I returned from OAUG/Collaborate with a cold and multiple overlapping development crises. Fun. Now that those are (mostly) out of the way, it's time to get back to clearing out my article backlog.
Premier Support for the 10gR2 database
ends in July 2010. If you haven't already started planning your 11g database upgrade, we recommend that you start soon. We have certified both the 11gR1 (11.1.0.7) and 11gR2 (11.2.0.1) databases with Oracle E-Business Suite; see this blog's
Certification summary to links to articles with the details.
Our Applications Performance Group has reminded me that they have a whitepaper loaded with practical tips intended to make your 11g database upgrade easier. No vacuous marketing rhetoric here -- this is strictly written for DBAs. A must-read if you haven't already upgraded to either 11gR1 or 11gR2, and highly recommended even if you have.
You can download this whitepaper here:
This whitepaper covers:
- Pre-upgrade tips
- Gather
dictionary statistics
- Manage CBO statistics
- Gather
performance metrics
- Save execution plans
- Test (including
capturing and replaying workloads)

scalability of Oracle Applications and provides metrics for the
comparison of Oracle Applications performance on different system

Hi Steven,
With 10gR2 premier support *currently* scheduled to end in July 2010, it seems an odd situation given that the 10gR2 terminal patch set, 10.2.0.5, won't be out, or only just out by them.
Can we expect to see an amendment to the 10gR2 premier support dates, similar to the 10gAS R2 changes last month?
I appreciate you may not be in a position to fully answer this query.
Thanks
Des
Steve,
We have been advised by Oracle support as a large customer, not to upgrade to 11gR2 yet but to go to R1 until R2 becomes more established. This is a little surprising, but if it is the current policy can it be made a bit more visible. If we had known this we could have saved a lot of time and effort.
Hi, Pete,
I think that Support may have expressed their recommendation a bit inelegantly. That's not our "policy" or standing recommendation. You're welcome to forward your SR to me, if you'd like me to ensure that Support gets some coaching on providing this kind of guidance.
The decision to upgrade or not depends upon your organization's desire to take advantage of the latest 11g database features, your risk tolerance, your DBA team's skill levels, and many other factors that will be specific to your organization. We cannot -- and should not -- make any "standard" recommendations, since every customer's requirements are different.
The majority of both Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12 customers are still running the 10gR2 database today. There are fewer customers running 11gR1, and even fewer running 11gR2. This is to be expected; database upgrade cycles are long, and we only recently certified 11gR2.
My impression is that large, risk-averse customers prefer to be on the trailing edge for database upgrades.
Other organizations like being in the forefront of a database upgrade cycle, since they can achieve the benefits of things like Advanced Compression 11g or Transparent Data Encryption 11g sooner, thus reducing TCO and other overhead. For example, we upgraded Oracle's own EBS 12 instance to 11gR1 and turned on Advanced Compression, thus saving over 7 TB in our production environment and over 40 TB across all of the development and preproduction environments.
It might be worth your contacting your Oracle account manager, who can bring in specialists who can assist with a more detailed evaluations of your specific requirements and circumstances.
Regards,
Steven
Hi, Des,
I'm afraid that you'll have to contact the Server Technologies with any questions about their plans for updating their Premier Support dates. As a member of EBS Development, I can't speculate about another Oracle division's plans.
Regards,
Steven
Whitepaper is dated as last updated at 10/9/2009 and still under review? How long is your standard review process before we can implement the finidings in the whitepaper with a degree of confidence matching the size of our license bill?
Hi, Ben,
Thanks for letting me know about that.
It appears that the team that owns that paper has forgotten about removing that "Review" stamp. I'd actually mentioned it to them quite some time ago, and they'd confirmed that this paper has passed all reviews and is production-ready -- i.e. supported for use with production E-Business Suite environments.
I'll ask them to remove that stamp.
Regards,
Steven
we are perform EBS 12.1 database upgrade testing from 11.1.0.7 to 11.2.0.1. O.S. is Redhat 5.5
We follow DOC. ID 1058763.1 and ORACLE 11.2 upgrade guide to perform upgrade. ORACLE software and EBS Database requirement patches are installed smoothly.
While we are perform database upgrade using "dbua" we have error happen (pop up window):
database valut options enable in ORACLE_ HOME /u1/oracle/EBS1/db/tech_st/11.2.0.
This option need to be disable prior to upgrade.
I don't use "database valut". How come this message come out and how to fix it on upgrade?
select * from v$option;
Oracle Database Vault FALSE
Oracle Label Security FALSE
Thanks.
Duffy,
I'm afraid that I don't have any insight into what might be going on here. Your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.
Please feel free to forward your Service Request number to me if it gets stuck in the support process for some reason.

Steven
