OS Wars

So I'm becoming obsessive about my stats. I use StatCounter to keep track of the webstats for my blog, and am always interested to see where my readers (what few of you there are) are coming from. It's not just the overall hit-count (which is, frankly, pretty anemic). Raw numbers are not that interesting. StatCounter is free -- for a limited log size -- and is able to collect some impressive stats on a website. I have been using it on this blog, as well as a bunch of other sites I maintain and run, for a while and love it. Aside from the raw numbers and hit-counts, there are lots of other interesting stats like referrers, returning visitors, keyword analysis (what people are searching for when they find my blog), etc.

So one of the more interesting things is the distribution of Operating Systems and Browsers. First the OSes:

As I (and probably everyone else) expected, Windows is at the top of the list. Surprising to me is the strength of Linux! Sadly Mac OS X is trailing even Vista, but Linux!? Wow. Who knew.

Next up is the browser. For everyone who thought that the Browser Wars ended years ago and that Microsoft IE won, think again. It is clear to me that IE has lost. Big time.

Firefox and Mozilla trounce IE. Handily. I was still under the (apparently) mistaken impression that most PC users just used IE. But this would indicate that Firefox/Mozilla is the true winner.

But the one I like the best is the Visitor Map.

It shows where my readers live, or at least where they are reading my blog from. Google Mashups at their best. Readers from all over the planet.

Thanks for reading. And keep coming back!
