Valid or In-Valid Email Address
By dlacher on Aug 29, 2006
I was just caught by using a plus (+) symbol in my GMail address. I registered with Buick for a contest to win a free car... like I had any chance of winning but what the heck. So I entered as my email address firstname.lastname@example.org . The contest entry page accepted that as a valid email address and I recieved confirmation that it was submitted. While after the contest ended they sent along a follow up email that basically said you did not win but if you want to come in for a test drive we will give you this fancy hat. So I thought what the heck, why not. So going to enter for this hat I entered the same email address (email@example.com) and the Buick site informs me that is an invalid email address. Really, then how did you send me the first email. So I tried firstname.lastname@example.org and was informed that this promotion was for only the original recipient of the email... ah! Just goes to show that sometimes the right hand does not know what the left hands is doing and that erronius error checking can cause a bad customer experience.
For what it's worth.
