We just got back after driving the wife's prius to Canada and was very surprised to find that we were only averaging around 18.7 miles per gallon of fuel on the trip !!
It reminded me of the Oracle DBA who was shocked that the new application that was running on the very latest and greatest version of the database was taking hours to run. It turned out that the new application had introduced some poorly written sql that was not using some of the performance features in the database. After reworking the sql the same application ran in minutes as opposed to hours.
