Ameristar Wins with Oracle GoldenGate’s Heterogeneous Real-Time Data Integration

Today we announced a press release about another successful project with Oracle GoldenGate. This time at Ameristar. Ameristar is a casino gaming company and needed a single data integration solution to connect multiple heterogeneous systems to its Teradata data warehouse.

The project involves integration of Ameristar’s promotional and gaming data from 14 data sources across its 7 casino hotel properties in real time into a central Teradata data warehouse. The source systems include the Aristocrat gaming and MGT promotional management platforms running on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 databases.

As you can notice, there was no Oracle Database involved in this project, but Ameristar’s IT leadership knew that  GoldenGate’s strong heterogeneous and real-time data integration capabilities is the right technology for their data warehousing project. With GoldenGate Ameristar was able to reduce data latency to the enterprise data warehouse, and use this real-time customer information for marketing teams in improving overall customer experience. Ameristar customers receive more targeted and timely campaign offers, and the company has more up-to-date visibility into financial metrics of the company.

One other key benefit the company experienced with GoldenGate is in operational costs. The previous data capture solution Ameristar used was trigger based and required a lot of effort to manage. They needed dedicated IT staff to maintain it. With GoldenGate, the solution runs seamlessly without needing a fully-dedicated staff, giving the IT team at Ameristar more resources for their other IT projects.

If you want to learn more about GoldenGate and the latest features for Oracle Database and non-Oracle databases, please watch our on demand webcast about Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2.

And the Winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards in Data Integration are…

At OpenWorld, we announced the winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2012. Raymond James and Morrison Supermarkets were selected for the data integration category for their innovative use of Oracle’s data integration products and the great results they have achieved.

In this blog I would like to briefly introduce you to these award winning projects.

Raymond James is a diversified financial services company, which provides financial planning, wealth management, investment banking, and asset management. They are using Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator to feed their operational data store (ODS), which supports application services across the enterprise. A major requirement for their project was low data latency, as key decisions are made based on the data in the ODS. They were able to fulfill this requirement due to the Oracle Data Integrator’s integrated solution with Oracle GoldenGate.

Oracle GoldenGate captures changed data from different systems including Oracle Database, HP NonStop and Microsoft SQL Server into a single data store on SQL Server 2008. Oracle Data Integrator provides data transformations for the ODS. Leveraging ODI’s integration with GoldenGate, Raymond James now sees a 9 second median latency (from source commit to ODS target commit).

The ODS solution delivers high quality, accurate data for consuming applications such as Raymond James’ next generation client and portfolio management systems as well as real-time operational reporting. It enables timely information for making better decisions.

There are more benefits Raymond James achieved with this implementation of Oracle’s data integration solution. The software developers and architects of this solution, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett, have told us during their presentation at OpenWorld that they also reduced application complexity significantly while improving developer productivity through trusted operational services. They were able to utilize CDC to generate alerts for business users, and for applications (for example for cache hydration mechanisms).

One cool innovation example among many in this project is that using ODI's flexible architecture, Tim and Ryan could build 24/7 self-healing processes. And these processes have hardly failed. Integration process fixes the errors itself. Pretty amazing; and a great solution for environments that need such reliability and availability. (You can see Tim and Ryan’s photo with the Innovation Awards trophy above.)

The other winner of this year in the data integration category, Morrison Supermarkets, is the UK’s 4th largest grocery retailer. The company has been migrating all their legacy applications on to a new-world application set based on Oracle and consolidating all BI on to a single Oracle platform. The company recently implemented Oracle Exadata as the data warehouse engine and uses Oracle Business Intelligence EE.

Their goal with deploying GoldenGate and ODI was to provide BI data to the enterprise in a way that it also supports operational decision making requirements from a wide range of Oracle based ERP applications such as E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle Retail Suite. They use GoldenGate’s log-based change data capture capabilities and Oracle Data Integrator to populate the Oracle Retail Data Model. The electronic point of sale (EPOS) integration solution they built processes over 80 million transactions/day at busy periods in near real time (15 mins). It provides valuable insight to Retail and Commercial teams for both intra-day and historical trend analysis.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the right data integration platform can transform the business. Here is another example: The point-of-sale integration enabled the grocery chain to optimize its stock management, leading to another award: Morrisons won the Grocer 33 award in 2012 - beating all other major UK supermarkets in product availability. Congratulations, Morrisons,on another award!

Celebrating the innovation and the success of our customers with Oracle’s data integration products was definitely a highlight of Oracle OpenWorld for me. I look forward to hearing more from Raymond James, Morrisons, and the other customers that presented their data integration projects at OpenWorld, on how they are creating more value for their organizations.

Top 3 Ways to Leverage Oracle GoldenGate with MySQL Databases

One of the key differentiators of Oracle GoldenGate in the real-time data integration and data replication technology space is its heterogeneity. It provides log-based change data capture, routing, transformation, and delivery between heterogeneous systems. MySQL is one of the heterogeneous platforms that GoldenGate can support both as source and target.

The most common ways Oracle GoldenGate is used with MySQL are real-time data warehousing, real-time reporting, and query offloading. In real-time data warehousing use case, Oracle GoldenGate feeds online transaction data from Web properties running on MySQL databases to the data warehouse in real time, to enable a complete and reliable view of the business operations. Oracle GoldenGate can feed all major data warehouses including Oracle Exadata, Teradata, IBM Netezza, Greenplum etc.

MySQL is heavily used for departmental enterprise applications including analytical systems. Oracle GoldenGate can deliver real-time data from production OLTP systems to data marts running on MySQL to support operational reporting and analytical applications. This enables analytical systems to have access to up-to-date information when supporting operational decision making.

Last but not least, GoldenGate can enable query offloading from production OLTP systems that may be on a mainframe (such as DB2 z/Series) or open systems (such as  MSFT SQL Server or Sybase ASE). Oracle GoldenGate can move all or a portion of transactional data in real time from production databases to MySQL databases to allow the end users to run their queries and reports on the dedicated server rather than on the production server. This approach is a great way to reduce TCO and maximize the performance of production OLTP systems. In addition, it allows to optimize the database for reporting purposes. Especially in travel and ecommerce industry it helps reduce browsing activity related overhead on OLTP systems.

To read more about how to leverage Oracle GoldenGate please check out our new MySQL and Oracle GoldenGate spotlight document and check the additional resources provided.

How Sprint Overcame Data Replication Challenges with Oracle GoldenGate

In today’s 24/7, fast-paced world, real-time data replication is a critical technology to support mission-critical systems. The real challenge is to perform this real-time data movement with a solution that is flexible and reliable in terms of speed and data delivery. At OpenWorld 2011 we will hear from an industry leader, Sprint , how they leveraged Oracle GoldenGate in achieving real-time data replication with high-speed, reliability and flexibility to support heterogeneous data sources.

Sprint implemented GoldenGate in multiple strategic projects. One of these key projects that this session will highlight is their data warehousing solution. Sprint uses GoldenGate to feed customer billing information from their hosted billing systems to their on-premise Data Warehouse, giving them a complete picture of their business. The session will include the techniques Sprint used to meet target environment’s SLAs and how they handled end-of-day processing challenges in its data warehouse, using Oracle GoldenGate's high-performance and low-impact data integration technology.

Another important project that Sprint will cover is their database upgrades with Oracle GoldenGate, which they were able to complete without interrupting their business operations.

I strongly recommend attending this session, to hear from Sprint's GoldenGate expert directly how they selected the technology and how they used it in solving multiple challenges across their organization.

ELT: Optimized for Greater Control and Flexibility

There are two approaches to consider for data integration: ELT and ETL (see the blog on Don't Push ELT Around for some of the benefits of the ELT approach. There are also some interesting benefits beyond simply the performance benefits resulting from a localized transformation.

For example, ELT also provides the best possible SQL code generated on any given machine. Since this SQL is localized for the environment where they run, they can be optimized, streamlined, and maintained in their native environments. The ELT approach will generate native SQL for the underlying databases and optimize the code for these databases. There is no translation from pseudo-code into SQL. No generic SQL is required.

On the contrary, the E-T-L approach generates SQL code which is a translation of proprietary code into SQL. This approach will have many limitations: not all transformation functions can be properly translated (the SQL logic would be so different that the entire workflow would have to be re-designed); because the transformations are translated, the resulting code tends to be “all or nothing”. For instance, an ELT can generate code on any system, source and or target, to take advantage of the specifics of the different technologies available. A typical ETL engine will only allow for one of the systems to be used.
The next challenge will be the level of control on the generated code. Because ETL tools will translate from their internal code into SQL, they cannot easily allow for the customization of the generated code (they have to give you the option of going back to a transformation in the engine: doing so with customized SQL code becomes problematic). With an ELT logic, the developers have total control over the SQL code that is generated, and can modify it as needed from within their graphical interfaces to make sure that the generated code is the best possible code for any given platform.
