in governed data discovery.” Endeca Information Discovery 3.1, and its’ integration to Oracle BI, addresses this Self-service requirement better than any of the competition – but be aware that Gartner did not consider this at the time of this 2014 report, since version 3.1 was not out in time for inclusion.

Oracle is a Leader for the 8th consecutive year.  Top reasons cited include:

  • Broad product suite that works with many heterogeneous data sources for large-scale, multi-business-unit and multi-geography deployments
  • Integration with Oracle apps and technology, and with Oracle Hyperion EPM
  • Prebuilt analytic applications – horizontal Oracle BI Applications and the many industry analytic applications built on Oracle BI
  • Among the largest deployments in terms of numbers of users and data sizes
  • 69% of Oracle BI customers consider it their enterprise BI standard
  • Large, global network of partners

Oracle has secured distribution rights for this Gartner research.  Get it here.

Endeca Information Discovery 3.1 VM Download

The current version 3.1 of Endeca Information Discovery can now be downloaded from OTN as a self-contained VM appliance providing a VM (virtual machine) image containing a full installation of Oracle Endeca Information Discovery, including:

  • Endeca Server
  • Studio
  • Provisioning Service

The primary objective of this image is to demonstrate the Endeca Information Discovery self-service use case, allowing end users to immediately log in, upload an Excel file, and customize the resulting application within minutes.

While this image can also be used in conjunction with Endeca Information Discovery Integrator, note that Integrator does not come installed by default on the image. Connecting to this image via Integrator from an outside source (host machine or 3rd party machine) also requires some modifications to the image's default network configuration. See the "Loading Data via Integrator" section in this README doc for details.

PLEASE NOTE that this appliance is for testing purposes only. As such, it is unsupported, and should not be used in a production environment.

You can also “Test Drive” Endeca 3.1 on our hosted system @ http://slc02oku.oracle.com:7101/eid/web/home/index. Note that this is shared across different public users, and self-provisioning is disabled. Use Logon ID: publicuser@oracle.com / Admin123.

Big Data Analytics is Big News

From our BI partner Forum last week in London focusing on Big Data Analytics, I think the messages coming through from the discussions with partners and clients can be distilled into a few points:

1. Find Value = Organisations are more successful in finding value from potential Big Data Analytics projects when they combine data from “Hadoopable” sources with their traditional Oracle databases: for example merging social sentiment information with existing customer loyalty and product revenue data. Hadoop projects in isolation are struggling to complete the business case.

2. Oracle+Hadoop = Open source Hadoop and “R”-analytics are very complimentary to the Oracle stack, and indeed are greatly strengthened by Oracle’s software distribution and connectivity options – notably with OBI, Endeca, ODI, SQL, and the Oracle Big-data-Connectors for Hadoop.

3. Interconnect = Any Oracle partner can get going with this by downloading the software onto a relatively modest server, where they can interconnect the complete platform, and quickly get to grips with it: see below.

a. You can directly access data from Hadoop to analyse, visualise, and assess its’ value, and join it to Oracle DB data within OBI and Endeca and R.

b. If and as needed, data in Hadoop can be economically selected, processed, and enriched with familiar tools like ODI, and then moved with the Connectors into an Oracle database at very high speed transfer rates, within your data governance model (e.g. see the Oracle's Information Management Masterclass Tutorials).

4. Start Smaller = Of course, an Oracle Big Data Appliance plus the Exalytics and Exadata engineered systems are the ultimate solution for this, but all of the software platform from Oracle runs very well with Hadoop on smaller commodity servers. The choice of scale depends on your client’s needs – this is not a constraint on getting value from the integrated software stack. Projects can start relatively “small”; with one commentator suggesting the median deployment is around 10 Tb, and only very few are in the Petabyte range).

5. Enterprise-grade = For the successful Enterprise-grade projects, the Oracle tooling that connects with Hadoop and R provide the security, speed and reliability needed to de-risk the project and surface the value. These familiar tools (OBI, ODI, SQL, Big-data-Connectors) also minimise the skills gap and cost otherwise needed for extensive Java and MapReduce programming.

6. Hadoop is not Big Data = The key to value is using the right set of tools for the job: this may or may not include Hadoop.

This is a recent customer story where the full architecture is being put to broad use:

CaixaBank deploys new big data infrastructure on Oracle - Enables the Spanish Bank to Develop Better Customer Services, Integrating Data Created Across All Its Channels.

Interconnect the complete platform

Partners can assemble a complete platform from these VMs. These pull together a large set of tools, and so I recommend you put this on a server with 32Gb RAM.  You can also get some hints @ Oracle BI Partners Get to Grips with Big Data Analytics

With OEID’s long-standing differentiation in correlating unstructured information with structured data, business users can now perform their own text mining to identify hidden concepts, without having to request support from IT. They can augment these insights with best in class keyword search and pattern matching, all in the context of rich, interactive visualizations and analytic summaries.

· Enterprise-Class Self-Service Discovery: OEID 3.1 enables IT to provide a powerful self-service platform to the business as part of a broader Business Analytics strategy, preserving the value of existing investments in data quality, governance, and security. Business users can take advantage of IT-curated information to drive discovery across high volumes and varieties of data, and share insights with colleagues at a moment’s notice.

· Harvest Content from the Web with the Endeca Web Acquisition Toolkit: Oracle now provides best-of-breed data access to website content through the Oracle Endeca Web Acquisition Toolkit. This provides an agile, graphical interface for developers to rapidly access and integrate any information exposed through a web front-end. Organizations can now cost-effectively include content from consumer sites, industry forums, government or supplier portals, cloud applications, and myriad other web sources as part of their overall strategy for data discovery and unstructured analytics.
