What's new in Oracle Linux Part 2: latencytop

One of the new utilities included with Oracle Linux 5.5 is latencytop, available as both a console tool and a GUI application.

Latencytop helps identify where latency in the system is affecting the performance of an application.  The point is to locate a resource that is either busy or non-responsive.

Here is an example of the GUI version of latencytop, looking at a program that is busy creating millions of files in a directory.

Most of the time is spent either waiting for the CPU, truncating files, or writing the buffer to disk.  Lets see what happens when a second instance of this program is run simultaneously.

Notice that the amount of time spent waiting for the disk to flush has gone up tremendously.

Use latencytop with your own applications, other vendor's applications, and even system processes.

For more information, including how to use the command line version, see http://www.latencytop.org/.
