Oracle Business Approvals for Managers Now Available for iPhone

Steven Chan
Senior Director
[January 28, 2009 Update:  Added information on where to download this software]

business approvals for managers iphone-expense-report-screenshot.png

As an enthusiastic Apple iPhone user, I am very pleased to see that our Applications Unlimited team has released their newest iPhone application:  Oracle Business
Approvals for Managers
.  This free (!) iPhone application allows managers to handle pending E-Business Suite actions related to expense reports, purchase order requisitions, human resources vacancies, and HR job offers.  Managers can use this
mobile app to evaluate pending EBS approvals, request more information, and approve or reject pending requests.

This iPhone app builds on the Oracle Business Indicators iPhone application.  Oracle Business Approvals for Managers provides optional access to analytic reports related to the type of approval that users are reviewing.  This configuration
retrieves data from Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus (OBIEE) or Oracle Business Intelligence Applications.  All communications are secured via SSL encryption and may be optionally integrated with Oracle Identity Management components,

iPhone + Apps R12 Integration Architecture

There's a lot of technical wizardry going on under the surface:

As you can see from the architecture diagram, this application requires the following prerequisites:

  • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 version 12.0.4 and higher

  • Oracle SOA Suite and higher

  • Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus (if you wish to use the optional OBIEE reports)

The Oracle SOA Suite, running on the Oracle application server, uses BPEL to handle the main worklist functionality and the subsequent back-end integration with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.  Web Service calls are intercepted and authenticated by
the Oracle Web Service Manager (OWSM).  It uses the Oracle Application Adapter for its integration with the E-Business Suite.   In addition, if access to analytic reports is enabled, Oracle BI EE Plus handles the request for business
intelligence data that supports each worklist item.

For complete details about configuration and features, see:

A Word About Licencing

Although the iPhone app itself is free from the Apple iTunes store, Oracle Business Approvals for Managers requires licensing of a server product called Oracle
Business Approvals Connector for Managers.  This connector provides secure integration with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 using Oracle SOA Suite and the optional OBIEE technologies.  This connector can be licensed directly from Oracle.

Downloading this software

  1. Go to http://edelivery.oracle.com
  2. Click Continue on the welcome screen.
  3. Fill out the form and check the boxes for the export restrictions.
  4. Select Product Pack "E-Business Suite" and either platform of "Linux x86" or "Microsoft Windows (32-bit)". Click Go.
  5. Click on the link towards the bottom of the page for "Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers 1.0 Media Pack for Linux x86" or "Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers 1.0 Media Pack for Microsoft Windows (32-bit)"
  6. There will be downloads for:
  • Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers 1.0
  • Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers 1.0 : Required Oracle EBS 12.0 patch
  • Oracle SOA Suite 10g ( (32-bit) (CD)
  • Oracle Application Server 10g ( Patch set (32-bit) (CD)

Feedback is Welcome

Like the previously-announced Oracle Business Indicators app, this application breaks new ground for mobile support for the E-Business Suite.  I know that our Applications Unlimited development team is eager to hear your feedback about this
product.  If you post any comments or questions here, I'll make sure that they're passed directly to that team.

You've got to be crazy happy over this one. Now, if Floyd and I could just get VMWare to work with Visio and Projects, Apple would be the only way to go...:-)

    Good stuff.

  • Steven Chan Friday, November 14, 2008

    Hi, John,

My private exchanges with Floyd suggest that he's switched back from VMWare Fusion 1.1.3. I'm running that older version, too (2.0 didn't pass muster).

I don't have any trouble with either Visio or Projects under VMWare. Might it be a PEBKAC issue? ;-)

    Steven -

This is very cool stuff! Do you know if there are any plans for a Blackberry flavor of Oracle Business Indicators and Business Approvals?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Steven Chan Monday, November 17, 2008

    Hi, Robin,

Yes, this is very cool -- the static descriptions don't do justice to the real experience of using this firsthand.

I don't think that the team that owns this product has any immediate plans to port this to the Blackberry platform. This product has been expressly developed to take advantage of the iPhone's built-in features such as pinch-zooming, tap-zoom, graphics rendering, and so on. I suspect that it would be a real challenge to duplicate that user experience on the Blackberry.

  • Bob Jones Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Business Approvals for Managers is not quite free, the BPEL Connector is a licensed component.

  • sangi Tuesday, November 18, 2008

hi i am using i-Mate windows mobile. shall i use E Business Approval for Manager. Please let me know.

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Yes, I've noted that in the "A Word About Licencing" section already. The client is free; the back-end connector requires a licence.

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, November 19, 2008

    Hi, Sangi,

This product isn't available for Windows Mobile-based devices. This application runs only on the Apple iPhone.

can somebody bail me out on PO/requisition approval on blackberry. My management has given me the project and I am at cross road. We have done all the patching on EBS but the approval is not yet working on blackbbery, what can I d?.

  • Steven Chan Monday, December 1, 2008

    Hi, Oseni,

I don't have any ideas as to why this isn't working. I'd recommend logging a formal Service Request via Oracle Metalink to get one of our Support engineers engaged.

  • Ravi Thota Sunday, March 22, 2009

    Hi, Oseni..

I am also working on the same task...

can you please help me if u have solution...

  • Steven Chan Tuesday, March 24, 2009

    H, Ravi,

If you're having trouble approving Workflow Notifications on Blackberry devices, I'd recommend logging a formal Service Request via Metalink to get one of our Procurement specialists engaged.

  • Oseni Yaya Ayokanmi Thursday, March 26, 2009

It is working now. We used blackberry BES and BIS.

  • Senapathy Thursday, June 18, 2009

Can someone give me some details on approvals using blackberry approvals for purchase orders and requistion approvals

  • Steven Chan Tuesday, June 23, 2009

    Hello, Senapathy,

I'm not a Purchasing or or Requisitions specialist, so I'm forced to theorize on first principles here. If either of those two products can generate emails via Workflow for requesting approvals from end-users, then those emails can be approved or rejected using any standard HTML-compliant mail application. This should include Blackberry devices and other mobile mail clients.

If you want a definitive reply for those products specifically, your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.

  • Murilo Guimaraes Wednesday, December 9, 2009

    Hey guys,

I stumbled upon this, and realize that some posts are relatively old, but those of you who may be interested in completing and approving Oracle E-business Suite tasks on your BlackBerry should take a look at Groveware's Mobile Task Manager application.

This application connects to E-business Suite in a very similar fashion to how the iPhone does it. Take a look and hopefully it's what you guys are looking for.

  • Ian Howard Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Hi Steven, I have a customer in the UK that is interested iPhone applications for the ebusiness Suite but would like to know what is included with each of the applications. Do you know if there are any user guides showing the available functionality

    Thanks very much

  • Steven Chan Monday, December 28, 2009

    Hi, Ian,

The User Guide and Configuration Guide (links above) are the only detailed documentation I'm aware of for this product. You can find the Datasheet and FAQ on the "Business Approvals for Managers" website, too.

  • Jean Jerzak Wednesday, January 20, 2010

    Hi Steven,

Is The Business approval for managers applications also valid for 12.1.1 Oracle Applications - I know when it came out 12.1.1 and above was not out only the 12.0.3

  • Steven Chan Thursday, January 21, 2010

    Hi, Jean,

The prerequisites state, "12.0.4 and higher." I do not know whether the Business Approvals for Managers team has explicitly tested their app with 12.1.1, but the latter should be supported.

I don't have a lot of visibility into that team's certification activities, so if you wish a definitive answer, your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of those specialists engaged.

  • Sumir Wednesday, January 27, 2010

We are installing Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Manager on R12.1.1

For that I have to install Oracle Application Server Adapter as perquisite.

I need your help to get the software of Oracle Application Server Adapter .Where i can find that

  • Steven Chan Friday, February 5, 2010

    Hi, Sumir,

You can find Fusion Middleware downloads here:

If you have trouble with installing Fusion Middleware, your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.

  • Kishore Yalamarty Tuesday, September 7, 2010

    Hi Steven,

I gather from the blog that the pre-req for Oracle business approvals for Managers is version 12.

We are on 11.5.10 and am currently exploring the Business Approval for Mgrs. Is there any other alternative for 11.5.10 customers to use this apps.

  • Steven Chan Tuesday, September 7, 2010

    Hi, Kishore,

Yes, that's right. I don't know of any Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i-equivalent for this functionality.

  • Pooja Monday, September 13, 2010

    Dear Steven,

My company would like to do the iPhone - Oracle Apps Intergration. I've been doing some reading on this. Could you please let me know if there is any setup required from the Oracle Applications perspective ( like some server setup or something that needs to be done by logging into the application and then setting it up.)

I'm aware that some setup needs to be done from Oracle SOA suite. (BPEL).

    Thanks in advance,

  • Steven Chan Monday, September 13, 2010

    Dear Pooja,

I'm afraid that I don't have any hands-on experience with the setup for this particular product. I'd recommend reviewing the Configuration Guide linked above for details about the setup process. If you have any questions after going through that guide, Your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get of our specialists engaged.

  • Natalia Thursday, December 2, 2010

    Dear Steven,

I have a question from a client. They would like to know benefits from using Business Approval Connector for Managers.

Is there sense to use it without Business Approvals for Managers?

I wonder if Business Approval Connector for Managers is a server part of a solution why it's metric in E-Business Suite price list is "Application User".

Can a client use this application as an alternative to approval functionality in core applications (Financials, Purchasing)?

Could you, please, check links to Guides you put above. I failed to get them.

    Best regards, Natalia

  • Steven Chan Thursday, December 2, 2010

    Dear Natalia,

Thanks for letting me know about the links. OTN changed their back-end solution and broke them. I've updated the links to the latest locations.

I'm afraid that I don't have sufficient background with the Business Approvals for Managers product to discuss its capabilities to the extent you need. I'll send you an email to help you get connected to that product team directly.

  • Mohamed Sayed Saturday, January 8, 2011

    Hi Natalia,

The connector is a group of BPEL processes that are deployed on the soa suite as web services.

the Business Approvals for Managers client s.w is designed to communicate with the connector to read and respond to notifications.

  • Steven Chan Monday, June 13, 2011

    Hello, Guest,

I'm sorry to hear that you've encountered an issue with this setup step.

We can provide general conceptual guidance here, but I'm afraid that this blog isn't the best place to get technical support for specific issues like the one that you're working through.

Your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.

Please feel free to forward your Service Request number to me if it gets stuck in the support process for some reason.

  • Zaki Tuesday, June 14, 2011

    Dear Steven,

Thanks for your care to reply , and I will submit my issue to Oracle support , and I will provide you the SR number .

    Dear Steven

We are using Oracle APPS R12.1.1 on Oracle Solaris Sparc 64bit, but you mentioned the download link for "Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers" for Linux and Windows

is there any download link for Oracle Solaris Sparc 64bit?

  • Steven Chan Tuesday, February 21, 2012

    Dear Guest,

We're channelling all porting-related requirements through our sales teams. Can you you follow up with your Oracle account manager with this porting request?

  • guest Wednesday, February 22, 2012

    Dear Steven Chan

our organization is using EBS12.1.3(64-bit) on RedHat Linux 5.6(64-bit), we want to know that if this Iphone app supports 64-bit system or when it will be available/applicable for 64-bit systems.

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, February 22, 2012

    Hi, Khalid,

I'll need to check our certification for that platform. We're channelling all porting-related requirements through our sales teams. Can you you follow up with your Oracle account manager with this question?

  • Divya Tuesday, August 7, 2012

We're trying to install "Oracle Business Approvals for Managers". I could see all configuration steps related to SOA suite, Connectors and Adapters in the links mentioned in this blog. But my question is, are there any configuration steps on the EBS application side to enable the "worklist" of this mobile app for the user logging in through mobile? If so, how to enable the worklist from EBS application side?

    We're using EBS R12.1.3

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, August 22, 2012

    Hello, Divya,

Sorry for the delay in responding to this.

The Business Approvals for Managers app requires additional licencing for the E-Business Suite-side components, as well as for the required Fusion Middleware components. You can follow up with your Oracle account manager to discuss licencing terms for those components.

  • Nishen Wednesday, March 13, 2013

    Hi Steven,

We have a few customers that are very interested in this type of functionality. They would love this app.

Do you know if there are any references customers using this app?

Do you have a possible roadmap for this app.

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, March 13, 2013

    Hi, Nishen,

I'm afraid that I don't have visibility into customer references.

We're working on the next generation of this app right now; stay tuned.

We have EBS 12.1.3 version on Linux x86-64 and we're going to install "Oracle Business Approvals for Managers", but it´s for linux 32bits, can be installed with out problems?

  • guest Friday, May 17, 2013

    Hi Steve,

Can be install the "Oracle Business Approvals for Managers" in a different physical server from EBS server?

  • Max Arderius Monday, May 20, 2013

I believe there may be some restrictions to install Business Approval Connectors on Linux64 since it requires SOA Suite which may in turn be platform dependent. For the server side, these components don't have to be installed on the same machine than E-Business Suite. For more details, check Note 1476753.1.

You may want to follow up with Oracle support to validate the Linux64 vs Linux32 requirements.

  • guest Thursday, January 9, 2014

If we have this App on iPhone do we have to connect to VPN for getting notifications on the device??

  • Max Arderius Monday, January 13, 2014

Guest, It depends. Before you can use the App, your administrator must configure Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers and provide you the endpoint URL used to connect to the Oracle Business Approvals Connector for Managers Web services on the Oracle SOA Suite server.

If this URL is internal, you most likely will need a VPN connection. If the URL is available externally then you won't need VPN.

  • Manny Monday, February 17, 2014

    Hello Steve,

My management is expecting this kind of tool for the EBS R12 approval notifications. I have gone thru' applicable documents and understood that it runs op top of SOA Suite 10g.

    Our env. details are:

    Oracle DB 11g, Oracle SOA/Middleware 11g, Oracle R12 12.1.x series.

    Below are my concerns:

    1) Is these approval notifications comes along with the attachments (for Ex. if I have leave application with medical leave certificate attachment or Expense report with bill attachment). Can the managers review the attachments and approve upon?

    2) Since the above documents speaks about SOA Suite 10g, could you please help me to understand feasibility to use 11g SOA/Middleware for the same.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Steven Chan Wednesday, March 12, 2014

    Hello, Manny,

We're working on a next-generation version of our Approvals app. I'll post details in a blog article as soon as possible. Stay tuned.

We plan to certify Android (as well as iOS) with our upcoming mobile apps.

What Android versions and devices are you deploying in your organisation?

  • Steven Chan Friday, August 22, 2014

    Hi, Yousuf,

    See this latest article:

Mobile Apps for Oracle E-Business Suite

  • Sankar Karuppasamy Tuesday, November 25, 2014

    Hi Stephen,

Does this application support electronic signatures?. ESignature in EBS as you maybe aware requires an approval and then a signature using user id/password

  • Max Arderius Monday, December 1, 2014

Sankar, Business Approvals for Managers does not support eSignatures. Note that this app has been replaced by the new Mobile Approvals available in the App Store:

Our development team is analyzing the feasibility of implementing this feature in Mobile Approvals, however due to Oracle's revenue recognition guidelines, we can not specify any release dates at this time.

Will the blackberry Priv be certified to run the Oracle apps such as Fusion iExpense and Approvals for managers?

  • Steven Chan Tuesday, December 22, 2015

    Hello, Guest,

We currently have no plans to offer a Blackberry port for these mobile apps.

Unfortunately, demand for this platform seems to be dwindling rapidly. Industry reports suggest that market share for Blackberry is below 1% of mobile users and is continuing to fall. For example, Gartner’s report earlier this year indicated that Blackberry now commands 0.04% of device shipments, down from 0.06% in 2014. Our assessment, based upon anecdotal information, is that Blackberry’s market share is even less for EBS users.

We will continue to monitor this. We will revisit our certification stance if the situation changes.
