When The Roaming Gnome Conquers Data Integration

It is always fascinating to see how our customers turn Oracle Data Integration products into a major force for their critical initiatives. I particularly like the success stories that tie back to the products or services that I use in my personal life. A little gnome that travels around the world is my new hero when it comes to seeing Oracle Data Integration in action, in day-to-day life.  Well, of course, I am referring to the Travelocity Gnome that we are familiar with from TV ads. And we know that behind this little gnome, is a great innovative IT team serving Sabre Holdings, which owns Travelocity. They deserve the praise for supporting business innovation with cutting edge data warehousing/BI solutions.

Enterprise Data Quality: A Key Requirement for Data Integration and Beyond...

If you've been following the recent Oracle Data Integration blogs, then you're no stranger to our latest paper on the five key data integration requirements. Yet, what we haven't mentioned yet is the importance of data quality.  Enterprise data is changing constantly, take a look at the graphic below and you will see what I  mean.  Data degrades at a rapid fire pace and an enterprise-level data quality solution is key to maintaining the trustworthiness as well as reliability in order to make sound business decisions from it.

As a key component of Oracle Data Integration product family, Oracle Enterprise Data Quality complements Oracle's integration technologies by providing the key steps around cleansing, standardizing, governing and matching information.  In addition, Enterprise Data Quality works with Oracle Master Data Management to help ensure that information inserted into multi-domain hubs is relevant, analyzed and accurate.  One of the key features of Enterprise Data Quality is its on-going governance capabilties, bolstered by case management and dashboards for auditing, profiling, and parsing information - across customer and product data.  The benefits of these features are that users have access to analyze data quality trends over time, continuous monitoring (user established) and rapid discovery of data faults.  Oracle Enterprise Data Quality provides a manageable footprint in the enterprise for both MDM and data integration initiatives.. It acts as as the perfect starting point for understanding the current state of data.  For more information on Oracle Enterprise Data Quality click here

Pervasive Access to Any Data

In my previous blog, I shared with you the five key data integration requirements, which can be summarized as: integrating any data from any source, stored on premise or in the cloud, with maximum performance and availability, to achieve 24/7 access to timely and trusted information. Today, I want to focus on the requirement for integrating “any data”.

We all feel the impact of huge growth in the amount of raw data collected on a daily basis. And big data is a popular topic of information technology these days. Highly complex, large volumes of data bring opportunities and challenges to IT and business audiences. The opportunities, as discussed in McKinsey’s report, are vast, and companies are ready to tap into big data to differentiate and innovate in today’s competitive world.

One of the key challenges of big data is managing the unstructured data, which is estimated to be %80 of enterprise data. Structured and unstructured data must coexist and be used in conjunction with each other in order to gain maximum insight. This means, organizations must collect, organize, and analyze data from sensors, conversations, e-commerce websites, social networks, and many other sources.

Big data also changes the perspective into information management. It changes the question from “How do you look at your data?” to “How do you look at the data that is relevant to you?” This shift in perspective has huge implications in terms of information-management best practices and technologies applied. Data integration technologies now need to support unstructured and semi-structured data, in addition to structured transactional data, to be able to support a complete picture of the enterprise that will drive higher efficiencies, productivity and innovation.

Oracle addresses big data requirements with a complete solution.

In addition to Oracle Big Data Appliance for acquiring and organizing big data, Oracle offers Oracle Big Data Connectors that enable an integrated data set for analysis. Big Data Connectors is a software suite that integrates big data across the enterprise. Oracle Data Integrator offers an Application Adapter for Hadoop, which is part of the Big Data Connectors, and allows organizations to build Hadoop metadata within Oracle Data Integrator, load data into Hadoop, transform data within Hadoop, and load data directly into Oracle Database using Oracle Loader for Hadoop. Oracle Data Integrator has the necessary capabilities for integrating structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data to support organizations with transforming any type of data into real value.

If you would like to learn more about how to use Oracle’s data integration offering for your big data initiatives take a look at our resources on Bridging the Big Data Divide with Oracle Data Integration.

Sabre Manages Fast Data Growth with Oracle Data Integration Products

Last year at OpenWorld we announced Sabre Holding as a winner of the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards. The Sabre team did an excellent job at leveraging cutting edge technologies for managing rapid data growth and exponential scalability demands they have experienced in the travel industry.

Today we announced the details and specific benefits of Sabre’s new real-time data integration solution in a press release. Please take a look if you haven’t seen it yet. Sabre Holdings Deploys Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle GoldenGate to Support Rapid Customer Growth

There are 3 different areas of benefits Sabre achieved by using Oracle Data Integration products:

  • Manages 7X increase in data sources for the enterprise data warehouse
  • Reduced infrastructure complexity
  • Decreased time to market for new products and services by 30 percent.

This simply shows that using latest technologies helps the companies to innovate robust solutions against today’s key data management challenges. And the benefit of using a next generation data integration technology is not only seen in the IT operations, but also in the business side. A better data integration solution for the enterprise data warehouse delivered the platform they need to accelerate how they service their customers, improving their competitive advantage.

Tomorrow I will give another great example of innovation with next generation data integration from Oracle. We will be discussing the Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards 2012 winners and their results with using Oracle’s data integration products.

Enabling Data Governance with Oracle Enterprise Data Quality

Data Governance is one of those terms in the IT ecosystem with a pretty nebulous definition. It can mean different things to different people and depending on who you ask it's as simple as extra monitoring of your business process with some additional auditing for IT processees.  On the other hand, it can be defined as the point where data quality, data management, data policies, business process management, and risk management converge in terms of the handling of data in an organization.  Data Quality is an important component of Data Governance, for that matter to any type of IT initiative - Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing or Master Data Management, and enables organizations do a better job of governing their data in the following ways:

  • Brings clarify and transparency to data
  • Ensures high data quality for enterprise IT systems that need it
  • Provides data control and standardization

Oracle Enterprise Data Quality is a data quality solution that handles both customer and product data and has unique approaches geared to handling the unique characteristics of each data domain.  In addition, it plays an important role in helping organizations manage data quality as part of data governance projects by ensuring that data of poor data quality is cleansed, standardized and ready to meet compliance mandates, there by making sure that "dirty data" does not cascade throughout the enterprise and infiltrate IT systems.  Join us on a webcast on this very topic - October 27, 2011 at 10 AM PT and learn how Oracle Enterprise Data Quality can help give you the tools you need to drive your Data Governance projects forward to completion.  Register today for this webcast.
