EMT Training

I was sharing with some friends the other day. Here is how the conversation went:

DL: myself, OP: other person
DL: Hey, did you hear that I am going to take an EMT training class?
OP: Really, that is great.
DL: Yeah, but it is not to help other people.
OP: (uncontrolled laughter) Really, then what for?
DL: I want to learn to give myself an IV so that I can hook it right up to the coffee machine.
OP: (more uncontrolled laughter)

So as you can tell my now it was a joke but it has been a great joke to share with some folks.

Yum: Biscotti

So in the ongoing and soon to be ending trial of samples for the new coffee house that our church is going to be opening I just sampled some great biscotti. These came to me from Nikola's Bakery. Just the right level and depth of flavor and a great crunch.

Tasty Mighty Tea

The chruch coffee house is getting near the time when it will open (mid-February '07) and we have made one of the last decisions on suppliers. We are going with Might Leaf Tea for our hot tea needs. I was sampling some yesterday from the company and wow these are some great teas. Of those that I did sample yesterday, I would have to say that my favorite was the Green Tea Tropical. Don't forget that if you are in the area after mid-February '07 make sure you stop by the coffee house and let me know you are coming so that we can share a cup... and if I am there volunteering I might be that barista making your drink for you.

Espresso Gone Wild

Just thought I would share a site that I found that give uncut views into the espresso realm... espresso p.... I did not claim the name was attractive but the shots they are pulling are awesome.

Best Latte Yet

This morning I made my wife a vanilla latte while testing the espresso shots of Caffe Umbria Mezzanotte Blend. It was flavored with DaVinci Vanilla syrup. After my wife got to work she called and let me know that this was the best latte I have every made here, YEAH for me and the products that I used.

Quad Shot Americano

While testing out the coffee that is being planned for the coffee house that my church is putting is place I just made up a quad shot americano. We are planning on using the Gusto Crema from Caffe Umbria. Let me make it clear that quad shot went into a large mug and not something like 12 oz. I have to say that I am really liking this Gusto Crema. They are sending me samples of their Mezzanotte to try for decaf. I am currently at home putting this up against the Black Cat from IntelligensiA.

Kenya Blend Pressed

I just wanted to thank Josh for the sample of home roasted Kenya Blend. Over the weekend ground the beans down for a press pot, steeped it up, pressed it down and enjoyed. It was a great smooth cup of joe. I know I should have written this review as I had the cup since I can't recall the overall taste... not that I am a master of words anyways. Bottom line is the kenya blend was good, thanks Josh.

Whips - Creamy Latte

I just tried a Yoplait Whips! Creamy Latte. As you know I am generally always up for trying coffee flavored products... I vote this one down. I just can't get past the soft coffee flavor with the yogurt after taste.

Press On For Taste

So yesterday I mentioned that I has some nasty coffee. I am glad to say that I did not make the same mistake, I headed out to the coffee house to get a cup this morning... the espresso beans that I ordered should be here today. I was sitting here this afternoon when my phone rings and a collegue from the west coast was calling to "ask the expert" about coffee. Okay, I don't claim to be an expert by any means. He was asking about the user of a press pot so I directed him to a nice piece that Mark Prince had done on "How to Use a Press Pot". I would then also add to check out the Bodum website for some nice pots, in fact I have added one to my Christmas list... if anyone is looking for a gift for me.

Good Coffee Prep... bad coffee

Coffee thought for the day:
Even good coffee preperation can not turn poor coffee into a good cup.

This come from being out of my favorite espresso blend and only having a small amount of preground... nasty flavored coffee laying around. I ran it through the press pot... yuke... I should have skipped it and headed to the coffee shop.

Yummy Samples

So as I have mentioned [1], [2] before the church that we are members is in the midst of a building expansion (39,000 ft2). With this expansion we are adding in a coffee house. I am helping lead the coffee house team... which has some perks. I have all the samples for us to try before starting the ordering process. In a couple of weeks the team is gathering to try all the samples... which makes each day hard for me to not break into them. Reviews to come.

Java™: Specialty coffee?

I was reading this article about the "Specialty coffee retail enjoys booming business". Besides enjoying the commentary on the specialty coffee industry in Korea the other thing that caught my eye was the graphic... take a closer look. It would appear that they have edited in the logos of specialty coffee chains into the photo... and the Java™ logo. So either they are a bit confused or some business in Korea is using the logo as their own.

Smart Coffee

After a few times of listening to the Coffee Geek podcast I just had to try out some of the IntelligentsiA Black Cat Espresso Blend. So from that I ordered some up and introduced my wife to some awesome shots of espresso... far better than I have pulled in the past. This morning she is reversing the rolls on me, she is on travel and is going to go to one of their shops... I hope that she gets a great cup.

Aurelia Come To Me

Finally figured out the machine that we are going to be putting in the coffee house at the church I am a member of. We are going with a Aurelia. Preya or Bucks?

Starpreya vs. Starbucks Time to chalk one up for the little(r) guys. Today the courts ruled in favor of Starpreya over Starbucks. I had not heard about this case until today. Doing a little digging the have very similar looking graphics and branding. I can see the big bucks side of things on this one.

Extra Shot Please

Whenever I am listening to the radio and a story that talks about coffee comes one I perk up and listen in closer. Today I was ablte to hear the story Coffee: A Little Really Does Go a Long Way on Your Health. For the full details take a few minutes and listen in. One of the points that they draw out is that a shot of espresso contains less caffeine than the standard cup of drip coffee. So for those that are getting the espresso based drinks, whatever your favorite is, you are getting a moderate dose of the good stuff without over doing it. The problem is for folks like me that order up their favorite espresso based drink with an extra shot of espresso... so for me that would generally be a 16 oz. latte with three shots of espresso... okay that might be pushing it but you decided for yourself.

No Conversation

Oh the growing pains of podcasting... even for a large company sometimes little things like posting the podcast fail. I will admin I subscribe and listen to Coffee Conversations. They posted episode three and updated the rss feed... but there is now enclosure found, someone forgot to post the audio along witht the show notes.

Espresso and Chocolate Decadence

If you are a coffee lover and you happen to like chocolate have I just tried a recipe that is for you. I found this recipe a while back and printed it out right away. Tonight I finally had a chance to make a back and let me tell you the are as stated decadent.

I did not follow the recipe totally... I used regular flour, non-organic eggs, ... I used what I had and they still turned out wonderful. I understand the need for the full organic way but if you don't have all of those then just make them and enjoy.

The recipe stated that one should expect to get 24 to 36 cookies from the batch and that if you freeze the dough one can just bake as needed. I followed this advice and froze a good portion of the dough. I baked up 16 for a dinner party we are having in a couple of days (and immediately split one with my wife over a glass of milk). I made up the dough balls for the rest and they are freezing away. We ended up getting 48 out of the batch so it all depends on the size of the cookie that one ones.

Now don't get scared off because you have to go and drop some cash on the chocolate covered espresso beans... it is worth it in the end. I used a very nice espresso in the recipe. If you have not heard my recommendation before, try Black Cat Espresso from IntelligentsiA. For the number of plugs that I have given them I am thinking I should be seeing a free pound or two... hint hint if you IntelligensiA boys and girls are listening.

Third Place on the road

I have always been amazed that Starbucks uses super automatic machines and I have been told that the rational is that not matter where you go in the US or maybe the world you will get the same tasting cup of coffee. Well on travel we stopped in to a local coffee, Coffee Smith, and found the same great cup of coffee that I can get back home at my locally owned shop. We noticed as soon as we walked in that Coffee Smith was using the Crimson Cup products and look and feel. The barista was very friendly and struck up a conversation right away. They are using a semi-automatic and the same beans as Coffee Chaos does back home. Same beans and well trained baristas can produce great coffee without having to switch over to dummy proof super automatics and making the coffee house into an order by number experience.

If you are looking for a place to get some consulting I would suggest Third Place Consulting or Crimson Cup. Both that the coffee house thing down. Third Place as I have mentioned before is helping out our church put a coffee house into our expansion.... which by the way is going very well and will be ready in January '07 so don't forget to stop in when you are in the area.

Tamper

Just one step closer to having a full coffee house right in my kitchen. It just arrived so I will let you know later this weekend or next week if I notice a difference in the espresso shots after using the tamper.

Update: Okay I could wait for the weekend. The tamped shots are giving me greater extraction of flavor. So I guess I was not getting a good tamp with the built in tamper... as I would have thought.

Don't Preasure Me... Or My Espresso

Solis Double Shot Filter Basket As you may recall we purchased a Solis SL 70. I absolutely love the machine and we are getting some great shots of espresso for both straight shots as well as espresso based drinks. We have been using the supplied pressurized filter baskets and have been happy. I have had some issues with the double shot basket but have success with the single shot basket. The pressurized basket is suppose to help with crema production and less then great packed shots. All of the reviews that I read before making the purchased suggested getting the non-pressurized basket to get even better espresso shots. Well just before I went to Boston our non-pressurized basket arrived. I ordered a single shot non-pressurized filter basket from Seattle Coffee Gear. When it arrived it was a double shot non-pressurized filter basket. I gave it a run and we are now making some awesome shots from this little machine and I have even figured out the double shot mojo. Still wondering why I received the double shot basket I gave them a call yesterday and they appologized for the mixup and are sending the single shot basket as well. YEAH for customer serivce!!! So if you are Solis SL 70 or 90 users then I also highly recommend getting yourself the non-pressurized filter baskets.

As a side note, my daughter (via my wife) gave me a knock box or tamper for fathers day... still to be ordered.

Raspblaherry

Note to self... grande raspberry latte is not the way to start your day.

I thought I would try something different... well I don't think that I will go back to the raspberry latte. I have found that the coconut is a nice blend of flavors with the espresso. I am sure the raspberry goes well for a later in the day drink of mixed with mocha, ice and whip cream.
