We are pleased to announce that Oracle APEX 20.1 is now available on Oracle Autonomous Database. Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a low-code application development platform which is included with every Oracle Database and is also provided with every Oracle Database Cloud Service, including Oracle Autonomous Database and the Oracle Cloud Free Tier.

Oracle APEX is one of the market-leading low-code development platforms for rapidly building opportunistic and data-driven enterprise applications. APEX, combined with Oracle Database, provides a fully integrated environment to build, deploy, maintain and monitor data-driven business applications that look great on mobile and desktop devices. Oracle Autonomous Database is a fully managed, highly secure, scalable, and optimized cloud service that can be provisioned in minutes. Developers can easily spin up an Autonomous Database instance (Autonomous Transaction Processing or Autonomous Data Warehouse) using Oracle Cloud Free Tier, configure the APEX environment, and start building apps in just a few minutes.

Oracle APEX 20.1 introduces a number of new features that further improve developer productivity and the user experience. Some of the key improvements in this release include the following:

  • Redwood User Interface
  • Friendly URLs
  • Faceted Search Enhancements
  • Native PDF Printing
  • Improved Application Lifecycle Management
  • Mega Menus

Redwood User Interface: The user interface of APEX and the App Builder has been refreshed with Redwood design, Oracle's new user experience design system. The new interface and color scheme extends across the full developer experience and provides refreshing new visuals. The appearance of APEX can now automatically switch between the dark and light appearance modes based on your OS or platform setting, enabling APEX to seamlessly integrate with your workflow.

Friendly URLs: The URL syntax for APEX apps has been simplified to allow for friendlier URLs at runtime. The new syntax provides a Search Engine Optimization (SEO)-friendly URL structure which is far easier to understand and provides immediate context as to where you are within an app. Applications created using APEX 20.1 or later use Friendly URL Syntax. You change existing applications to use Friendly URLs by editing the Friendly URLs attribute in the application Definition

Faceted Search Enhancements: Faceted Search has been enhanced to enable a cascading list of values, conditional facets, and compact count display, among other features.

Native PDF PrintingYou can now print PDF files directly from Interactive Grids. This feature produces a PDF file which includes formatting options such as highlighting, column grouping, and column breaks.

Improved Application Lifecycle ManagementThere have been numerous improvements in application lifecycle management including one-click app deployments, automated backups, zip exports, and more. These features make it easy to deploy APEX apps and integrate it into your existing workflow.

Mega Menus: Mega Menu Navigation renders application navigation as a collapsible floating panel that displays all navigation items at once. You can select Mega Menu navigation when building an application in the Create Application Wizard.

To receive the APEX 20.1 upgrade, customers must be on Oracle Database 19c. Customers who are on Oracle Database 18c will need to upgrade the database in order to get APEX 20.1.  As in every APEX release, a number of enhancements and bugs fixes have been made to the productivity and sample applications.  Additionally, numerous bugs have been fixed in APEX 20.1, resulting in even higher quality and stability for APEX environments. Refer to the Release Notes and this blog to learn more about these improvements in the APEX 20.1 release.
