Turbocharging Your EBS 12.0 Techstack Upgrade

[Oct 4, 2010 Update:  Since this article was published last year, there have been several updates to the patches list for the respective Oracle Homes (10.1.2, 10.1.3 and based on customer issues and internal testing. The Rapid Install content for those Oracle Homes has not been updated with the same updates.  Hence, the patches delivered by the EBS 12.1.1 Rapid Install will not be the latest baselines available for those technology stack components.  If you use this Rapid Install method, you still will need to refer to the respective documents to apply the latest patches added after the EBS 12.1.1 Rapid Install was released.  For pointers to those documents, see the individual listings for the respective techstack components in this certification summary.]

All three of the major new technology stack components included in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 are also certified with Release 12.0.  You could manually upgrade each of these R12.0 techstack components yourself.  But now that Release 12.1.1 is out, why bother with that time-consuming approach when there's an easier and faster way?

You can use the EBS 12.1.1 Rapid Install to upgrade just the application and database tier technology stack components in your existing EBS 12.0 instance. Your technology stack components are upgraded to the same versions delivered with EBS 12.1.1 while leaving your EBS 12.0 product code (e.g. Financials, Supply Chain) untouched.


Running the Rapid Install with the -techstack option

Using the rapidwiz -techstack option with the EBS 12.1.1 Rapid Install provides options to upgrade the applications and database tier components for the following ORACLE_HOMEs:

  1. Application Server 10g OC4J to (Applications tier)
  2. Application Server10g Forms and Reports to (Applications tier)
  3. Database Release 10gR2 to 11gR1 version (software and configuration files only on the DB tier. DB upgrade and post install steps to be performed separately)
From the first screen below, you can select the respective tier and proceed with the upgrade.  


1. Upgrading the Database Technology Stack

Before selecting the database tier technology stack upgrade, make sure that your environment meets the minimum operating system prerequisites for running the 11gR1 Database. If you choose the database tier upgrade, the wizard takes inputs for the Database host, Oracle SID, ORACLE_HOME and OS user related inputs.  



It creates the new ORACLE_HOME with the associated Release 12.1.1 patches for the 11gR1 Database.  The installation then proceeds with installing the 11gR1 database software and the required configuration files for the E-Business Suite.  



After the installation and configuration is complete, you need to complete the remaining DB upgrade steps using Section 1 and Section 2 of Interoperability Notes for 11gR1 with EBS R12.

2. Upgrading the Applications tier Technology Stack

If you choose to upgrade your applications tier, the Rapid Install wizard requires the CONTEXT file for your existing configuration. Point the wizard to the Application tier context file for your applications tier, e.g. $INST_TOP/appl/admin/<context name>.xml.  



The wizard identifies the respective ORACLE_HOMEs from the context file and proceeds to upgrade these components.  



After validating and confirming the information, the installer proceeds to upgrade the components in the two Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.3 and 10.1.2 ORACLE_HOMEs.  



After all of the new Oracle Application Server 10g files are laid down in your filesystem, the Rapid Install wizard validates the installation. A green tick on the Validation window means the installation passed the post-install checks.  





Once you've run this upgrade on all of the Application tier nodes in your EBS instance, you're done!  Automated, validated, and fast. References Related Articles

    Very good article, save lot of time...but i have a problem with this method.

    my system OUL5x64 r12 12.0.6

    want to upgrade techstack from and AS to AS and

    the processes went exactly as the screens on this article and successful finished.

    when checking the AS versions in $ORACLE_HOME/config/ias.propertiers (in 10.1.2 and 10.1.3 HOME) they are still in the old versions.

    tried it again and got the same result.

    Would you please advise.

    Have you pointed to the right context file for picking up the 10.1.3. and 10.1.2 Oracle Homes?. Did you verify the post install logs and also through UI?. If sure about it, please log a bug against 1745 and INSTALL with your exact platform details and we will take it up from there. I tried it several times on Linux before posting this article and it worked fine.

    Hi Prasad,

    i've opened aTAR with oracle about this issue and we did OWC

    the Analyst was doing the upgrade along with me and at the end it did not upgrade any thing. Yes i did point to the correct XML file.

    i am on oul5x64 (oracle VM) ebs R12 12.0.6

    i did this install more than 3 times and every time , i have the same result as your screen shots, but nothing got upgrade. The analyst will check with the backend and will get back to me.

    Would the techstack upgrade allow us to deploy a web service in the e-biz AS rather than using a seperate web services manager?

    We don't need the full SOA integrated gateway as installed in 12.1.1

    Hi, Dominic,

    Our Applications Technology Group tells me that the only web services supported through the Integration Repository will be those generated via our SOA provider and deployed in the EBS OracleAS home. This is being targetted for a future EBS R12 release.

    There are no current plans to support web services that are not generated and deployed by the EBS Integrated SOA Gateway. We do not currently plan to support the deployment of custom web services for a custom PL/SQL API via JDeveloper.

    We are at 12.0.4 (db We are thinking of upgrading to 12.1.1, and are interested in the steps you outlined in your blog post here.

    However, we are concerned about continued support by Oracle. Is such a method supported? Are there more detailed upgrade instructions other than the broad outline in your blog (ie. We are wondering what functional steps are necessary, Pre-steps, post-steps, etc). Is there such a list?

    We have 2 nodes sharing the same application filesystem (shared application filesystem). Following the above method the context file for node1 was updated with the new techstack information.

    How does the context file for node2 get updated? Is there a command we can use to update the context file for node2 with the new techstack paths.

    10.1.2 Forms and Reports Home patches list has become longer over the last one year or so. Hence, Rapid Install based patches list and the actual list in the note 437878.1 for Forms and Reports could be out drastically out of sync. Please keep reviewing 437878.1 regularly for updates to the note for one-offs. When the next Rapid Install happens, we are expecting the one-offs list for RI customers to be closer to zero for the respective Oracle Homes included.

    I did a conventional method of upgrade from 12.0.4 to 12.1.1 and then later to 12.1.2, but the forms is giving error FRM-92101. Can you please put some light on this.

    I have an SR also on this and going on for over a week now.

    I'm sorry to hear that you've encountered an issue with your upgrade.

    We can provide general conceptual guidance here, but I'm afraid that this blog isn't the best place to get technical support for specific issues like the one that you're working through.

    I'd recommend escalating your existing SR to let Oracle Support know that it isn't proceeding to your satisfaction. Please feel free to forward your Service Request number to me if it gets stuck in the support process for some reason.

    Hi Steven,

    My firm is on 12.0.3 and we are thinking of upgrading to 12.1.2. However with 12.1.3 out we would like to consider 12.1.3, can you please confirm for me this question regarding the support policy. Now that 12.1.3 is released, will new patches for bug fixes be released only for 12.1.3 and not both 12.1.2 and 12.1.3 ? I am wondering if that is the case should we implement 12.1.3 since the go live date is in 2011 for us.

    We would provide patches for both 12.1.3 and 12.1.2 alike.

    If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't see any value in going through a major upgrade project to 12.1.2 now, since you would only have to redo that at some point to get to 12.1.3. I would go directly to 12.1.3, saving you time and ensuring that you have the latest improvements in that release.

    You have not commented on my post, I would appreciate your reply.

    I have received also a reply from Oracle support stating your artcile is outdate and the following is the rest of their reply.

    Upgrade the Techstack via Rapidwiz is only of benefit if you're upgrading to that release level only. Rapidwiz -techstack will only install the versions that come with that release of EBS. i.e

    Upgrading from 12.0 to 12.1.1.

    For 12.1.1, it will deliver:

    As RapidWiz is not available for 12.1.2 or 12.1.3, the above 10.1.2.x levels are the latest versions that can be supplied by rapidwiz -techtack (12.1.1). This means the blog article is now out of date. It will not upgrade to the latest versions as the techstack homes are merely extracted/unzipped from the 12.1.1 Rapidwiz stage area onto the file system.

    Due to inventory registration restrictions, it is required that the new Homes are installed a new location. Using an existing location will overwrite the existing files, and inventory registration will fail because the home is already registered. This will cause the OUI to terminate and will not configure those Oracle homes leaving symbolic links and files referencing an Oreacle internal system. If the inventory is not reconfgured, it will either not display any results or the results displayed would be inaccurate and not reflect the actual component versions installed.

    If you need the latest 10.1.x patchset levels, then RapidWiz is not the best option as the homes will still need to be upgraded further.

    To upgrade existing 10.1 homes to the latest patchset levels, the following documents need to be followed:

    I agree, this artcile is out of date because the patches delivered by RI is almost an year and half old (and there have been no updates to RI since then) where as the 10.1.2/10.1.3/ Oracle Homes patch list in the respective notes are updated since then based on the several issues reported by customers and internal testing. I am putting a note at the top of this article for the same.

    This method could save our company a lot of time, but Oracle support is saying it is not supported for R12.0 to R12.1.1. Reference SR 3-4521961671. Can we have these steps documented in an official MOS note for sure, as suggested above?

    If so, can the new MOS note about turbocharging contain the complete list of techstack patches which RI 12.1.1 applies in the background, so that we can determine (without resorting to extensive detective work) which additional patches to apply from #437878.1 once the RI -techstack command is finished and successful?

    While waiting for the above, in the meantime is it possible to edit #752619.1 and add a link to this blog entry (and later the new MOS note) -- at the place/position where RI -techstack would be run? With the lack of official support, we are now following #752619.1 religiously, but this edit could allow us to revisit the issue once again in a future patching run.
