Searching Collections on docs.sun.com

With the recent updates to, and improved performance of, docs.sun.com, the following was brought to my attention. Here is a scenario:

I am on the page for the Access Manager 7.1 documentation set. In the search box, I type load balancer and hit Enter. Previously, I would receive results specific to the Access Manager 7.1 documentation set. Now, my results include books from all over the docs.sun.com site and not just the Access Manager 7.1 documentation set on which page I searched. According to the docs.sun.com engineers, collection search is no longer supported due to the OneSearch integration.

Don't click away yet!

First take a deep breath and watch this calming video of the May 7, 2007 sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Now continue reading.

There is a workaround not alluded to in Search Tips!

Add the product name to your search. In the example scenario, you would type "Access Manager" load balancer and hit Enter. The primary results will be specific to the product you desire.

NOTE: As we all know, the double quotes around the product name forces the search engine to group the product string. You can also add the version number within the double quotes to narrow the search even further, as in "Access Manager 7.1" load balancer.

It's not the prettiest but that's why they call them workarounds.

UPDATE: The big guy of Sun blogging, JohnD, has added more search tricks for the new docs.sun search engine in this blog entry.
Comments:

[Trackback] Fellow Sun identity writer Michael Teger , has just added a nice blog entry, Searching Collections on docs.sun.com. This seems like a good time to point out some other search tricks. Hopefully, I can learn some, too, cuz I can just sense it: ...

3 cheers for "progress"...
Or would it be more appropriate to call it "one step forward, 5 steps back"? Yes, the speed of docs.s.c has increased a bit and the site hasn't been down during any of my visits the last couple of weeks, but the missing "search within this collection" checkbox is going to be a big pain in the a.. In fact it wasted me a lot of time today while hunting information on multicast in the sol9 admin collection - your trick wouldn't have helped one bit.
So, perhaps it is nice that when you search on www.s.c, you get to search docs. as well, but why does that imply that docs. has to have the same crappy search engine?
SOrry for being so grumpy, but stunts like this is wasting precious time.
