Cloudera is Hadoop Market Leader

Have you connected with Cloudera ? – are you one of their partners yet, because this is a win-win for us all.

 - REPLAY the Oracle & Cloudera webcast (from Friday, May 29 ) - Rapidly Unlock the Value of Big Data for your Organisation

Oracle has a close partnership with Cloudera in that we resell their Hadoop version on our engineered platform, the Big Data Appliance. Additionally we obviously therefore target our big data software stack (e.g. Big Data Discovery, Big Data SQL, Connectors, ODI, ...) to run on Cloudera, as well as on Apache Hadoop and some of the other vendors.

If you had not noticed yet, Hadoop is growing really fast, and Cloudera has the lion’s share of this market: e.g. read this analyst report, saying:

“According to Cloudera’s CEO, Tom Reilly, Cloudera’s strategic decision to provide proprietary solutions in an open-source market paid off when Cloudera earned more than $100 million in revenues in 2014, which is more than double the revenues of Hortonworks and MapR.”

You may also have noticed that Intel announced a substantial equity investment in Cloudera ($740 million): and Intel works closely with Oracle on our engineered platforms, including the Big Data Appliance.

Training your people in Hadoop is critical to our combined success in this market, and Cloudera leads the market in high quality Hadoop courses, plus see the Cloudera Product Webinars tutorials and Training Webinars. Oracle will of course invest in training our partners on our specific product offerings for Big Data, but for a generic understanding of the base platform, I suggest you plug into Cloudera’s education programmes. They also have a certification programme so you can Become a Cloudera Certified Big Data Professional.

If you need an introduction, please contact me (Mike.Hallett@Oracle.com ) or Cloudera’s EMEA Partner Director, Jonathan Cooper @ jcooper@cloudera.com.

New Oracle Enterprise Performance Reporting Cloud Service (EPRCS)

Introducing the new Oracle Hyperion EPM cloud approach for secure, collaborative, and process driven reporting. On the Oracle public cloud customers can now buy the new Enterprise Performance Reporting Cloud Service (EPRCS).

  • You can listen to an explanation of this new service on our live EPRCS Webcast on Thursday, May 21, 2015 6:00 pm UK / 7:00 pm CET.

Oracle Enterprise Performance Reporting Cloud is a purpose-built solution in the Cloud for management and narrative reporting. It provides a secure, collaborative, process-driven approach for defining, authoring, reviewing, and publishing financial and management report packages for internal and external stakeholders.

Corporate and management reporting is experiencing significant change in today’s digital age. As reported earnings become more volatile, corporate guidance—and the ability of management to clearly explain the quality and sustainability of corporate performance—is more important than ever.

The current integration of narrative into performance-reporting processes is often manual, ad hoc, and highly prone to error. New cloud-based solutions, such as Oracle Enterprise Performance Reporting Cloud, enable organizations to streamline internal and external reporting processes, combining data plus narrative in a single, secure, collaborative environment.

What is New in Oracle BI Cloud Service (BICS)

Anyone who subscribes to Oracle BI Cloud Service receives automatic upgrades as soon as new features become available. You don't need to request an upgrade or take any actions yourself. Go here to keep up to date with an overview of new features and enhancements added recently, for example in April 2015:

Explore data using Visual Analyzer

Visual Analyzer provides self-service analysis, seamlessly transitioning you between all phases of the analysis lifecycle: data staging, analysis, composition, and consumption. See Getting Started with Visual Analyzer, and Oracle Visual Analyzer is now Available with Demonstrations for Partners .

Manage access to Visual Analyzer through a new application role called BIDiscoveryContentAuthor. See Application Roles Predefined in Oracle BI Cloud Service.

Integrate with Oracle Database Cloud Service (Database as a Service)

Connect Oracle BI Cloud Service to any Oracle Database Cloud Service (Database as a Service) instance. See Changing the Database Connection.

Upload data models from a file

If you’ve modelled your data with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, then you don't need to start from scratch in Oracle BI Cloud Service. Simply upload your on-premises data model file (.rpd) to Oracle BI Cloud Service and start exploring your data through visualizations, reports, and dashboards. See Uploading Data Models from a File (.rpd).

Add your own data to analyses

You can add data from an external source to an analysis in Oracle BI Cloud Service. Adding your own data is sometimes referred to as “mash-up.” See Adding Data from External Sources to Analyses.

Oracle BICS Data Sync version 1

Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service Data Sync supports the load of on-premises data residing in one or more relational or comma-separated value file sources into the schema provisioned on Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service:

Oracle Visual Analyzer is now Available with Demonstrations for Partners

For a 3 minute introduction, see Getting Started with Visual Analyzer video.

Visual Analyzer is a web-based tool provided within the Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service (BICS) that enables you to explore data visually:

  • Creating visualizations is easy in Visual Analyzer with analysis becoming an individual experience in exploration and discovery.
  • Visual Analyzer enables you to experiment with a wealth of different options for how to view your data, and in this experimentation process, you find correlations, discover patterns, and see trends in your content.
  • In Oracle BI Cloud Service, you can create detailed analyses and carefully curated dashboards, and now with Visual Analyzer, end-users have faster, simpler assembly of detailed reports.
  • Visual Analyzer goes even further to give you dynamic views for focused, exploratory interaction with your data.
  • In addition, with Visual Analyzer’s capability to load external data sources, you get self-service mash-ups of data blending of governed enterprise data combined with your own files.

Partners who have their own copy of BICS have access to Visual Analyzer now, while others can request access to our demonstration services (see BICS Demonstration Environments).

Additionally, there is a set of you-tube videos of demonstration storyboards, while OPN Specialised partners can download the content, data and scripts for these demonstrations as well as a “Test Drive” script for you to use with your clients from the BI-partner-community shared portal (for access to this portal, email Mike.Hallett@Oracle.com with your company email id and OPN membership status).

Current offerings: HR, Service, Marketing and Sales demos, and Test Drive @ shared portal:

  • Marketing Demo: Identify the best Spring time promotions for an example Internet Service Provider (“Advanced Communications”), and analyse root causes for regional issues: Video with narrative (Tip: select full screen, and HD).
  • Service Demo: Identify service requests from customers that are highly likely to churn: Video with narration (Tip: select full screen, and HD)
  • HR Demo: The HR Director puts together Payroll and Performance data to investigate attrition for work-life balance: Video with narrative (Tip: select full screen, and HD)
  • Sales Demo: Pipeline analysis to identify sales reps at risk of missing forecast, and identify customers and products to focus on what can best improve sales performance: Video with narrative (Tip: select full screen, and HD)

And see the help @ Exploring Data using Oracle BI Cloud Service Visual Analyzer

Updated BI Applications v11 Test Drive Scripts

We have hosted the BI-Apps v11 Test Drive onto an Exalytics box, and have updated the Test Drive workshop manuals for the Finance, HR & Procurement Modules.

If the “Test Drive” idea is new to you, we have created for our specialised partners, the ability to run Test Drive Workshops for your customers. For example, a challenge you may be facing is how to easily show the business value of BI to a set of customers.  We find the key to achieve this is to show best in class business analytic examples specific to a business person's role and needs - e.g. "HR analytics" for HR professionals, "Spend Analytics" for procurement professionals, and so on.

These Test Drive Workshops are carefully scripted to allow a customer business person (usually not IT) to navigate for themselves around a series of dashboards and analysis targeted to show how BI can help their business and drive ROI.

Oracle hosts the demo system for this, and partners can book this facility and download the whole kit. We have different types of Test Drive such as:

For the latest BI-Apps 11g scripts, and the Endeca test drive, you need to gain access to the Emea Analytics Partner shared folder. If you do not already have access granted (e.g. the link above does not work), then send to Mike.Hallett@Oracle.com your Oracle.com logon-ID, and I will add you.

    BICS Demonstration Environments

Partners can now access BICS (OBI Business Intelligence Cloud Service) demo environments on the Oracle hosted “GSE” (Global Sales Engineering) https://demo.oracle.com.

However, prior to making a request, a partner must register with GSE for access to the demo systems as previously explained here at OBI Foundation Demonstration Systems for Partners.

In summary, OPN Member Partners can Learn more and Apply for Access to GSE ( ... and follow the link CLICK HERE for On Premise Demonstration Environments ), and once approved, can access the link to book and run “On Premise” OBI and BICS demos @ https://demo.oracle.com.

As your partner business with BICS grows, I would recommend you will need to rent your own BICS “pod” on the Oracle Cloud, which you can then persist any demonstration, trial and POC materials you need for working with your clients, and to ensure you always have access to the very latest version of OBI on BICS. For OPN Member Partners, we are currently offering an attractive promotional rate for partners to purchase their own BICS pod for Demo purposes: for more information, contact me at Mike.Hallett@Oracle.com.

Data Integration Platforms for Big Data

Download, and share with your clients, this recent 2015 DAO Research Paper: Data Integration Platforms for Big Data and the Enterprise which offers customer perspectives on IBM, Informatica, and Oracle solutions.

As it points out, “As an ODI developer, I am a Big Data developer without having to understand the underpinnings of Big Data. That is a pretty powerful capability.” And “some differences in the offerings of IBM and Informatica as compared to those of Oracle are fundamental.” For example, “Customers cited 30% to 60% greater developer productivity using Oracle versus traditional Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) tools from Informatica and IBM, based on key architectural differences...”

And if you deploy ODI (Oracle Data Integrator) on the Oracle BDA (Big Data Appliance) with the Oracle Big Data Connectors, this is likely to be a far lower cost software plus hardware solution for high volume, high speed ETL as compared to these other solutions.

Also check out this new ability to use Oracle GoldenGate on Hadoop for Big Data for real-time transactional data streaming into big data systems from most common RDBS and other data sources.

Cumulative Feature Tool for Oracle EPM Versions

Please try out this new web-based Cumulative Feature Overview Tool for Oracle EPM products.

This web based Tool provides concise descriptions of new and enhanced features and functionality available between a user-selected starting and target releases.  You can also download the report output to various formats such as PDF and Excel, and it includes links to video feature overviews.  Feel free to pass this on to your customers.
