Install and enable Machine Learning on DVD 4.1 for Mac

DVD 12.2.4.1 is now available for download. It is mostly a stabilization of 4.0 and no new features are listed at this time.

However, if you are using a Mac, you might want to check it out, as it's now possible to install machine learning addons!

You will need a R distribution installed on your system. I'm running open source R 3.3. First thing you need to do is install forecast package, simply run a R session type

> install.packages("forecast")

You also want to check your version so run:

> R.Version()$version.string

[1] "R version 3.3.1 (2016-06-21)"

On my system it's 3.3.1 - bit I only need the 3.3 part.

Next, you need to tell DVD where your R distribution is. To do that, open the file /Applications/dvdesktop.app/Contents/Resources/app.nw/oui/mw/bi/dvdesktopinstallation.json with your favorite text editor.

You'll find reference to "/Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/3.2/Resources/R" in two places - replace version 3.2 with the version you are actually using.

The last thing to do is installing two apps which get installed with DVD:

- Oracle Data Visualization Desktop Configure Python.app
- Oracle Data Visualization Desktop Configure R.app

If all goes well, your DVD should now have support for machine learning!

PS: thanks to Mats Stellwall for the tips
