Using WebLogic Suite UCM Image for EBS Application Tier

Santiago Bastidas, and Terri Noyes

We've been asked a lot recently if it's possible to use the Oracle WebLogic Suite for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service and associated WebLogic Suite (WLS) UCM Image for the Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) application tier.

By using the UCM (Universal Credits Model) image to create new instances, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) customers can pay as they go for any needed WLS infrastructure. Furthermore, EBS on OCI customers who need to create VMs to host EBS application tiers can now use the WLS UCM Image and take advantage of the UCM billing model.

For detailed instructions, follow the guidance in a new white paper, Using the Oracle WebLogic Suite UCM Image for the Oracle E-Business Suite Application Tier (MOS Note 2766854.1).

Billing Flexibility

WebLogic Server runtime licenses are included with EBS. However, most Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) customers choose to customize the applications to adapt them to their specific business needs, and when doing so must purchase full use licenses of either Internet Application Server Enterprise Edition (iAS EE) -- which comes with WebLogic Server Basic -- or of WebLogic Suite.

As an EBS customer moving to OCI, you can transfer your on-premises licenses by leveraging a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. However, this model does not enable you to leverage the elasticity and flexibility of cloud computing.

On the other hand, the WebLogic Suite Universal Credits Model allows you to realize these benefits by enabling you to pay for usage as needed.

Usage Scenarios

Here are some situations where you might choose to use the WLS UCM Image for your EBS application tiers:

  • When Migrating Your On-Premises Environments to OCI - On first moving to OCI, you can replace your iAS EE or WebLogic Suite perpetual licenses entirely by moving to a subscription-based model.
  • For New Implementations - Similarly, a new implementation is an opportunity to adopt a subscription-based model along the same lines.
  • For Development, Testing or Training - Even if your production OCI instances use the perpetual (BYOL) model, you can still take advantage of UCM for development, test, or training environments. Using UCM for such temporary, often short-term infrastructure, can achieve significant cost savings.
  • When Upgrading EBS - The upgrade procedure to move from EBS Release 12.1 to 12.2 involves laying down a new application tier, and therefore provides a good opportunity for you to switch to UCM-based billing.

Important Additional Information

The Oracle WebLogic Suite for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure service and associated UCM image satisfies Oracle Internet Application Server Enterprise Edition licensing requirements for EBS applications -- namely EBS HR, EBS SCM /ERP, EBS CRM -- in all scenarios where such requirements exist, for all processors provisioned inside OCI Compute instances with that service.

If you choose to deploy the Oracle WebLogic Suite UCM image for your EBS application tier, you must use the Universal Credits model (UCM) for all application tier nodes in that same environment. If you are using the BYOL model, you will use the regular OCI Linux image that is supported for EBS deployment. Be aware, though, that you cannot use UCM for some application tier nodes and the BYOL model for other such nodes in the same EBS environment.
