In the last post we discussed how Fusion Application uses ODI to transform and move data from their interface tables to the internal tables. In this article we will look into the use case of how Fusion Application uses ODI for extracting data from legacy applications and loading into Interface tables.
Fusion Applications have created a large number of ODI interfaces and packages for addressing this use case. These ODI artifacts are shipped to Fusion Application customers for performing the initial and incremental data migration from their legacy applications to Fusion Applications interface tables. These shipped artifacts can be customized as per the customizations in the customer’s environment. The below diagram depicts the data migration from Siebel to Fusion Customer Relationship Management (CRM). The whole process is performed in two stages. First the data is extracted from the underlying database of Siebel’s production system into staging area on Oracle database and then migrated into Fusion Applications interface tables. ODI is used for both of these operations. Once the initial migration is done then the trickle of change data is replicated and transformed through ODI and Golden gate combination.
Incremental Migration using ODI and Golden Gate
The initial is the bulk data movement process where the snapshot of the data from legacy application is moved into staging area in Oracle database. Depending upon the underlying database type of the legacy application, appropriate ODI Knowledge Module is used in the interfaces to get the best performance. For instance, for the Oracle to Oracle data movement the Knowledge Modules with DBLINK is used to move data natively through DBLINK.
The replication process takes care of moving data incrementally after the Initial load is complete. Oracle Golden Gate is leveraged for this incremental change data replication which continuously replicates the changes into the staging area. The trickle of change data is then moved from staging area to Fusion Applications interface tables through ODI’s change data capture processes using ODI Journalizing Knowledge Modules.

Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is the bulk data transformation platform for Fusion Applications (FA). ODI is used by Fusion Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Fusion Human Capital Management (HCM), Fusion Supply Chain Management (SCM), Fusion Incentive Compensation (IC) and Fusion Financials family products and many other Fusion Application teams are following suit. Among all these product families CRM is the biggest consumer of ODI leveraging a breadth of ODI features and functionality, out of which some features were developed specifically for Fusion Applications use. Some ODI features they utilize include: ODI SDK, high availability, external authentication, various out of the box and customized Knowledge Modules, ODI-ESS bridge, callbacks to ESS EJBs, auditing, open tools, etc. In this post we will first talk about the different Fusion Application use cases at higher level and then take a closer look at different integration points.
Figure 1 shows data integration need of a typical on-premise Fusion Applications deployment.
- Bulk Import: Fusion Applications exposes a set of interface tables as the entry point for data load from any outside source. The bulk import process validates this data and loads it in the internal table which can then be used by the fusion application.
- Data Migration: Extracting data from external applications, legacy applications or any other data source and loading it into Fusion Application’s interface table. ODI can be used for such data load.
- Preparing Data Files: Converting data into Comma Separated Values (CSV) files that can be imported through Fusion Application’s files import wizard. ODI can be used to extract data into such CSV file.

Figure 2 shows the on-demand or cloud environment requirements, which are slightly different as there is no direct connectivity available to the interface tables.
- Bulk Import: Fusion Application exposes a set of interface tables as the entry point for any data load from any outside source. The bulk import process validates this data and then loads it in the internal table which can then be used by the application.
- Preparing Data Files: Converting data into CSV files that can be imported through Fusion Application’s files import wizard. ODI can be used for creation on such CSV files.
- Uploading data files: The data files are uploaded to the Tenant File repository through either Fusion Application’s File import page or Oracle WebCenter Content Document Transfer Utility. The WebCenter Utility is built using ODI open tool framework allowing orchestrating entire process through ODI package.
- Loading Interface Table: Data files to be loaded in the interface tables so that it can be consumed by the Bulk Import process. ODI is used for loading these interface tables.

To help you make the most of Oracle Data Integrator, and to deliver a superior ownership experience in an effort to minimize systems management costs, Oracle recently released Oracle Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator. This new product leverages Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control's advanced management capabilities to provide an integrated and top-down solution for your Oracle Data Integrator environments. Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator supports both 11g (22.214.171.124.0 and higher) and 12c versions of Oracle Data Integrator.
Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator provides a consolidated view of your entire Oracle Data Integrator infrastructure. This enables users to monitor and manage all their components centrally from Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control.
Performance Monitoring and Management
Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator streamlines the monitoring of the health, performance, and availability of each and all components of an Oracle Data Integrator environment – this includes Master and Work Repositories, Standalone and JEE agents, as well as source and target Data Servers.

Through an easy-to-use graphical interface, administrators and operators are able to quickly asses the status of their Oracle Data Integrator environments. The Dashboard page provides a summary of the health of each Oracle Data Integrator components, and clearly highlights potential issues with links for drill-down such that users can easily further investigate and assess more details.

The Repositories page clearly offers key database statistics and performance metrics, where users can easily track the growth of the repository tablespace and purge the Oracle Data Integrator logs when needed – one of Oracle Data Integrator’s best practices!

The Load plan Executions/Sessions page allows developers and operators to view the entire Oracle Data Integrator Sessions activities and review detailed execution statistics; such as the overall duration of processes, or the number of inserts, updates, deletes performed. Users can click to access database details on Oracle, or to view a relevant entire SQL statement generated by Oracle Data Integrator.

The Agents Page provides the list of Oracle Data Integrator Agents and the ability to drill down into each one. Recently triggered alerts or warnings can also be viewed. Overall metrics for agent performance, with quick links to session details are provided.
To ensure that the configurations of all critical Oracle Data Integrator components in production environments are consistent with staging or test environments, Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator provides Configuration Snapshots to save working configurations into the Management Repository or into an external XML file. These snapshots can then be compared with the active configuration in staging or test environments, or against any historical snapshot. Configuration Comparison is the next logical step which thus allows you to ensure the consistency of configurations in your application environment. Going one step further, Configuration History keeps track of all configuration changes, which can help in diagnosing performance problems that may be related to configuration changes along the way.
Service Level Management
Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator allows for a proactive method to monitor Oracle Data Integrator environments at all levels. Many out of the box metrics are automatically collected for each Oracle Data Integrator component (repositories, agents, sources, targets…) which then provides users the ability to set up alerts based on critical or warning thresholds. Notifications can be provided to users in various ways through emails or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) options.
Historical Analysis and Reporting
While real-time metrics certainly come in handy, there is also something to be said for historical collection of data! Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator stores collected metrics and configurations data in a central repository –allowing users to thus analyze the metrics in various incremental views that include; last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 31 days. In addition, customizable service and system dashboard functionality allows users to create reports on various services and systems for service level availability, usage, performance, and business indicators – all in an effort to facilitate strategic trend analysis and reporting.
In a nutshell, Oracle Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator benefits include: reducing the costs associated with monitoring the overall Oracle Data Integrator infrastructure and providing visibility into complex Oracle Data Integrator deployments across the enterprise, minimizing troubleshooting and performance tuning efforts as well as improving the overall ability to efficiently monitor Service Level Agreement compliance using powerful alerting capabilities.
Oracle Management Pack for Oracle Data Integrator is a new Management Pack, licensed separately. From an installation perspective it is packaged in the Fusion Middleware plug-ins for Enterprise Manager (version 126.96.36.199 and higher) and comes with the base Enterprise Manager 12c download. There is no separate installation file to download.

On-Demand Video Webcast: Introducing 12c for Oracle Data Integration
In previous blogs we have talked about the new features of Oracle GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c, so I am not going to repeat them here. But worth repeating are what our customers and partners say about the new 12c release.
SolarWorld’s Senior Database Administrator, Russ Toyama was in the studio with our executives for the launch webcast, and Russ discussed their GoldenGate implementation for SolarWorld's manufacturing process. SolarWorld is the largest U.S. solar panel manufacturer for more than 35 years and needed operational intelligence to continuously improve the quality of its products, while ensuring the systems operate with high performance and stability.
SolarWorld uses GoldenGate to move data from multiple manufacturing databases into a single decision support system database in real time, freeing up the OLTP systems for transaction processing, which improves their performance and stability. The DSS database is very flexible in meeting reporting needs, and provides a comprehensive view of multiple manufacturing processes. This provides the traditional roles of reporting and engineering analysis to continuously improve product quality, yield and efficiency, and enables real time monitoring of the production manufacturing process. Using this real-time monitoring capability SolarWorld is able to detect the deviations from the norm right away, and take action to remedy or understand the situation. This not only improves production quality, but also improves cost management. The manufacturing process is a series of steps building upon the previous, so if there is an issue, it needs to be corrected as soon as possible to prevent waste and reduce manufacturing costs.For GoldenGate 12c we heard from Surren Partabh, CTO for Technology Services for BT. Surren explained the role of Oracle GoldenGate for their private cloud initiative and how they have improved customer experience and availability, while managing costs as well. Surren highlighted that Oracle's data integration product family is one of the cornerstones for BT"s cloud migration project and enable to migrate to cloud simply, and in an agile manner. BT used GoldenGate to build a replication hub to help with the migration from legacy systems to the cloud with a reliable fallback strategy. Surren also commented on the tight integration between GoldenGate 12c and Oracle Data Integrator 12c, saying that it is a "step in the right direction" as it simplifies the actual installation, configuration, management, and monitoring of solutions. In the launch webcast we also heard from Mark Rittman, CTO of Rittman Mead Consulting. Mark talked about the Oracle Data Integrator 12c new features in great depth, given that he was closely involved with the Beta testing program. Mark shared his opinion that the new flow-based design interface is the most critical feature of this 12c release and will bring major productivity gains for developers. He added that interoperability with Oracle Warehouse Builder for easier migration and tighter integration with Oracle GoldenGate are very valuable for customers. Mark also discussed the new release of Oracle BI Applications and how its use of Oracle Data Integrator for data movement and transformations simplifies life for Oracle BI Apps customers.
