OTN Virtual Technology Summit Data Integration Subtrack Features Big Data Integration and Governance

I am sure many of you have heard about the quarterly Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Virtual Technology Summits. It provides a hands-on learning experience on the latest offerings from Oracle by bringing experts from our community and product management team. 

The next OTN Virtual Technology Summit is scheduled to February 11th (9am-12:30pm PT) and will feature Oracle's big data integration and metadata management capabilities with hands-on-lab content.

Feb 11th 9:30am PT -- HOL: Real-Time Data Replication to Hadoop using GoldenGate 12c Adaptors

Oracle GoldenGate 12c is well known for its highly performant data replication between relational databases. With the GoldenGate Adaptors, the tool can now apply the source transactions to a Big Data target, such as HDFS. In this session, we'll explore the different options for utilizing Oracle GoldenGate 12c to perform real-time data replication from a relational source database into HDFS. The GoldenGate Adaptors will be used to load movie data from the source to HDFS for use by Hive. Next, we'll take the demo a step further and publish the source transactions to a Flume agent, allowing Flume to handle the final load into the targets.

Feb 11th 10:30am PT -- HOL: Bringing Oracle Big Data SQL to Oracle Data Integration 12c Mappings

Oracle Big Data SQL extends Oracle SQL and Oracle Exadata SmartScan technology to Hadoop, giving developers the ability to execute Oracle SQL transformations against Apache Hive tables and extending the Oracle Database data dictionary to the Hive metastore. In this session we'll look at how Oracle Big Data SQL can be used to create ODI12c mappings against both Oracle Database and Hive tables, to combine customer data held in Oracle tables with incoming purchase activities stored on a Hadoop cluster. We'll look at the new transformation capabilities this gives you over Hadoop data, and how you can use ODI12c's Sqoop integration to copy the combined dataset back into the Hadoop environment.

Feb 11th 11:30am PT-- An Introduction to Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager
This session takes a deep technical dive into the recently released Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager. You’ll see the standard features of data lineage, impact analysis and version management applied across a myriad of Oracle and non-Oracle technologies into a consistent metadata whole, including Oracle Database, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Business Intelligence and Hadoop. This session will examine the Oracle Enterprise Metadata Manager "bridge" architecture and how it is similar to the ODI knowledge module. You will learn how to harvest individual sources of metadata, such as OBIEE, ODI, the Oracle Database and Hadoop, and you will learn how to create OEMM configurations that contain multiple metadata stores as a single coherent metadata strategy.

Recap of Oracle GoldenGate 12c for the Enterprise and the Cloud webcast

Last week I hosted a webcast on Oracle GoldenGate 12c's latest features and its solutions for cloud environments. For those of you who missed it, I wanted to give a quick recap and remind that you can watch it on-demand via the following link:

In this webcast my colleague Chai Pydimukkala, senior director of product management for Oracle GoldenGate and I talked about some of the key challenges in cloud deployments and how Oracle GoldenGate addresses them. We discussed examples of cloud-specific data integration use cases, such as synchronizing data between on-premises systems and Oracle Cloud or Amazon Cloud environments. We also discussed zero downtime consolidation to cloud using Oracle GoldenGate.

In the webcast, Chai also presented  the latest features of Oracle GoldenGate 12.1.x including:

  • New database support, including Informix, SQL Server 2014, MySQL Community Edition
  • Real-time data integration between on-premises and cloud with SOCKS5 compliance
  • New features in Oracle GoldenGate Veridata especially the new data repair capabilities
  • Enhancements to Integrated Delivery, and support for capturing data from Active Data Guard standby system
  • The new migration utility to help with the move from Oracle Streams to Oracle GoldenGate.
As with previous GoldenGate webcasts we had a very interactive Q&A where we received tons of questions. We tried answer as much as possible in the available time but could not get to all of them.  Below are some of the commonly asked questions we received during the webcast and brief answers:

Question: Does GoldenGate replace ODI? When shall we use an ETL tool vs GoldenGate?

Answer: GoldenGate is designed for real-time, change data capture, routing, and delivery. It  performs basic, row level transformations. For complex transformation requirements you still need ETL/E-LT solutions. Our customers augment their existing ETL/E-LT solutions by adding GoldenGate for real-time, low-impact change data capture and delivery. GoldenGate can deliver data for ETL in flat file format, or feed staging tables, or it can be JMS messages.Oracle Data Integrator's E-LT architecture creates perfect combination as GoldenGate can capture changed data non-intrusively with low-impact, and deliver to staging tables in the target with sub-seconds latency. With ability to perform transformations within the target (or source) database, ODI takes this change data, performs transformations in micro-batches and loads user tables with high performance. Because of this natural and strategic fit between the products, we have tightly integrated ODI and GoldenGate.To learn more about how GoldenGate and ODI are integrated and work together, please watch this on-demand webcast. Question: Is there a plan to sell GoldenGate as a service soon?

Answer: Yes, it is in the plans. We are working with the Oracle Cloud team. But we are not able to give a timeline.

Question: Are Integrated Capture and Delivery only available for Oracle Database or this can be used for non-Oracle databases?

Answer: Integrated Capture and Delivery are only available for Oracle Database and truly differentiate Oracle GoldenGate against other data integration and replication vendors. We offer Coordinated Delivery for all supported databases. Coordinated Delivery simplifies configuration significantly as well and it works with non-Oracle databases too. You can read more about Coordinated Delivery in a related blog,  via Oracle GoldenGate 12c Release 1 New Features Overview white paper or documentation.

Question: Is GoldenGate available for download for trial?

Answer: Yes, you can download GoldenGate on OTN for education and development purposes: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/goldengate/downloads/index.html.  For big data use case, you can use Big Data Lite virtual environment to experiment with Oracle GoldenGate. 

Question: Does GoldenGate replace Active Data Guard? 

 No. The products are complementary. Data Guard is a physical replication solution designed for Oracle Database disaster recovery and offers it with great simplicity and performance. Oracle GoldenGate offers logical/transactional data replication which supplements Active Data Guard by eliminating downtime during planned outages (migration, consolidation, maintenance), and active-active data center synchronization for maximum availability. License for Oracle GoldenGate for Oracle Database includes also Active Data Guard. As mentioned in the webcast, GoldenGate 12c now can capture data from Active Data Guard's standby system too.

Question:  Does the GoldenGate Veridata repair subset of data instead of doing full sync ? Example : I want to repair only missed deletes.

Yes. Oracle GoldenGate Veridata can do granular repair for out-of-sync records. Please see our Oracle GoldenGate Veridata data sheet for more info.

Question: How do we use Enterprise Manager for GoldenGate? 

Answer: Oracle Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate license includes a Enterprise Manager Plug-in that allows you to use your Oracle Enterprise Manager solution to monitor and manage Oracle GoldenGate solutions.

Let Oracle GoldenGate 12c Take You to the Cloud

If your organization is in the ~80% of the global business community, you are most likely working on a cloud computing strategy for your organization, or actively implementing. Oracle GoldenGate 12c Capture for SQL Server

In Oracle GoldenGate 12c we have expanded the heterogeneity of the product by adding support for the latest versions of the major databases. 

In Oracle GoldenGate 12.1.2.0.1 for SQL Server, which is available for download on My Oracle Support, we offer support for capturing from and delivering to SQL Server 2012. Oracle GoldenGate 12c also supports SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Capture and Delivery.

Two other highly anticipated new features for Oracle GoldenGate 12c for SQL Server, are the ability for Capture to read from SQL Server compressed transaction log backups and the ability to restrict the need for Capture to read from transaction log backups, required when customers use 3rd party transaction log backup utilities.

Some of the key capabilities of Oracle GoldenGate for SQL Server are as follows:

  • Oracle GoldenGate now supports Capture from SQL Server 2012 beginning with GoldenGate 12.1.2.0.1.
  • Oracle GoldenGate for SQL Server can be configured to Capture from tables without Primary Keys.
  • Oracle GoldenGate 12c for SQL Server supports SQL Server native backup compression and includes the optional configuration to never have to read from transaction log backups, which enables any log backup utility to be used.
  • Capture process can work in conjunction with SQL Server Transactional Replication, and Change Data Capture.
  • Oracle GoldenGate for SQL Server can provide real-time data to heterogeneous target databases, and receive real-time data from heterogeneous databases.

New Release for Oracle GoldenGate Monitor is here!

Oracle GoldenGate Management Pack provides extensive enterprise-wide monitoring and management of your Oracle GoldenGate solutions The license include:

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in. Provides secure viewing, management, and alerting capabilities for Oracle GoldenGate while leveraging Oracle Enterprise Manager framework 

  • Oracle GoldenGate Monitor. A stand-alone product that provides secure viewing, management, and alerting capabilities for Oracle GoldenGate with end-to-end topology solution displays and customizable topology views

  • Oracle GoldenGate Director. A stand-alone product for basic configuration, management, monitoring, and alerting for legacy Oracle GoldenGate deployments

Oracle GoldenGate Monitor version 12.1.3 was released on June 26th, 2014 and delivers the following new features:

  • Control Oracle GoldenGate processes Capture (Extract) and Delivery (Replicat) by:

    • Initiating "start", "stop", and  "kill" commands
    • Configuration management, and ability to edit configuration files
  • Access report and discard files to understand processing and diagnose problems.

  • Integration with Oracle Web Logic Server 12.1.3 to provide secure single sign on (SSO).

  • New metrics including “Seconds Since Last GoldenGate Checkpoint”, and a class of “delta” metrics that track the change between samples for existing “total count” metrics.

  • Support for monitoring Oracle GoldenGate instances running on IBM DB2 for z/OS

Zero Downtime Consolidation to Oracle Database 12c: Webcast Recap

As companies move to private cloud implementations to increase agility and reduce costs, and start their plans with consolidating their databases, a major question arises: how do we move our systems without causing major disruption to the business. At the end, the most important systems that need to move to this new architecture are the ones that cannot tolerate extensive downtime for any reason. In last week’s webcast “Zero Downtime Consolidation to Oracle Database 12c with Oracle GoldenGate 12c” we tackled this specific dilemma that IT organizations face. The webcast is now available on demand via the link above in case you missed it last week.

In the webcast, we started discussing the benefits companies achieve when they consolidate to a private database cloud, critical database capabilities to deliver database as a service, and a quick overview Oracle Database 12c features that enable private database clouds deployments. Nick Wagner, director of product management for Oracle Database High Availability, talked about the new Global Data Services feature in Oracle Database Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) as well. Global Data Services helps organizations to handle challenges involved with managing multiple database replicas across different sites. The product manages database replicas of Active Data Guard and Oracle GoldenGate products, and offers workload balancing to maximize performance as well as intelligent handling of outages using all available replicas. Nick also discussed the database features available for upgrading, migrating, and consolidating into Oracle Database 12c and when it makes sense to use Oracle GoldenGate for these efforts.

After Nick, Chai Pydimukkala from senior director of product management for GoldenGate discussed some of the key new features of Oracle GoldenGate 12c for Oracle Database and its expanding heterogeneity that supports consolidation from all major databases. Chai continued his presentation with GoldenGate’s solution architecture for zero downtime consolidation and explained how it minimizes risk with failback option as well as via the phased migration option by running old and new environments concurrently.

Chai also gave an example on how Oracle Active Data Guard customers can seamlessly use GoldenGate for a zero downtime migration without affecting their standby system for high ongoing high availability and disaster recoery. 2) Does GoldenGate have a term license that customer can purchase for migration purposes?

We do offer 1 year license that customer can be used for this purposes.

3) Is there a Oracle Tutorial on configuring and testing Zero downtime upgrade using GoldenGate?

Here is a high level outline/tutorial for the migration. It will require some knowledge of how to setup GoldenGate and configuration.

4) If the number of updates to the database is very high, does GoldenGate give some kind of compression to transfer the Trail Files and be up to date with the changes?

Oracle GoldenGate does provide support of compress of change data in the Trail File to better the transfer throughput from source to target with the usage of COMPRESS and COMPRESSTHRESHOLD.

This option is valid for online or batch Capture processes and any Oracle GoldenGate initial-load method that uses Trails. Compresses outgoing blocks of records to reduce bandwidth requirements. Oracle GoldenGate decompresses the data before writing it to the Trail. COMPRESS typically results in compression ratios of at least 4:1 and sometimes better. However, compressing data can consume CPU resources.

COMPRESSTHRESHOLD

This option is valid for online or batch Capture processes and any Oracle GoldenGate initial-load method that uses trails. Sets the minimum block size for which compression is to occur. Valid values are from 0 and through 28000. The default is 1,000 bytes.

5) Can the Source system utilize 12C GoldenGate for DML/DDL capture and target system utilize GoldenGate 11g?

Yes.  You can replicate from a higher version of GoldenGate to a lower version using FORMAT RELEASE option.

IT teams receive pressures on multiple fronts: Business groups demand new application services delivered faster and continuous, high-quality IT service to support highly dynamic and competitive business operations. What's New in Oracle GoldenGate 12c for DB2 iSeries

Oracle GoldenGate 12c (12.1.2.0.1) for IBM DB2 iSeries was released on February 15, 2014. The new version delivers the following new features: 

  • Native Delivery (Replicat): the new feature allows the user to install Oracle GoldenGate on the IBM i server and delivers the data directly to the IBM DB2 for i database. In previous releases, users had to install Oracle GoldenGate on a remote server and apply the data to the IBM DB2 for i database via ODBC. The native delivery not only improves the performance but also supports the GRAPHIC, VARGRAPHIC and DBCLOB datatypes, which are not supported in the ODBC remote delivery for IBM DB2 for i. 
  • Schema Wildcarding: as with other databases that Oracle GoldenGate supports, the schema wildcarding is now available for the IBM DB2 for i database as well.
  • Auto discard: the discard file is now created by default. 
  • Coordinated Delivery (Replicat):  the coordinated delivery is supported in the native delivery (replicat). 
  • BATCHSQL: supported on IBM i 7.1 and higher version.

What's New in Oracle GoldenGate 12c for Teradata

Oracle GoldenGate 12c (12.1.2.0.1) for Teradata was released on April 24, 2014; it is currently available for download at eDelivery (https://edelivery.oracle.com). In this release, the following new features are available:

  • Capture and delivery support for Teradata 14.10. The support is based on Teradata Access Module (TAM) 13.10 with no support for the capture of the NUMBER or VARRAY datatypes.
  • Delivery support for Teradata 15.0.
  • Coordinated delivery (replicat): provides the ability to spawn multiple Oracle GoldenGate replicat processes from one parameter file.

Oracle GoldenGate for Teradata’s statement of direction has been updated in the Oracle GoldenGate Statement of Direction document.

Recap of Oracle GoldenGate 12c Webcast with Q&A

Simply amazing! That’s how I would summarize last week’s webcast for Oracle GoldenGate 12c.  It was a very interactive event with hundreds of live attendees and hundreds of great questions. In the presentation part my colleagues, Doug Reid and Joe deBuzna, went over the new features of Oracle GoldenGate 12c. They explained Oracle GoldenGate 12c key new features including:

  • Integrated Delivery for Oracle Database,
  • Coordinated Delivery for non-Oracle databases,
  • Support for Oracle Database 12c multitenant architecture,
  • Enhanced high availability via integration with Oracle Data Guard Fast-Start Failover,
  • Expanded heterogeneity, i.e. support for new databases and operating systems,
  • Improved security,
  • Low-downtime database migration solutions for Oracle E-Business Suite,
  • Integration with Oracle Coherence.

We also had a nice long and live Q&A section. In the previous Oracle GoldenGate webcasts, we could not respond to all audience questions in a 10-15 minute timeframe at the end of the presentation. This time we kept the presentation part short and left more than 30 minutes for Q&A. To our surprise, we could not answer even half of the questions we received.

On this blog post I would like to provide brief answers from our PM team  for some of the questions that we were not able to answer during the live webcast.

1) Does Oracle GoldenGate replicate DDL statements or DML for Oracle Database?

    Oracle GoldenGate replicates DML and DDL operations for Oracle Database and Teradata.

2) Where do we get more info on how to setup integration with Data Guard Fast-Start Failover (FSFO)?

3) Does GoldenGate support SQL Server 2012 extraction? In the past only apply was supported.

Yes, starting with the new 12c release GoldenGate captures from SQL Server 2012 in addition to delivery capabilities.

4) Which RDBMS does GoldenGate 12c support?

GoldenGate supports all major RDBMS. For a full list of supported platforms please see Oracle GoldenGate certification matrix.

5) Could you provide some more details please on Integrated Delivery for dynamic parallel threads at Target side?

6) What is the best way to sync partial data (based on some selection criterion) from a table between databases?

7) How can GoldenGate be better than database trigger to push data into custom tables?

Triggers can cause high CPU overhead, in some cases almost double compared to reading from redo or transaction logs. In addition, they are intrusive to the application and cause management overhead as application changes. Oracle GoldenGate's log-based change data capture is not only low-impact in terms of CPU utilization, but also non-intrusive to the application with low maintenance requirements.

8) Are there any customers in the manufacturing industry using GoldenGate and for which application?

We have many references in manufacturing. In fact, SolarWorld USA was our guest speaker in the executive video webcast last November. You can watch the interview here. RIM Blackberry uses Oracle GoldenGate for multi-master replication between its global manufacturing systems. Here is another manufacturing customer story from AkzoNobel.

9) Does GoldenGate 12c support compressed objects for replication? Also does it supports BLOB/CLOB columns?

Yes, GoldenGate 12c and GoldenGate 11gR2 both support compressed objects. GoldenGate has been supporting BLOB/CLOB columns since version 10.

10) Is Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 mandatory to use GoldenGate 12c Integrated Delivery? Not earlier versions?

Yes. To use GoldenGate 12c’s Integrated Delivery, for the target environment Oracle Database 11.2.04 and above is required .

11) We have Oracle Streams implementation for more than 5 years. We would like to migrate to GoldenGate, however older version of GoldenGate were not supporting filtering individual transactions. Is it supported in GoldenGate 12c?

      Yes, it is supported in GoldenGate 12c.

    Recap of Oracle GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c Launch Webcast

    Last week we had a great video webcast for Oracle GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c. Our development executives, Brad Adelberg and Tim Hall,  talked about the new features and how the new release helps with delivering future-ready data integration solutions with extreme performance and high IT productivity.

    In previous blogs we have talked about the new features of Oracle GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c, so I am not going to repeat them here. But worth repeating are what our customers and partners say about the new 12c release.

    SolarWorld’s Senior Database Administrator, Russ Toyama was in the studio with our executives for the launch webcast, and Russ discussed their GoldenGate implementation for SolarWorld's manufacturing process. SolarWorld is the largest U.S. solar panel manufacturer for more than 35 years and needed operational intelligence to continuously improve the quality of its products, while ensuring the systems operate with high performance and stability.

    SolarWorld uses GoldenGate to move data from multiple manufacturing databases into a single decision support system database in real time, freeing up the OLTP systems for transaction processing, which improves their performance and stability. The DSS database is very flexible in meeting reporting needs, and provides a comprehensive view of multiple manufacturing processes. This provides the traditional roles of reporting and engineering analysis to continuously improve product quality, yield and efficiency, and enables real time monitoring of the production manufacturing process. Using this real-time monitoring capability SolarWorld is able to detect the deviations from the norm right away, and take action to remedy or understand the situation. This not only improves production quality, but also improves cost management. The manufacturing process is a series of steps building upon the previous, so if there is an issue, it needs to be corrected as soon as possible to prevent waste and reduce manufacturing costs.

    For GoldenGate 12c we heard from Surren Partabh, CTO for Technology Services for BT. Surren explained the role of Oracle GoldenGate for their private cloud initiative and how they have improved customer experience and availability, while managing costs as well.  Surren highlighted that Oracle's data integration product family is one of the cornerstones for BT"s cloud migration project and enable to migrate to cloud simply, and in an agile manner. BT used GoldenGate to build a replication hub to help with the migration from legacy systems to the cloud with a reliable fallback strategy. Surren also commented on the tight integration between GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c,  saying that it is a "step in the right direction" as it simplifies the actual installation, configuration, management, and monitoring of solutions.     In the launch webcast we also heard from Mark Rittman, CTO of Rittman Mead Consulting. Mark talked about the Oracle Data Integrator 12c new features in great depth, given that he was closely involved with the Beta testing program. Mark shared his opinion that the new flow-based design interface is the most critical feature of this 12c release and will bring major productivity gains for developers. He added that interoperability with Oracle Warehouse Builder for easier migration and tighter integration with Oracle GoldenGate are very valuable for customers. Mark also discussed the new release of Oracle BI Applications and how its use of Oracle Data Integrator for data movement and transformations simplifies life for Oracle BI Apps customers.  The complete interview with Mark Rittman is available for you as well.
