Maximum Availability with Oracle GoldenGate

Oracle Database offers a variety of built-in and optional products for maximum availability, and it is well known for its robust high availability and disaster recovery solutions. With its heterogeneous, real-time, transactional data movement capabilities, Oracle GoldenGate is a key part of the Maximum Availability Architecture for Oracle Database.

This week on Thursday Dec. 13th we will be presenting in a live webcast how Oracle GoldenGate fits into Oracle Database Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA). Joe Meeks from the Oracle Database High Availability team will discuss how Oracle GoldenGate complements other key products within MAA such as Active Data Guard. Nick Wagner from GoldenGate PM team will present how to upgrade to latest Oracle Database release without any downtime. Nick will also cover 2 new features of  Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2:  Integrated Capture for Oracle Database and Automated Conflict Detection and Resolution. Nick will provide in depth review of these new features with examples.

Oracle GoldenGate also offers maximum availability for non-Oracle databases, such as HP NonStop, SQL Server, DB2 (LUW, iSeries, or zSeries) and more. The same robust, reliable real-time, bidirectional data movement capabilities apply to all supported databases.

I'd like to invite you to join us on Thursday Dec. 13th 10am PT/1pm ET to hear from the product experts on how to use GoldenGate for maximizing database availability and to ask your questions. You can find the registration link below.

Ameristar Wins with Oracle GoldenGate’s Heterogeneous Real-Time Data Integration

Today we announced a press release about another successful project with Oracle GoldenGate. This time at Ameristar. Ameristar is a casino gaming company and needed a single data integration solution to connect multiple heterogeneous systems to its Teradata data warehouse.

The project involves integration of Ameristar’s promotional and gaming data from 14 data sources across its 7 casino hotel properties in real time into a central Teradata data warehouse. The source systems include the Aristocrat gaming and MGT promotional management platforms running on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 databases.

As you can notice, there was no Oracle Database involved in this project, but Ameristar’s IT leadership knew that  GoldenGate’s strong heterogeneous and real-time data integration capabilities is the right technology for their data warehousing project. With GoldenGate Ameristar was able to reduce data latency to the enterprise data warehouse, and use this real-time customer information for marketing teams in improving overall customer experience. Ameristar customers receive more targeted and timely campaign offers, and the company has more up-to-date visibility into financial metrics of the company.

One other key benefit the company experienced with GoldenGate is in operational costs. The previous data capture solution Ameristar used was trigger based and required a lot of effort to manage. They needed dedicated IT staff to maintain it. With GoldenGate, the solution runs seamlessly without needing a fully-dedicated staff, giving the IT team at Ameristar more resources for their other IT projects.

If you want to learn more about GoldenGate and the latest features for Oracle Database and non-Oracle databases, please watch our on demand webcast about Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2.

Sabre Manages Fast Data Growth with Oracle Data Integration Products

Last year at OpenWorld we announced Sabre Holding as a winner of the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards. The Sabre team did an excellent job at leveraging cutting edge technologies for managing rapid data growth and exponential scalability demands they have experienced in the travel industry.

Today we announced the details and specific benefits of Sabre’s new real-time data integration solution in a press release. Please take a look if you haven’t seen it yet. Sabre Holdings Deploys Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate to Support Rapid Customer Growth

There are 3 different areas of benefits Sabre achieved by using Oracle Data Integration products:

  • Manages 7X increase in data sources for the enterprise data warehouse
  • Reduced infrastructure complexity
  • Decreased time to market for new products and services by 30 percent.

This simply shows that using latest technologies helps the companies to innovate robust solutions against today’s key data management challenges. And the benefit of using a next generation data integration technology is not only seen in the IT operations, but also in the business side. A better data integration solution for the enterprise data warehouse delivered the platform they need to accelerate how they service their customers, improving their competitive advantage.

Tomorrow I will give another great example of innovation with next generation data integration from Oracle. We will be discussing the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2012 winners and their results with using Oracle’s data integration products.

The most challenging part of blogging about OpenWorld is…

...not knowing where to start. Do I talk about the great presentations from our partners and executives in our keynote sessions; do I write about the music festival, or many great sessions we had in the Data integration track? A short blog can never do justice. For now I will stick to our data integration sessions for those who could not attend with so many other sessions running concurrently. And in the coming weeks we will be writing more about what we talked in our sessions and what we learned from our customers and partners.

For today, I will give some of the key highlights from Data Integration sessions that took place on Wednesday and Thursday of last week  On Wednesday, GoldenGate was highlighted in multiple Database and Data Integration sessions. I found particularly the session about Oracle’s own use of GoldenGate for its large E-Business Suite implementation for supply chain management and service contract management very interesting. In 2011, Oracle implemented a new operational reporting system using GoldenGate real-time data replication to an operational data store that leverages data from E-Business Suite. The results are very impressive. Mark Field, VP of Applications Development in the IT organization shared with us that data freshness improved by 2,210X while report run performance improved by 60X. For more information on this implementation and its results please see the white paper: Real-Time Operational Reporting for E-Business Suite via GoldenGate Replication to an Operational Data Store

Other sessions that provided very rich content were: "Best Practices for Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate for Active/Active", "Tuning and Troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate on Oracle Database", "Next-Generation Data Integration on Oracle Exadata" and "Accelerate Oracle Data Integrator with Advanced Features, SOA, Groovy, SDK, and XML". Below is a slide presented by Stephan Haisley in the Tuning and Troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate session. If you missed them during OpenWorld, I highly recommend downloading the slides. We will continue to blog about these topics and related resources.

Oracle OpenWorld Highlights

We are in the final days of Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and the data integration team have been hard at work giving sessions, meeting customers, demonstrating product and conducting hands-on labs.    It has been a great conference, but the best part is meeting our customers and learning about all the great implementations of our products.

Wednesday was the last day that the exhibition hall was open and attendees were getting in their final opportunities to see our products and meet with the product management team.   Two hours before the close of the hall, people lined up to learn about GoldenGate 11gR2, Monitor, Adapters, Veridata, and all the different use cases.    Here's a picture of Sjaak Vossepoel, who is our DIS Sales Consulting Manager for EMEA speaking to a potential customer on the options of using Oracle GoldenGate for heterogenous data replication.

Over the last two days, the GoldenGate team ran two labs; Introduction to Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and Deep Dive into Oracle GoldenGate.   Both of the labs were completely booked out and unfortunately we had to turn away people.   BUT,  all of our labs were recorded recently so if you were not able to get into the lab or did not have enough time to complete your labs, visit youtube.com/oraclegoldengate to see a  complete recording of the labs we used at OpenWorld plus more.

Here are a couple pictures from the Deep Dive into Oracle GoldenGate lead by Chis Lawless from the Product Management team.

Thanks to the GoldenGate Hands-on Lab team for putting on a great session!!!

We will post more information about where you can find additional details on OpenWorld as they become public.

First Day of Data Integration Track at Oracle OpenWorld 2012

OpenWorld started full speed for us today with a great set of sessions in the Data Integration track. After the exciting keynote session on Oracle Database 12c in the morning; Brad Adelberg, VP of Development for Data Integration products, presented Oracle’s data integration product strategy. His session highlighted the new requirements for data integration to achieve pervasive and continuous access to trusted data. The new requirements and product focus areas presented in this session are:

  • Provide access to any data at any source
  • On premise or on cloud
  • Enable zero downtime operations and maximum performance
  • Leverage real-time data for accurate business insights
  • And ensure high quality data is used across the enterprise

During the session Brad walked over how Oracle’s data integration products, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Enterprise Data Quality, and Oracle Data Service Integrator, deliver on these requirements and how recent product releases build on this strategy.

Soon after Brad’s session we heard from a panel of Oracle GoldenGate customers, St. Jude Medical, Equifax, and Bank of America, how they achieved zero downtime operations using Oracle GoldenGate. The panel presented different use cases of GoldenGate, from Active-Active replication to offloading reporting. Especially St. Jude Medical’s implementation, which involves the alert management system for patients that use their pacemakers, reminded me in some cases downtime of mission-critical systems can be a matter of life or death. It is very comforting to hear that GoldenGate delivers highly-reliable continuous availability for life-saving medical systems.

In the afternoon, Nick Wagner from the Product Management team and I followed the customer panel with the review of Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2’s New Features.  Many questions we received from audience were about GoldenGate’s new Integrated Capture for Oracle Database and the enhanced Conflict Management features, as well as how GoldenGate compares to Oracle Streams. In addition to giving details on GoldenGate’s unique capability to capture changed data with a direct integration to the Oracle DBMS engine, we reminded the audience that enhancements to Oracle GoldenGate will continue, while Streams will be primarily maintained.

Last but not least, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett from Raymond James presented a unified real-time data integration solution using Oracle Data Integrator and GoldenGate for their operational data store (ODS). The ODS supports application services across the enterprise and providing timely data is a critical requirement. In this solution, Oracle GoldenGate does the log-based change data capture for Oracle Data Integrator’s near real-time data integration between heterogeneous systems. As Raymond James’ ODS supports mission-critical services for their advisors, the project team had to set up this integration environment to be highly available. During the session, Ryan and Tim explained how they use ODI to enable automated process execution and “always-on” integration processes. Their presentation included 2 demonstrations that focused on CDC patterns deployed with ODI and the automated multi-instance execution and monitoring. We are very grateful to Tim and Ryan for their very-well prepared presentation at OpenWorld this year.

Day 2 (Tuesday) will be also a busy day in our track. In addition to the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards ceremony at 11:45am at Moscone West 3001, we have the following DI sessions

  • Real-World Operational Reporting Customer Panel 11:45am Moscone West- 3005
  • Oracle Data Integrator Product Update and Future Strategy 1:15pm Moscone West- 3005
  • High-volume OLTP with Oracle GoldenGate: Best Practices from Comcast 1:15pm Moscone West- 3005

Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 Launch Webcast Replay Available

For those of you who missed Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 launch webcasts last week, the replay is now available from the following url.

Harnessing the Power of the New Release of Oracle GoldenGate 11g

I would highly recommend watching the webcast to meet many new features of the new release and hear the product management team respond to the questions from the audience in a nice long Q&A section.

In my blog last week I listed the media coverage for this new release. There is a new article published by ITJungle talking about Oracle GoldenGate’s heterogeneity and support for DB2 for iSeries: Oracle Completes DB2/400 Support in Data Replication Tool

As mentioned in last week’s blog, we received over 150 questions from the audience and in this blog I'd like to continue to post some of the frequently asked,  questions and their answers:

Question: What are the fundamental differences between classic data capture and integrated data capture? Do both use the redo logs in the source database?

Answer: Yes, they both use redo logs. Classic capture parses the redo log data directly, whereas the Integrated Capture lets the Oracle database parse the redo log record using an internal API.

Question: Does GoldenGate version need to match Oracle Database version?

Answer: No, they are not directly linked. Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 supports Oracle Database version 10gR2 as well. For Oracle Database version 10gR1 and Oracle Database version 9i you will need GoldenGate11g Release 1 or lower. And for Oracle Database 8i you need Oracle GoldenGate 10 or earlier versions.

Question: If I already use Data Guard, do I need GoldenGate?

Answer: Data Guard is designed as the best disaster recovery solution for Oracle Database. If you would like to implement a bidirectional Active-Active replication solution or need to move data between heterogeneous systems, you will need GoldenGate.

Question: On Compression and GoldenGate, if the source uses compression, is it required that the target also use compression?

Answer: No, the source and target do not need to have the same compression settings.

Question: Does GG support Advance Security Option on the Source database?

Answer: Yes it does.

Question: Can I use GoldenGate to upgrade the Oracle Database to 11g and do OS migration at the same time?

Answer: Yes, this is a very common project where GoldenGate can eliminate downtime, give flexibility to test the target as needed, and minimize risks with fail-back option to the old environment. For more information on database upgrades please check out the following white papers:

Best Practices for Migrating/Upgrading Oracle Database Using Oracle GoldenGate 11g

Zero-Downtime Database Upgrades Using Oracle GoldenGate

Question: Does GoldenGate create any trigger in the source database table level or row level to for real-time data integration?

Answer: No, GoldenGate does not create triggers.

Question: Can transformation be done after insert to destination table or need to be done before?

Answer: It can happen in the Capture (Extract) process, in the  Delivery (Replicat) process, or in the target database.

Thank You for a Great Welcome for Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2

Yesterday morning we had two launch webcasts for Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2. I had the pleasure to present, as well as moderate the Q&A panels in both of these webcasts. Both events had hundreds of live attendees, sending us over 150 questions. Even though we left 30 minutes for Q&A, it was not nearly enough time to address for all the insightful questions our audience sent. Our product management team and I really appreciate the interaction we had yesterday and we are starting to respond back with outstanding questions today.

Oracle GoldenGate’s new release launch also had great welcome from the media. You can find the links for various articles on the new release below:

In this blog, I want to address some of the frequently asked questions that came up during the webcasts. You can find the top questions and their answers along with related resources below. We will continue to address frequently asked questions via future blogs.

Q: Will the new Integrated Capture for Oracle Database replace the Classic Capture? If not, which one do I use when?

A: No, Classic Capture will be around for long time. Core platform specific features, bug fixes, and patches will be available for both Capture processes.Oracle Database specific features will be only available in the Integrated Capture. The Integrated Capture for Oracle Database is an option for users that need to capture data from compressed tables or need support for XML data types, XA on RAC. Users who don’t leverage these features should continue to use our Classic Capture.

For more information on Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 I recommend to check out the White paper: Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 New Features as well as other technical white papers we have on OTN.

For those of you coming to OpenWorld, please attend the related session:

Extracting Data in Oracle GoldenGate Integrated Capture Mode, Monday Oct 1st 1:45pm Moscone South – 102

to learn more about this new feature.

Q: What is new in Conflict Detection and Resolution? And how does it work?

A: There are now pre-built functions to identify the conditions under which an error occurs and how to handle the record when the condition occurs. Error conditions handled include inserts into a target table where the row already exists, updates or deletes to target table rows that exist, but the original source data (before columns) do not match the existing data in the target row, and updates or deletes where the row does not exist in the target database table. For
each of these conditions a method to handle the error is specified.

Please check out our recent blog on this topic and the White paper: Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 New Features white paper.

Also, for those attending OpenWorld please attend the session:

Q: Does Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and the Management Pack require additional licenses, or is it incorporated with the GoldenGate license?

A: Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and Oracle Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate are additional products and require separate licenses. Please check out Oracle's price list here.

Q: Does GoldenGate - Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in require additional license?

A: Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in is included in the Oracle Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate license, which is separate from Oracle GoldenGate license. There is no separate license for the Enterprise Manager Plug-in by itself. Oracle GoldenGate Monitor, Oracle GoldenGate Director, and Enterprise Manager Plug-in are included in the Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate license. Please check out Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate data sheet for more info on this product bundle.

Q: Is Oracle GoldenGate replacing Oracle Streams product?

A: Oracle GoldenGate is the strategic data replication product. Therefore, Oracle Streams will continue to be supported, but will not be actively enhanced. Rather, the best elements of Oracle Streams will be added to Oracle GoldenGate. Conflict management is one of them and with the latest release Oracle GoldenGate has a more advanced conflict management offering. Current customers depending on Oracle Streams will continue to be fully supported.

Q: How is Oracle GoldenGate different than Oracle Data Integrator?

A: Oracle Data Integrator is designed for fast bulk data movement and transformation between heterogeneous systems, while GoldenGate is designed for real-time movement of transactions between heterogeneous systems. These two products are completely complementary where GoldenGate provides low-impact real-time change data capture and delivery to a staging area on the target. And Oracle Data Integrator transforms this data and loads the DW tables. In fact, Oracle Data Integrator integrates with GoldenGate to use GoldenGate’s Capture process as one option for its CDC mechanism. We have several customers that deployed GoldenGate and ODI together to feed real-time data to their data warehousing solutions. Please also check out Oracle Data Integrator Changed Data Capture with Oracle GoldenGate Data Sheet (PDF).

Thank you again very much for welcoming Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 and stay in touch with us for more exciting news, updates, and events.

Eliminating Batch Windows Using Real-Time Data Integration

When we invest in technology solutions we expect improvement in productivity, agility, performance and more. We don’t want to be limited by the technology we select. While data warehouses are designed to give us the freedom to access complete and reliable information, the underlying data integration architecture and the type of solution used can lead to significant constraints on how we manage our critical production systems.

With data warehousing solutions, one of the most common constraints is the time window available for batch extract processing on the source systems. The resource intensive extract process typically has to be done in off-business hours and restricts access to critical source systems.

A low-impact, real-time data integration solution can liberate your systems from batch windows. When the extract component uses a non-intrusive method, such as reading database transaction logs to capture only the changed data, it does not burden source systems. Hence, data extract can happen at any time of the day, and throughout the day, while all users are online.

SunGard is a great example for achieving a major transformation in data warehousing solutions by using log-based real-time data integration. The company removed batch processing timeline related constraint by using Oracle GoldenGate to capture all of the intraday changes that take place on the selected tables. As a result they reduced the nightly extract process from the Oracle E-Business Suite application by 9 hours. In addition, Oracle GoldenGate enables to feed EBusiness Suite data to the Oracle BI Application for Finance throughout the day. Hence, end users have access to up-to-date information on the Oracle Business Intelligence dashboards as changes occur.

To read more about how real-time data integration can free your critical systems from batch window constraints and how SunGard leveraged Oracle GoldenGate in their data warehousing implementation, I invite you to check out the SunGard case study and the article “Freedom from Batch Windows Using Real-Time Data Integration we wrote for TDWI's What Works in Emerging Technologies publication. As always, you can find more resources on Oracle GoldenGate on our recently redesigned website.
