Gobi7: End of the trail

Today I ship the Gobi7 back. I has been a great trial run but I don't think in it's current state it would be a long term option for me. Here is a link to my trial posts. Some bullet points I shared with the team that let me demo the unit:

  • the slow booting did not bother me like I had heard other complain about
  • the lack of the ability to change resolution settings locally or on an external monitor was a big one for me
  • the form factor is great, it could even go up to 15" and it would be better
  • next rev for the hardware/firmware needs to be able to present to the user the battery status, something like percent or estimated time remaining
  • external keyboard and mouse work great for addons, this even includes a bluetooth dongle for a bt keyboard
  • the power adapter is very kludgy to lug around

Thanks for the trial folks, it was a great time playing on the unit.

For what it's worth

Comments:

We've given them a lot of feedback on their first stab. Hoping the next gen is a better fit, especially a slight larger keyboard. Next rev should support ATT/Verizon/Sprint mobile networks. Work from anywhere you have signal, not risk of data loss.

Hi,
So what is the run time when using only the on-board battery?
Can one get a loan unit in the UK?

Cheers
Richard

Richard, I don't know that I did any specific timings on the battery but I recall something around the 1.5 to 2 hour mark. As for a loaner in the UK, I would just contact them and see what they can hook you up with. That is all I did, I worked this from the outside in.

We just purchased 2 of the Gobi 8's this week. we are using the Verizon 3g HSDPA cards with great performance! We have also done the WiFI at Panera bread doing mini-browser to accept terms and then VPN into our corp Sun Ray servers. Two things:
1) No USB mass storgae support currently when using WiFI or 3g (Accutech is woring on a fix via firmware)
2) Battery charge status is now displayed doing Stop>B

We've been testing the Gobi8 aswell. I would say the HSDPA is a great feature to have and already getting great feedback from customers seeing this tech and testdriving it.

I don't see any comment on battery duration, I assume this wasn't an issue for you during testing? Gobi8 has even has a little less time the work with because of the HSDPA pcmcia. Would be great to have it work atleast 4 hours without additional power.
