Beta Class for "Directory Server Enterprise Edition 7.0 Maintenance and Operations Class"

Sun Learning Services will be holding a beta class for Sun Directory Server Enterprise Edition (Directory Server EE) 7.0 Administration training in San Francisco, CA, from Tuesday, December 1 through Friday, December 4, 2009. Tuition is waived and there will be no charge for your valued partnership in this review. However, participants are responsible for travel expenses, lodging and incidentals.

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting techniques, monitor and tune servers, create and manage multiple databases, and perform other tasks encountered in day-to-day operations of Directory Server EE 7.0.

Labs acquaint students with the tools included with Directory Server EE. Students should use them to perform tasks such as searching and modifying directory data, exporting and importing data, starting and stopping servers, and troubleshooting. Students should also migrate server versions, create multiple databases, configure servers for replication, and tune
performance.

This course focuses on maintenance and operations issues related to Directory Server EE rather than planning and design issues. For planning and design topics, refer to DIR-2217: Sun Java(TM) System Directory Server Enterprise Edition: Analysis and Planning. If you are already extremely familiar with Directory Server EE, this course probably covers topics you are already familiar with.

We are looking for attendees who will provide a lot of feedback about the class and how we can improve it. We want students who will ask a lot of difficult and annoying questions that we can't answer, do the labs and make them break, and beat up on the product.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: If you have specific in-depth needs, such as heavy-duty performance tuning or analysis, planning, and architecture, please be advised that this class will NOT meet those needs. If you are new or somewhat new to the product, and need to know how to install and administer the product, use the command-line interface and Directory Server Control Center console, use the logs, and know a little about directory proxy server, this class will be will be an ideal introduction.

PLEASE NOTE: We require a passing level of familiarity with LDAP concepts, such as DN, DIT, RDN, search filter, and base DN. We will not have time to cover basic LDAP concepts during this beta course. You also need to know how to use the Solaris OS (or Linux) command line.

Our classroom space in San Francisco is extremely limited and we will very likely be unable to accommodate all who are interested. Apologies in advance if we cannot accept your enrollment.

If you're interested in attending, please contact David Goldsmith (David.Goldsmith@sun.com) for more information.

DSEE 6.3 Windows Native Package Patch Released

We have just released the windows native (MSI) patch for Directory Server Enterprise Edition (DSEE) 6.3.  This patch was originally delayed due to some issues concerning the patching process on Windows. These have now been resolved and you can download the patch from here: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-21-125311-07-1

This patch is only for installations of DSEE that were installed on Windows 2000 or 2003 using the Jave Enterprise System installer.  If you do not have DSEE 6.3 already installed on this system you will need to download the DSEE 6.0 full release for Windows and then apply this patch after you have installed it.  You can download the full DSEEE 6.0 Windows Native MSI installation bundle from the following location:  Directory Server EE 6.0 - java_es-5-identsuite-ga-windows-x86.zip - Part of Identity Management Suite, Multi-language (DS/DPS/Console)

NOTE: This download is actually part of the Sun Identity Suite.  When you download this you can then run the installer and select to install only the Directory Server Enterprise Edition components.

Another option if you do not have DSEE already installed is to download the 'Compressed Archive" version of the software for Windows which does not use the MSI installer model and requires an App Server (either Tomcat or Sun Java App Server) to run the management console.  You can download this version of the product from: Directory Server EE 6.3 - Zip Distribution, Multi Language, (DS/DPS/DE/ISW/DSRK). This a full installation of DSEE 6.3 so there is no need to install DSEE 6.0 first.

To understand the difference between the Native Package distribution and the Compressed Archive distribution see the documentation at: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2763/install-distributions?a=view

DSEE Software Distributions

This information compares the different Directory Server Enterprise Edition software distributions available and is taken from the main DSEE 6.3 documentation at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2763/install-distributions?a=view.

Figure 1–3 The Two Software Distributions

To install all software, get both distributions.

Java Enterprise System Distribution

This section introduces the Java Enterprise System distribution, which comes with the Java ES installer.

The Java ES installer offers a graphical wizard, a command-line interactive wizard, and also silent installation capabilities to add natively packaged software to your system. As this distribution is based on native packages, you must be root to perform the installation with the Java ES installer.

The Java ES installer provides a fresh installation of Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 on Solaris and Linux. To install Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 on Windows, see Installation Procedure Quick Reference in Sun Java System Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 Installation Guide. Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 is not delivered on HP-UX.

All Java ES software can work together, relying on a common framework of basic components and of libraries. You can therefore install all the software products together on a single system.

The Java ES installation software also facilitates installation of shared components. The software integrates with the system, so you can configure directory services to restart automatically when the operating system reboots. With a native package based installation, you benefit from the package versioning and patching tools that are part of the operating system.

This guide does not describe all installation alternatives available using the Java ES installer. However, this guide addresses the key Java ES installer wizard screens related to Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.2 software installation. For detailed instructions on using all features of the Java ES installer, see the Java Enterprise System documentation at http://docs.sun.com/coll/1286.3.

Native Patches

This section introduces the native patches that enable you to upgrade Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 and 6.1 installations.

You must be root to do the installation using native patches. These patches are applied on the top of the existing Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 or 6.1 installation. Native patches contain all the components of Directory Server Enterprise Edition as in Java Enterprise System distribution but upgrade the only components that are already installed as a part of Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 or 6.1 installation. You cannot do fresh installation of any of the components in Directory Server Enterprise Edition using native patches.

You can install Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 on Windows by installing native patches on the top of Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.0 installation. The Java Enterprise System distribution does not provide fresh installation for Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6.3 on Windows.

Zip Distribution

This section introduces the zip distribution, which provides the dsee_deploy(1M) command-line installer.

This distribution offers self-contained software that you can install anywhere on local disk where you have write permission. You can both install and administer zip distribution software as a non-root user.

As zip distribution software is self-contained, each software installation performed from the zip distribution is independent. You can therefore install software from multiple zip distribution versions on the same system. Your system administrator must manually configure the software that you install to restart when the operating system reboots.

Furthermore, with the zip distribution, you must keep careful track of what you have installed, and the patches you have applied.

Comparison of Java Enterprise System Distribution and Zip Distribution

This section identifies the software supported in each distribution.

Both the Java ES and zip distributions allow you to create and configure Directory Server and Directory Proxy Server instances as non-root.
