Minimize Garbage Generation: GC is your Friend, not your Servant

Automatic memory management, a.k.a Garbage Collection, is one of the main benefits of a managed object-oriented language like Java. But in many ways its presence has made us lazy and sloppy: we don't care about generating garbage because "objects are cheap" and "the GC can clean it up easily".
