Türk Telekom Saves Big and Improves Performance with Real-Time Archiving Solution

Written by:

Serkan KARATAS, Database Division Manager, Türk Telekom

Sandrine Riley, Oracle Data Integration Product Management

Türk Telekom--a leading communication and convergence technology company in Turkey and the country’s most valuable brand for the last four years according to Brand Finance--provides fixed line communications and broadband internet services. The company, which was founded in 1994 by separating from Posta ve Telgraf Teşkilatı, the national post and telegraph directorate of Turkey, owns more than 14.3 million fixed access lines—nearly all fixed access lines in Turkey—and 7 million asymmetric, digital subscriber lines.

Challenges and Goals

Türk Telekom’s challenge came with growth in becoming a leader in their industry. Customer relationship, sales, marketing, and finance departments needed accurate, timely, and well reported data from the organization's core CRM, billing and payment systems. Unfortunately, the overall data latency, movement, and accuracy were not optimal. The reports needed by these departments were critical for business practices around debt tracking and collecting, detecting of revenue leakages, overall churn prevention, as well as revenue assurance controls. In addition, these reports needed to incorporate online real-time data as well as historical data. In response to the challenges it faced, Türk Telekom set out to build a solution where reports would be delivered on time with maximum performance, leveraging all the appropriate data for better data analysis relevant to the critical business processes. Initially, the team tried to serve all the reports from core OLTP systems, quickly realizing they suffered from performance issues. They needed to reduce the amount of data on the OLTP system, and have the ability to report leveraging the historical data, all at the same time. Additionally, unplanned downtime with the systems was becoming an issue, and the need for data archiving became apparent.

Solution and Results

Türk Telekom was familiar with GoldenGate, as they had used it for their real-time data warehouse, as well as for some zero downtime migrations. Pleased with their prior results, they embarked on a new project in using Oracle GoldenGate for online archiving. This may very well be the first implementation of its kind in the market. Oracle GoldenGate is used to replicate the data to the archive database with near real-time latency, with the ability to purge historical data from the core OLTP database without replicating the purge activity to the archive database. Unlike other archiving solutions, the archive database contains not only historical data but also hot data, and, the archiving processes run while the systems are online and in real-time – not with offline scheduled batches.

Development and testing took about six months, and once this solution was implemented, it showed big results, very quickly. Within 1 month’s time of the solution’s go-live, full return on investment was achieved. Türk Telekom has saved approximately 55 million US dollars in revenue during just the first year ! The company has decreased overall churn rate due to debt by 60%, and has drastically increased OLTP performance by 10X. The business now has immediate access to sales, marketing and financial reports – providing the appropriate departments data to better handle debt tracking, and revenue leakages for example. As initially promised, the reports generated combine historical and real-time data as desired for the business.

Türk Telekom also saw many technical improvements based on this solution as well. 65% percent of disk space was saved once the historical data was archived. Storage and back-up costs shrunk by 40%, and maintenance costs of the production database decreased by 50%. Overall, the systems are more flexible and perform better with the use of Oracle GoldenGate.

But that isn’t all. Türk Telekom is not finished using Oracle GoldenGate. Future projects include: archiving large log tables and transaction tables on the OLTP database for Siebel and Oracle SOA Suite applications in use, directing all application reports to the archive database and totally removing the workload on the OLTP database, as well as wanting to use the archive database as the source for GoldenGate replication to configure cascading replication from the archive database. While lots of work is ahead for the team at Türk Telekom – their success and desire for more of it is very motivating!

And the Winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards in Data Integration are…

At OpenWorld, we announced the winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2012. Raymond James and Morrison Supermarkets were selected for the data integration category for their innovative use of Oracle’s data integration products and the great results they have achieved.

In this blog I would like to briefly introduce you to these award winning projects.

Raymond James is a diversified financial services company, which provides financial planning, wealth management, investment banking, and asset management. They are using Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator to feed their operational data store (ODS), which supports application services across the enterprise. A major requirement for their project was low data latency, as key decisions are made based on the data in the ODS. They were able to fulfill this requirement due to the Oracle Data Integrator’s integrated solution with Oracle GoldenGate.

Oracle GoldenGate captures changed data from different systems including Oracle Database, HP NonStop and Microsoft SQL Server into a single data store on SQL Server 2008. Oracle Data Integrator provides data transformations for the ODS. Leveraging ODI’s integration with GoldenGate, Raymond James now sees a 9 second median latency (from source commit to ODS target commit).

The ODS solution delivers high quality, accurate data for consuming applications such as Raymond James’ next generation client and portfolio management systems as well as real-time operational reporting. It enables timely information for making better decisions.

There are more benefits Raymond James achieved with this implementation of Oracle’s data integration solution. The software developers and architects of this solution, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett, have told us during their presentation at OpenWorld that they also reduced application complexity significantly while improving developer productivity through trusted operational services. They were able to utilize CDC to generate alerts for business users, and for applications (for example for cache hydration mechanisms).

One cool innovation example among many in this project is that using ODI's flexible architecture, Tim and Ryan could build 24/7 self-healing processes. And these processes have hardly failed. Integration process fixes the errors itself. Pretty amazing; and a great solution for environments that need such reliability and availability. (You can see Tim and Ryan’s photo with the Innovation Awards trophy above.)

The other winner of this year in the data integration category, Morrison Supermarkets, is the UK’s 4th largest grocery retailer. The company has been migrating all their legacy applications on to a new-world application set based on Oracle and consolidating all BI on to a single Oracle platform. The company recently implemented Oracle Exadata as the data warehouse engine and uses Oracle Business Intelligence EE.

Their goal with deploying GoldenGate and ODI was to provide BI data to the enterprise in a way that it also supports operational decision making requirements from a wide range of Oracle based ERP applications such as E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle Retail Suite. They use GoldenGate’s log-based change data capture capabilities and Oracle Data Integrator to populate the Oracle Retail Data Model. The electronic point of sale (EPOS) integration solution they built processes over 80 million transactions/day at busy periods in near real time (15 mins). It provides valuable insight to Retail and Commercial teams for both intra-day and historical trend analysis.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the right data integration platform can transform the business. Here is another example: The point-of-sale integration enabled the grocery chain to optimize its stock management, leading to another award: Morrisons won the Grocer 33 award in 2012 - beating all other major UK supermarkets in product availability. Congratulations, Morrisons,on another award!

Celebrating the innovation and the success of our customers with Oracle’s data integration products was definitely a highlight of Oracle OpenWorld for me. I look forward to hearing more from Raymond James, Morrisons, and the other customers that presented their data integration projects at OpenWorld, on how they are creating more value for their organizations.

A Customer Case Study: Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata Using Oracle GoldenGate

IT service continuity is a strategic goal for IT organizations, especially when it comes to mission-critical systems. A common interruption to IT services is planned outages such as system migrations, upgrades, consolidation etc. Because they can be planned, IT teams typically schedule them to "off business" hours to minimize impact on end users.

What happens when you don't have long enough "off business hours" and need to upgrade your system to support the business? This issue comes up quite often with customers that have have critical systems with close to 24/7 up-time requirement and they decide to move to a new system such as Oracle Exadata. Exadata is a great fit for mission-critical systems with its extreme performance and reliability. When moving to this new, modern platform majority of companies have to plan carefully for the migration process with a focus on avoiding business interruption and minimizing the risks involved with the migration effort.

IQNavigator, the leading services procurement solution provider, is one of these many customers that needed a robust solution to eliminate downtime and minimize risks when moving to Exadata. The company chose Oracle GoldenGate to migrate to Oracle Exadata without downtime and with minimal risk. I am very happy to announce that next week we will be able to hear their story directly from IQNavigator's CEO of Emerging Markets and CTO, John F. Martin

On December 15th 10am PT we will host a live webcast Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata Using Oracle GoldenGate: A Customer Case Study to share IQNavigator's implementation of GoldenGate for migrating to Exadata. Oracle's VP of Product Management/Development for Data Integration, Alok Pareek, will present about Oracle's real-time data integration offering for Oracle Exadata, as well.

Leaders Discuss at OpenWorld: Achieving Zero Downtime Upgrades and Migrations

OpenWorld brings us another exciting session about a hot topic: system upgrades and migrations. This time it is a panel discussion between industry leaders that undertook pretty large projects with strict requirements for minimizing downtime. Fedex, SiriusXM Radio, and Dell will talk about the best practices they followed in their highly-critical migration projects and how they removed the risk of interrupting business operations leveraging Oracle GoldenGate.

On this blog site and in many of our webcasts we have talked about Oracle GoldenGate’s unique solution for upgrades and migrations. GoldenGate’s real-time, bi-directional, and heterogeneous data replication capabilities enable to switch over to the new system without downtime. It also offers a failback option by keeping the old system in synch after the switchover,  in case the new system experiences a problem. In this session, we will hear from these select customers how they configured GoldenGate for their unique project requirements.

Fedex will talk about how they are moving their data centers, and SiriusXM Radio will talk about how they consolidated data models for subscription management system after the merger. Dell’s discussion will include how they migrated their Active-Active replication environment that used Oracle Streams in the past to Oracle GoldenGate.

Transforming Legacy Databases with Oracle's Complete Data Integration Solution

Unless it is a brand new company or has built a completely new data center, I’d say every company has an outdated legacy database or an aging platform in place. These systems not only create inefficiencies and higher cost in IT operations, but also slow down the business due to reduced agility. They are simply not designed for today’s business and IT environment.

While this is a common challenge for IT organizations, and many want to bring these legacy systems up to date sooner than later, the migration itself deters some organizations, as it does not look like a trivial task. Especially the downtime is a concern when mission-critical business systems are involved.

We have a great success example on overcoming this legacy database transformation challenge and removing the hurdle around downtime. Sabre Holdings will present at OpenWorld about their use of Oracle Data Integration products, particularly Oracle GoldenGate, in migrating to a completely redesigned systems without any downtime.

It is not surprising that Sabre Holdings had to eliminate downtime in such a major project, given that its Global Distribution System for the travel industry is a highly critical system that travelers across the world depend on 24/7/365. What I find very innovative about their implementation is that they ran both the legacy NonStop system with the new Oracle Database 11g with RAC on Linux in parallel to completely eliminate downtime and have a failback option in the migration process.

I strongly recommend attending Sabre Holding’s session at OpenWorld if you have any plans for legacy database migration or database upgrades:

Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata with Oracle GoldenGate

System upgrades, migrations, consolidation and maintenance activities are fact of life in today’s IT environment, as companies strive to achieve higher performance, scalability and flexibility. Those activities typically require a “planned outage" and for systems that support global operations or require 24/7 availability even a planned outage can be disruptive to business.

Currently we see a great demand from customers for consolidating their databases to Oracle Exadata. As they embark on these projects, they also seek a solution to avoid interrupting availability of their business-critical systems, as it can significantly impact revenue, productivity, and customer satisfaction. Oracle GoldenGate’s real-time, heterogeneous data replication capabilities come very handy in these migration and consolidation projects. It synchronizes old environment, for example DB2, SQL Server or an earlier version of Oracle Database, with the new Oracle Exadata system in real time. While the new environment is prepared and tested, Oracle GoldenGate captures every new transaction from the production system and delivers to Oracle Exadata as soon as it is ready. Once the systems are in sync applications and users can be pointed to the Exadata system immediately without any downtime.

One recent customer that chose Oracle GoldenGate for migration to Exadata is e-Dialog. They are part of GSI Commerce Inc., and provide integrated digital marketing solutions to businesses worldwide. When their message volumes for multichannel marketing and campaign analytics services started to increase rapidly they decided to move to Exadata to achieve higher performance. At the same time they had to ensure business continuity during the migration as any outage would impact their customers’ access to their services. They used Oracle GoldenGate to complete the migration in phases over six months. Oracle GoldenGate’s bidirectional replication capabilities allowed e-Dialog to run the legacy system along with Exadata concurrently. I invite you to read more about e-Dialog success story to learn how Oracle GoldenGate enables successful migration to Oracle Exadata.
