Transportable Tablespaces for On-Premise Database Migrations Now Certified with EBS 12.1.3 and Database 19c

John Abraham

Database migration across platforms of different "endian" (byte ordering) formats using the Transportable Tablespaces (TTS) process is now certified for on-premise Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 with Oracle Database 19c.

To use this certified process the source database must be either Oracle Database 11gR2 (, 12cR1 ( or 19c and the target database is Oracle Database 19c. The target database will consist of a single pluggable database (PDB) in a container database (CDB).

This EBS 12.1 with Database 19c database migration process utilizes the full transportable export/import feature. The full transportable export/import feature significantly speeds up the migration process while also offering the optional use of incremental backup to minimize downtime.

Patch 31405457, delivered by the EBS Platform Engineering team, is required for this migration process. The patch is now generally available on MOS for use by EBS customers. The patch provides various SQL scripts to facilitate the export and import of an EBS database instance using TTS.

The "endian-ness" of platforms can be checked by querying the view V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM using sqlplus (connected as sysdba) with the following statement:

SQL> select platform_name, endian_format from v$transportable_platform;

The following table is a list of relevant platforms certified for the EBS 12.1 with Database 19c on the database tier:

Big Endian Little Endian
Oracle Solaris on SPARC Linux x86-64
HP-UX Itanium Windows x64
IBM AIX on Power Systems
Linux on IBM Z

Guidance for Using Transportable Tablespaces

The use of TTS may greatly speed up the migration of the data portion of the database. It does not however affect the speed of migrating the metadata which is done using export/import. Smaller databases (less than 1TB) may see little gain from the use of TTS and other techniques like export/import are simpler and possibly faster.

We recommend that when considering the use TTS, you first perform a test migration with export/import on your database using the 'metrics=y' parameter. This will provide information regarding the relative size of data vs metadata in your database and thereby give you a basis to compare any gains in timing. Generally speaking, the larger the relative size of data (as compared to metadata), the more likely it would be that TTS is suitable as a migration process to reduce downtime.

This particular certification is specific to on-premise platform migrations. Additional platform migration certifications that are in progress or planned include the following:

  • EBS 12.2 and 12.1.3 DB cross-platform migration to Oracle Cloud using 19c Transportable Tablespaces
