Are We Replacing Workflow in EBS with BPEL Process Manager?

Steven Chan
Senior Director

A customer asked, "When are you going to replace Oracle Workflow in the E-Business Suite with Oracle BPEL Process Manager?"

I thought that I'd covered this long ago, but it turns out that that's because I've answered it so often via email.  Here's our standard answer to that question.

Workflow is an essential and tightly-integrated part of the E-Business Suite.  It continues to grow in power and flexibility and is the foundation for our latest Mobile Approvals app. We have no plans to remove it or replace it with Oracle BPEL Process Manager (BPM).

If you'd like more background on the relationship between the version of Oracle Workflow that's embedded in the E-Business Suite and the standalone version, see this article:

How does Workflow compare to BPEL Process Manager?

Workflow and BPM complement each other in environments that include EBS and other systems.  We position Workflow vs. BPM as follows:

  • Workflow is used within EBS for process orchestration between EBS products (e.g. between EBS Financials and EBS Procurement)
  • BPM is used for process orchestration between EBS and other systems (e.g. between EBS Financials and PeopleSoft)

    Hello Steven,

BPM in general and workflows in particular are becoming increasingly critical to modern business automations across all industry sectors. With that in mind I am not sure or convinced that the embedded Oracle Workflow in EBS with its 10+ years old technology is sustainable. For example, the lack of a suitable Business Rules Engine in EBS W/F is causing us so much grief as we cannot apply granular decision logic to our workflows and end up with very complex and high maintenance W/F code.

Oracle BPM is already supporting EBS natively and it should also be the other way round, ie- embedded BPM with EBS, albeit a lighter version.

    Hello, Salam,

I saw your comment posted to the Workflow blog, too. I appreciate your thoughts about the relative merits of these two products.

I'd be interested in hearing more about the "granular decision logic" that isn't currently supported in Workflow. Can you drop me an email with the details?
