Test Drives for BDD and BICS

We have updated the Test Drive kits for partners to run their own marketing events for their clients covering either BI Cloud Service and Visual Analyzer, or Big Data Discovery.

If the “Test Drive” idea is new to you, we have created for our specialised partners, the ability to run Test Drive Workshops for your customers. For example, a challenge you may be facing is how to easily show the business value of analytics to a set of customers.  We find the key to achieve this is to show best in class business analytic examples specific to a business person's role and needs - e.g. "HR analytics" for HR professionals, "Self-service Visual Analysis” for any business person, or “Big Data Discovery” for business analysts and data scientists.

These Test Drive Workshops are carefully scripted to allow a customer business person (usually not IT) to navigate for themselves around a series of dashboards and analysis targeted to show how analytics can help their business and drive ROI.

Oracle hosts the demo system for test drives, except for those that use BICS (where a partner needs to use their own BICS pod subscription). To access these, you need to gain access to the Emea Analytics Partner shared folder. If you do not already have access granted (e.g. the links below do not work), then send to Mike.Hallett@Oracle.com your Oracle.com logon-ID, and I will add you.

Partners can download these kits and guides for test drives such as:

We ourselves at Oracle are running these test drives for our customers, and you may wish to invite your clients to attend these too, for example we have these in the near future in the UK:

Oracle Big Data Discovery Version 1.1

Partners and customers can replay our webcast with Cloudera, Unlock Your Analytic Talent with the Visual Face of Hadoop (originally on August 29).

Oracle Big Data Discovery version 1.1 is now available. This release extends Oracle’s innovation in Big Data Analytics by bringing together the best open-source and Oracle technologies, enabling you to reach more of the market and address more of your clients’ analytics challenges.

  • Big Data Discovery now runs on Hortonworks HDP 2.2.4+, in addition to Cloudera CDH 5.3+.  That makes BDD the first Spark-based big data analytics product to run on the top two Hadoop distributions, significantly expanding your market opportunity.
  • Customers can now access enterprise data sources via JDBC, making it easy to mash up trusted corporate data with big data in Hadoop.  BDD 1.1 elegantly handles changes across all this data, enabling full refreshes, incremental updates, and easy sample expansions.  All data is live, which means changes are reflected automatically in visualizations, transformations, enrichments, and joins.
  • Dynamic visualizations fuel discovery – but no product can include every visualization out-of-the-box.  This release includes a custom visualization framework that allows customers and partners to create and publish any visual and have it behave like it is native to BDD.  Combined with new visualizations and simpler configuration, this streamlines the creation of discovery dashboards and rich, reusable discovery applications.
  • Big Data Discovery is unique in allowing partners and customers to find, explore, transform, and analyze big data all within a single product.  This release significantly extends BDD Transform, making it both easier and more powerful.  New UIs make it easy to derive structure from messy Hadoop sources, guiding users through common functions, like extracting entities and locations, without writing code.  Transformation scripts can be shared and published, driving collaboration, and scripts can be scheduled, automating enrichment.  Transform also includes a redesigned custom transformation experience and the ability to call external functions (such as R scripts), providing increased support for sophisticated users.
  • BDD 1.1 supports Kerberos for authentication (both MIT and Microsoft versions); enabling authorization via Studio (including integration with LDAP) to support Single Sign-on (SSO); and providing security at both project and dataset levels.   These options allow customers to leverage their existing security and extend fine-grained control to big data analytics, ensuring people see exactly what they should.

And if you wish to deep dive into Spark (although to use BDD, this is not needed), I suggest you check out the Cloudera Developer Training for Apache Spark.

Extracting Useful Information From Human Language Text

Digital Reasoning announced that its cognitive computing platform, Synthesys, has achieved Oracle Big Data Appliance Optimized status through the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN). Digital Reasoning was also a sponsor of the Business Analytics Summit in London (11 Feb 2015). Read the Press Release here.

In the field of big data and natural language, extracting useful information from any piece of human language is a challenging problem. Sentences must be parsed, entities identified, and relationships must be modeled. Digital Reasoning Synthesys semantic analysis software on Oracle Big Data Appliance can extract and resolve billions of entities, facts and relationships from millions of pieces of human language text. This enriched semantic analysis can then be visualised and further analysed and combined with enterprise and other data sources with Oracle tools such as Big Data Discovery and Endeca Discovery.

Big Data Discovery News from Oracle OpenWorld 2014

Thomas Kurian, Oracle’s executive vice president of product development, began his keynote speech at Oracle OpenWorld 2014 by discussing three major trends in business and culture—big data, mobility, and the cloud. He then detailed and demoed new products and services from Oracle that enhance customers’ ability to make use of all three.

Kurian introduced a new set of tools called Oracle Big Data Discovery, which allows database managers and engineers to work more effectively with Hadoop, as “the visual face of Hadoop”. Oracle Big Data Discovery lets users profile, explore, and analyze Hadoop data, and do prediction and correlation. “With Oracle Big Data Discovery, you will be able to explore and find patterns and problems with your data,” Kurian said. Find out what Information Week reported about this Hadoop Data Exploration Tool.

Oracle Big Data Discovery combined with Oracle Big Data SQL, a recently introduced toolset for working with data across relational and big data systems using Structured Query Language, represent a powerful combination of technologies for supporting a truly effective big data strategy.

Kurian also referenced several other technology developments by Oracle:

If you did not manage to visit Oracle OpenWorld 2014, then you can still find out about all of this news, in discussion with our Analytics development and strategy team here in Europe at the Oracle Business Analytics EMEA Partner Community Forum on 21st October to 24th October, 2014 in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Rules of the Road for Enterprise Data Discovery

The challenge many companies face today is that insights remain elusive, even though data and the tools to handle it have proliferated. In response, as discussed in the Gartner, Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms (Publication: February 2014), data discovery capabilities are dominating new purchasing requirements, even for larger deployments, as alternatives to traditional BI tools. But "governed data discovery" - the ability to meet the dual demands of enterprise IT and business users – “remains a challenge unmet by any one vendor” {as seen at the time of the report}.

Some customers have been tempted to go with more departmental solutions (as opposed to a more “Enterprise-class” product) to meet business demands for greater self-service analytics, but are often still frustrated by continuing needs to get access to the right data sources: ultimately finding they have selected a limited product solution which does not deliver on the promised business value.

However, partners familiar with Endeca Information Discovery, especially with version 3.1+, will appreciate that its integration to OBI Foundation, coupled with ease of use and the ability to mash-up disparate data and text sources, give Oracle a pretty good response to this client need for governed enterprise data discovery.

To help you navigate this discussion with your key clients, can I suggest you use this white paper (@ The 5 Rules of the Road for Enterprise Data Discovery) to help clarify the agenda, and to help you to guide them towards a sound strategy which will deliver to them real value.

We do not see this as diminishing the need for a solid BI foundation: indeed this is the pre-requisite for sound data discovery. Enterprise data discovery is a natural complement to existing business intelligence practices and platforms, offering analytic agility without compromising quality. Our suggested rules are:
