Sabre Holdings Case Study Webcast Recap

Last week at Oracle we had a very important event. In addition to the visit by the roaming Gnome, who really enjoyed posing for pictures on our campus, I had the priviledge to host a webcast with guest speaker Amjad Saeed from Sabre Holdings. We focused on Sabre's data integration solution  leveraging Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator for their enterprise travel data warehouse (ETDW).

Amjad, who leads the development effort for Sabre's enterprise data warehouse, presented us how they approached various data integration challenges, such as growing number of sources and data volumes, and what results they were able to achieve. He shared with us how using Oracle's data integration products in heterogeneous environments enabled right-time market insights, reduced complexity, and decreased time to market by 40%. Sabre was also able to standardize development for its global DW development team, achieve real-time view in the execution of the integration processes, and the ability to manage the data warehouse & BI performance on demand. I would like to thank Amjad again very much for taking the time to share their data integration best practices with us on this webcast.

In this webcast my colleague Sandrine Riley and I provided an overview of Oracle Data Integration products' differentiators. We explained architectural strengths that deliver a complete and integrated platform that offers high performance, fast time-to-value, and low cost of ownership.  If you have not had a chance to attend the live event we have the webcast now available on demand via this link for you to watch at your convenience:

Webcast Replay: Sabre Holdings Case Study: Accelerating Innovation using Oracle Data Integration

There were many great questions from our audience. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to respond to all of them. While we are individually following up with the attendees, I also want to post the questions and answer for some of the commonly asked questions here.

Question: How do I learn Oracle Data Integrator or GoldenGate? Is training the only option ?

Answer: We highly recommend training through Oracle University. The courses will cover all the foundational components needed to get up and running with ODI or GoldenGate. Oracle University offers instructor-led and online trainings. You can go to http://education.oracle.com to get a complete listing of the courses available.Additionally – but not in replacement of training – you can get started with a guided ‘getting started’ type tutorial which you can find on our OTN page:  in the ‘Getting Started’ section of the page. Also, there are some helpful ‘Oracle by Example’ exercises/videos which you can find on the same page.

For Oracle GoldenGate, we recommend watching instructional videos on its Youtube channel: Youtube/oraclegoldengate. A good example is here

Last but not least, at Oracle OpenWorld there are opportunities to learn in depth by attending our hands-on-labs, even though it does not compare to/replace taking training.

Question: Compare and contrast Oracle Data Integrator to the Oracle Warehouse Builder ETL process. Is ODI repository-driven and based on creation of "maps" when   creating ETL modules?

Answer: ODI has been built from the ground up to be heterogeneous – so it will excel on both Oracle and non-Oracle platforms.  OWB has been a more Oracle centric product.  ODI mappings are developed with a declarative design based approach, and processes are executed via an agent – who is orchestrating and delegating the workload in a set-based manner to the database.  OWB deploys packages of code on the database and produces more procedural code.   For more details – please read our ODI architecture white paper

Question:  Is the metadata navigator for ODI flexible and comprehensive so that it could be used as a documentation tool for the ETL?

Answer: Oracle Data Integrator's metadata navigator has been renamed – now called ODI Console.  The ODI console is a web-based interface to view in a more picture based manner what is inside of the ODI repository.  It could be used as documentation.  Beyond the ODI console, ODI provides full documentation from the ODI Studio.  For any given process, project, etc.  you are able to right click – and there is an option that says ‘print’ – and this will provide you with a PDF document including the details down to the transformations.  These documents may be a more appropriate method of documentation.  Also – please check out a whitepaper on Managing Metadata with ODI.

Pervasive Access to Any Data

In my previous blog, I shared with you the five key data integration requirements, which can be summarized as: integrating any data from any source, stored on premise or in the cloud, with maximum performance and availability, to achieve 24/7 access to timely and trusted information. Today, I want to focus on the requirement for integrating “any data”.

We all feel the impact of huge growth in the amount of raw data collected on a daily basis. And big data is a popular topic of information technology these days. Highly complex, large volumes of data bring opportunities and challenges to IT and business audiences. The opportunities, as discussed in McKinsey’s report, are vast, and companies are ready to tap into big data to differentiate and innovate in today’s competitive world.

One of the key challenges of big data is managing the unstructured data, which is estimated to be %80 of enterprise data. Structured and unstructured data must coexist and be used in conjunction with each other in order to gain maximum insight. This means, organizations must collect, organize, and analyze data from sensors, conversations, e-commerce websites, social networks, and many other sources.

Big data also changes the perspective into information management. It changes the question from “How do you look at your data?” to “How do you look at the data that is relevant to you?” This shift in perspective has huge implications in terms of information-management best practices and technologies applied. Data integration technologies now need to support unstructured and semi-structured data, in addition to structured transactional data, to be able to support a complete picture of the enterprise that will drive higher efficiencies, productivity and innovation.

Oracle addresses big data requirements with a complete solution.

In addition to Oracle Big Data Appliance for acquiring and organizing big data, Oracle offers Oracle Big Data Connectors that enable an integrated data set for analysis. Big Data Connectors is a software suite that integrates big data across the enterprise. Oracle Data Integrator offers an Application Adapter for Hadoop, which is part of the Big Data Connectors, and allows organizations to build Hadoop metadata within Oracle Data Integrator, load data into Hadoop, transform data within Hadoop, and load data directly into Oracle Database using Oracle Loader for Hadoop. Oracle Data Integrator has the necessary capabilities for integrating structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data to support organizations with transforming any type of data into real value.

If you would like to learn more about how to use Oracle’s data integration offering for your big data initiatives take a look at our resources on Bridging the Big Data Divide with Oracle Data Integration.

Customer Spotlight:Raymond James

Back in October we announced that Raymond James is a winner of 2012 Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards in the Data Integration category. As I mentioned on this site before, Raymond James used Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate in an integrated solution for its operational data store that supports the application services across the enterprise. By using Oracle's real-time data integration solution from heterogeneous systems into a centralized ODS, the team achieved higher application performance, reduced complexity and cost, and up to 50 percent faster time to market.

I had a pleasure meeting the team, Ryan Fornett, Tim Garrod, and Michael Wells, from Raymond James at Oracle OpenWorld 2012. In addition to hearing from them during their presentations, we had a chance to record interviews with Tim and Ryan while at OpenWorld. You can find the links to their videos below:

Yesterday, with their permission we posted a detailed blog on the FMW blog site about their implementation:

Data Integration Customer Spotlight: Raymond James Financial

I highly recommend reading it to see Oracle Data Integration products in action.

Many thanks to Ryan, Tim, and Mike for sharing the details of their innovative solution with us.

And the Winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards in Data Integration are…

At OpenWorld, we announced the winners of Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2012. Raymond James and Morrison Supermarkets were selected for the data integration category for their innovative use of Oracle’s data integration products and the great results they have achieved.

In this blog I would like to briefly introduce you to these award winning projects.

Raymond James is a diversified financial services company, which provides financial planning, wealth management, investment banking, and asset management. They are using Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator to feed their operational data store (ODS), which supports application services across the enterprise. A major requirement for their project was low data latency, as key decisions are made based on the data in the ODS. They were able to fulfill this requirement due to the Oracle Data Integrator’s integrated solution with Oracle GoldenGate.

Oracle GoldenGate captures changed data from different systems including Oracle Database, HP NonStop and Microsoft SQL Server into a single data store on SQL Server 2008. Oracle Data Integrator provides data transformations for the ODS. Leveraging ODI’s integration with GoldenGate, Raymond James now sees a 9 second median latency (from source commit to ODS target commit).

The ODS solution delivers high quality, accurate data for consuming applications such as Raymond James’ next generation client and portfolio management systems as well as real-time operational reporting. It enables timely information for making better decisions.

There are more benefits Raymond James achieved with this implementation of Oracle’s data integration solution. The software developers and architects of this solution, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett, have told us during their presentation at OpenWorld that they also reduced application complexity significantly while improving developer productivity through trusted operational services. They were able to utilize CDC to generate alerts for business users, and for applications (for example for cache hydration mechanisms).

One cool innovation example among many in this project is that using ODI's flexible architecture, Tim and Ryan could build 24/7 self-healing processes. And these processes have hardly failed. Integration process fixes the errors itself. Pretty amazing; and a great solution for environments that need such reliability and availability. (You can see Tim and Ryan’s photo with the Innovation Awards trophy above.)

The other winner of this year in the data integration category, Morrison Supermarkets, is the UK’s 4th largest grocery retailer. The company has been migrating all their legacy applications on to a new-world application set based on Oracle and consolidating all BI on to a single Oracle platform. The company recently implemented Oracle Exadata as the data warehouse engine and uses Oracle Business Intelligence EE.

Their goal with deploying GoldenGate and ODI was to provide BI data to the enterprise in a way that it also supports operational decision making requirements from a wide range of Oracle based ERP applications such as E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle Retail Suite. They use GoldenGate’s log-based change data capture capabilities and Oracle Data Integrator to populate the Oracle Retail Data Model. The electronic point of sale (EPOS) integration solution they built processes over 80 million transactions/day at busy periods in near real time (15 mins). It provides valuable insight to Retail and Commercial teams for both intra-day and historical trend analysis.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the right data integration platform can transform the business. Here is another example: The point-of-sale integration enabled the grocery chain to optimize its stock management, leading to another award: Morrisons won the Grocer 33 award in 2012 - beating all other major UK supermarkets in product availability. Congratulations, Morrisons,on another award!

Celebrating the innovation and the success of our customers with Oracle’s data integration products was definitely a highlight of Oracle OpenWorld for me. I look forward to hearing more from Raymond James, Morrisons, and the other customers that presented their data integration projects at OpenWorld, on how they are creating more value for their organizations.

The most challenging part of blogging about OpenWorld is…

...not knowing where to start. Do I talk about the great presentations from our partners and executives in our keynote sessions; do I write about the music festival, or many great sessions we had in the Data integration track? A short blog can never do justice. For now I will stick to our data integration sessions for those who could not attend with so many other sessions running concurrently. And in the coming weeks we will be writing more about what we talked in our sessions and what we learned from our customers and partners.

For today, I will give some of the key highlights from Data Integration sessions that took place on Wednesday and Thursday of last week  On Wednesday, GoldenGate was highlighted in multiple Database and Data Integration sessions. I found particularly the session about Oracle’s own use of GoldenGate for its large E-Business Suite implementation for supply chain management and service contract management very interesting. In 2011, Oracle implemented a new operational reporting system using GoldenGate real-time data replication to an operational data store that leverages data from E-Business Suite. The results are very impressive. Mark Field, VP of Applications Development in the IT organization shared with us that data freshness improved by 2,210X while report run performance improved by 60X. For more information on this implementation and its results please see the white paper: Real-Time Operational Reporting for E-Business Suite via GoldenGate Replication to an Operational Data Store

Other sessions that provided very rich content were: "Best Practices for Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate for Active/Active", "Tuning and Troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate on Oracle Database", "Next-Generation Data Integration on Oracle Exadata" and "Accelerate Oracle Data Integrator with Advanced Features, SOA, Groovy, SDK, and XML". Below is a slide presented by Stephan Haisley in the Tuning and Troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate session. If you missed them during OpenWorld, I highly recommend downloading the slides. We will continue to blog about these topics and related resources.

First Day of Data Integration Track at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

OpenWorld started full speed for us today with a great set of sessions in the Data Integration track. After the exciting keynote session on Oracle Database 12c in the morning; Brad Adelberg, VP of Development for Data Integration products, presented Oracle’s data integration product strategy. His session highlighted the new requirements for data integration to achieve pervasive and continuous access to trusted data. The new requirements and product focus areas presented in this session are:

  • Provide access to any data at any source
  • On premise or on cloud
  • Enable zero downtime operations and maximum performance
  • Leverage real-time data for accurate business insights
  • And ensure high quality data is used across the enterprise

During the session Brad walked over how Oracle’s data integration products, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Enterprise Data Quality, and Oracle Data Service Integrator, deliver on these requirements and how recent product releases build on this strategy.

Soon after Brad’s session we heard from a panel of Oracle GoldenGate customers, St. Jude Medical, Equifax, and Bank of America, how they achieved zero downtime operations using Oracle GoldenGate. The panel presented different use cases of GoldenGate, from Active-Active replication to offloading reporting. Especially St. Jude Medical’s implementation, which involves the alert management system for patients that use their pacemakers, reminded me in some cases downtime of mission-critical systems can be a matter of life or death. It is very comforting to hear that GoldenGate delivers highly-reliable continuous availability for life-saving medical systems.

In the afternoon, Nick Wagner from the Product Management team and I followed the customer panel with the review of Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2’s New Features.  Many questions we received from audience were about GoldenGate’s new Integrated Capture for Oracle Database and the enhanced Conflict Management features, as well as how GoldenGate compares to Oracle Streams. In addition to giving details on GoldenGate’s unique capability to capture changed data with a direct integration to the Oracle DBMS engine, we reminded the audience that enhancements to Oracle GoldenGate will continue, while Streams will be primarily maintained.

Last but not least, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett from Raymond James presented a unified real-time data integration solution using Oracle Data Integrator and GoldenGate for their operational data store (ODS). The ODS supports application services across the enterprise and providing timely data is a critical requirement. In this solution, Oracle GoldenGate does the log-based change data capture for Oracle Data Integrator’s near real-time data integration between heterogeneous systems. As Raymond James’ ODS supports mission-critical services for their advisors, the project team had to set up this integration environment to be highly available. During the session, Ryan and Tim explained how they use ODI to enable automated process execution and “always-on” integration processes. Their presentation included 2 demonstrations that focused on CDC patterns deployed with ODI and the automated multi-instance execution and monitoring. We are very grateful to Tim and Ryan for their very-well prepared presentation at OpenWorld this year.

Day 2 (Tuesday) will be also a busy day in our track. In addition to the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards ceremony at 11:45am at Moscone West 3001, we have the following DI sessions

Data-Driven SOA with Oracle Data Integrator

By Mike Eisterer,

Data integration is more than simply moving data in bulk or in real-time, it is also about unifying information for improved business agility and integrating it in today’s service-oriented architectures. SOA enables organizations to easily define services which may then be discovered and leveraged by varying consumers. These consumers may be applications, customer facing portals, or complex business rules which are assembling services to automate process. Data as a foundational service provider is a key component of today’s successful SOA implementations.

Tackling Big Data Analytics with Oracle Data Integrator

 By Mike Eisterer

The term big data draws a lot of attention, but behind the hype there's a simple story. For decades, companies have been making business decisions based on transactional data stored in relational databases. Beyond that critical data, however, is a potential treasure trove of less structured data: weblogs, social media, email, sensors, and documents that can be mined for useful information.

Companies are facing emerging technologies, increasing data volumes, numerous data varieties and the processing power needed to efficiently analyze data which changes with high velocity.

Oracle offers the broadest and most integrated portfolio of products to help you acquire and organize these diverse data sources and analyze them alongside your existing data to find new insights and capitalize on hidden relationships

Oracle Data Integrator Enterprise Edition(ODI) is critical to any enterprise big data strategy. ODI and the Oracle Data Connectors provide native access to Hadoop, leveraging such technologies as MapReduce, HDFS and Hive. Alongside with ODI’s metadata driven approach for extracting, loading and transforming data; companies may now integrate their existing data with big data technologies and deliver timely and trusted data to their analytic and decision support platforms. In this session, you’ll learn about ODI and Oracle Big Data Connectors and how, coupled together, they provide the critical integration with multiple big data platforms.
