JRE 1.8.0_291 Certified with EBS Releases 12.2 and 12.1

Tahir Ahmad, and contributing author: Elke Phelps
Update, 2021-06-16: We have now made available important patches to fix an issue where attempting to open a URL from Oracle Forms or any Java applet in Oracle E-Business Suite may appear to do nothing, but no errors are seen. For more information, please refer to this new article: New Patches to Resolve Issue With EBS Desktop Clients Using JRE 8u291 or Later.

We are pleased to announce that the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.8.0_291 (8u291) on the JRE 8 codeline is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 12.1 and 12.2.  This update is available with Patch 32464049

This article answers some questions you may have on the subject.

Is it a requirement to use Java Web Start with this JRE update?

While it is not a prerequisite to use Java Web Start for this latest Java CPU, please take another note of our previous guidance about moving to Java Web Start right away, and particularly ahead of September 2020.
You should uptake this latest Java CPU regardless of whether you are currently using Java Web Start or Java Plug-in on your client tier.

Note:  September 2020 was an important deadline for you if you are still using the Java Plug-in. Oracle Java team's plans to continue shipping the components required to launch Java applets on Internet Explorer 11 using Java Plug-in, and Oracle E-Business Suite Support team's ability to help customers still using Java Plugin are confirmed only through September 2020. Beyond this date, it will be increasingly complicated to receive any new fixes for Oracle E-Business Suite issues specific to Java Plug-in.

How do I get support adopting this latest Java CPU?

If you are using Java Web Start and require assistance with applying this CPU, you can log a service request for assistance from the Java Support organization.

For those of you still in transition to Java Web Start, refer to the following in our recently published My Oracle Support note, FAQ: Essentials of Java Usage in Oracle E-Business Suite (MOS Note 2510500.1):

Where are the JRE 8 requirements for EBS documented?

Full requirements for using Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 12.2 and 12.1 with JRE 8 are listed in the following documents:

Are there special considerations for running JRE 8 on Mac?

JRE 8 can be used with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 and 12.1 on Mac. To see a list of browsers and JRE versions certified on different macOS versions, refer to:

We are running EBS version 12.2.9 and have opened SR 3-25739669221 due to problems with the JRE1.8.0_291 update and the Edge browser:

Cannot launch webpages from a Forms screen
Cannot view concurrent program output in a browser
Cannot export from Forms to Excel
Cannot download concurrent program output to Excel or PDF output to Adobe

These issues do not occur with the January 2021 JRE1.8.0_281.

Can you give guidance of how to configure Microsoft Edge so the newest version of Edge can open Frmservlet.jnlp as smoothly as possible
And allso that Http pages open from Forms started from Edge.

    Hello Dawna,
Thank you for your comment, and also thank you for posting the SR number here. I am sorry you are having trouble with this.

I have asked an expert to look into this issue. As it currently stands, we are not able to reproduce this at Oracle yet (i.e. Edge is working fine, including the use cases you mention).

We will keep working with you until this issue is better understood and resolved. For now, it will be best to keep working with you using the SR above, and I will have our experts monitor it closely.

    Hello Gunnar,

Thank you for your question. Please review the details provided in My Oracle Support Knowledge Document 2188898.1 titled "Using Java Web Start with Oracle E-Business Suite":

Section 6.6 contains information about a couple of properties that can be set in Microsoft Edge (Chromium) which help with the user experience when launching jnlp files.

Following the steps in this document should also automatically take care of web pages launched by Forms started from Edge. I couldn't tell from the last part of your comment whether you are having a technical issue in this area, or if that was a general question. If you are having any technical problem, please do file an SR with Oracle Support and please feel free to let me know the SR number.

    Hope this helps.

We are hearing that this update stops forms from working and other issues in ebs when used with the Edge browser?
  • Tahir Ahmad [Oracle Development] Thursday, May 6, 2021
    Hello jb,

Thank you for your comment. We now have a better understanding of an issue that affects only Microsoft Edge with this Java update 1.8.0_291. Specifically, this Java update affects navigation from Forms (and some additional client side Java code in E-Business Suite), back to a browser window in Microsoft Edge.

All other certified browsers with Oracle E-Business Suite work fine.

This is the same issue that Dawna Roberts reported in a previous comment. We are working very closely with Java, Forms and E-Business Suite development teams to resolve this.

If you have any other issues, I would request you to please file a new SR with Oracle Support with the specifics of that issue. You are welcome to reach out to me directly or post here, if you think any additional specific issue is related to this Java update, or if I can be of any further assistance in general.

We deployed this and ran into same issue as mentioned above.

Do we have any update on this?

I have opened SR as well for the same though.

SR 3-25945172471 : JRE Update 291 Breaks EBS in Edge
  • Bharat Tuesday, May 18, 2021
    Hi Tahir,
We are seeing the same issues with Edge and JRE 291. We are using JWS.
Do you have any latest updates from development on the fix ?
  • Tahir Ahmad [Oracle Development] Wednesday, May 19, 2021
    Mohammed Irfan Khan, Bharat,

Thank you for your comments, and particularly for filing SRs and following the correct process for technical issues. While normally this blog is not the right place to discuss technical issues, I am very happy to provide periodic updates on this issue here, due to the potential impact to affected users. Here is the latest:

We have been reviewing this issue with Java, Forms and EBS teams in depth with a very high priority since it was first reported. At this point a solution approach is fully decided upon, and preliminarily validated. The fix should come in the form of a Forms patch and an EBS patch, both of which would have relatively narrow testing ramifications. Both Forms and EBS are currently implementing the technical changes, and once the patches are ready we will immediately QA these, update the affected documentation and release the fixes. While I cannot provide an exact ETA for usual reasons, I will definitely provide more information as soon as this is fully resolved. The best way to keep abreast in the meantime, is via SRs you have filed. EBS Support team is also fully in the loop, and I am also happy to answer any additional questions in the meantime.

Hope this helps you understand where we are at the moment, and answers your questions above.

Tahir, when the patches are available could a new post be made to the blog highlighting them? We too are running into this bug after we started updating clients to 8u291.
  • Tahir Ahmad [Oracle Development] Friday, May 21, 2021
Thank you for your request. We will most certainly update our documentation and cross reference the necessary information on this blog.
  • Robert Bunting Wednesday, June 2, 2021
Tamir, any update? It has been almost 2 weeks since your last.
  • Tahir Ahmad [Oracle Development] Tuesday, June 8, 2021
    Hi Robert,

Thank you for your inquiry. We have been making good progress on this internally. Both Oracle Forms team, and EBS team have provided the necessary changes internally which have gone through initial, developer level testing successfully.

We are now in the process of formal QA with several relevant combinations of browsers, Java CPU levels, EBS releases and platforms.

As soon as this testing activity is finished successfully, we will release the patches, update the documentation and I will also provide an update on this blog.

I am working with our QA teams with the highest priority in this area, and am optimistic that we won't run into any additional issues during the remaining testing.

Hope this helps you understand where we are at the moment.
