Oracle OpenWorld Update: Oracle GoldenGate for High Availability

One of our primary themes this year for the Oracle OpenWorld Sessions featuring Oracle GoldenGate is High Availability. This is a pretty wide theme, but the focus will be on ways of maximizing uptime for critical systems during planned and unplanned events.

We have a number of very informative sessions dedicated to exploring this theme in detail; from deep product implementation strategies up to lessons learned by our customers when using Oracle GoldenGate to meet strict SLAs.

We kick this track off with our Customer Panel on Zero Downtime Operations on Monday, which I overviewed in my last posting. This is followed by Comcast, who will be hosting a sessions at 1:45PM in Moscone West 3014. Their session will discuss using Oracle GoldenGate to reduce downtime during a database upgrade. Here’s an overview:

CON8571 - Oracle Database Upgrade with Oracle GoldenGate: Best Practices from Comcast

Thank You for a Great Welcome for Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2

Yesterday morning we had two launch webcasts for Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2. I had the pleasure to present, as well as moderate the Q&A panels in both of these webcasts. Both events had hundreds of live attendees, sending us over 150 questions. Even though we left 30 minutes for Q&A, it was not nearly enough time to address for all the insightful questions our audience sent. Our product management team and I really appreciate the interaction we had yesterday and we are starting to respond back with outstanding questions today.

Oracle GoldenGate’s new release launch also had great welcome from the media. You can find the links for various articles on the new release below:

In this blog, I want to address some of the frequently asked questions that came up during the webcasts. You can find the top questions and their answers along with related resources below. We will continue to address frequently asked questions via future blogs.

Q: Will the new Integrated Capture for Oracle Database replace the Classic Capture? If not, which one do I use when?

A: No, Classic Capture will be around for long time. Core platform specific features, bug fixes, and patches will be available for both Capture processes.Oracle Database specific features will be only available in the Integrated Capture. The Integrated Capture for Oracle Database is an option for users that need to capture data from compressed tables or need support for XML data types, XA on RAC. Users who don’t leverage these features should continue to use our Classic Capture.

For more information on Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 I recommend to check out the White paper: Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 New Features as well as other technical white papers we have on OTN.

For those of you coming to OpenWorld, please attend the related session:

Extracting Data in Oracle GoldenGate Integrated Capture Mode, Monday Oct 1st 1:45pm Moscone South – 102

to learn more about this new feature.

Q: What is new in Conflict Detection and Resolution? And how does it work?

A: There are now pre-built functions to identify the conditions under which an error occurs and how to handle the record when the condition occurs. Error conditions handled include inserts into a target table where the row already exists, updates or deletes to target table rows that exist, but the original source data (before columns) do not match the existing data in the target row, and updates or deletes where the row does not exist in the target database table. For
each of these conditions a method to handle the error is specified.

Please check out our recent blog on this topic and the White paper: Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 New Features white paper.

Q: Does Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and the Management Pack require additional licenses, or is it incorporated with the GoldenGate license?

A: Oracle GoldenGate Veridata and Oracle Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate are additional products and require separate licenses. Please check out Oracle's price list here.

Q: Does GoldenGate - Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in require additional license?

A: Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in is included in the Oracle Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate license, which is separate from Oracle GoldenGate license. There is no separate license for the Enterprise Manager Plug-in by itself. Oracle GoldenGate Monitor, Oracle GoldenGate Director, and Enterprise Manager Plug-in are included in the Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate license. Please check out Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate data sheet for more info on this product bundle.

Q: Is Oracle GoldenGate replacing Oracle Streams product?

A: Oracle GoldenGate is the strategic data replication product. Therefore, Oracle Streams will continue to be supported, but will not be actively enhanced. Rather, the best elements of Oracle Streams will be added to Oracle GoldenGate. Conflict management is one of them and with the latest release Oracle GoldenGate has a more advanced conflict management offering. Current customers depending on Oracle Streams will continue to be fully supported.

Q: How is Oracle GoldenGate different than Oracle Data Integrator?

A: Oracle Data Integrator is designed for fast bulk data movement and transformation between heterogeneous systems, while GoldenGate is designed for real-time movement of transactions between heterogeneous systems. These two products are completely complementary where GoldenGate provides low-impact real-time change data capture and delivery to a staging area on the target. And Oracle Data Integrator transforms this data and loads the DW tables. In fact, Oracle Data Integrator integrates with GoldenGate to use GoldenGate’s Capture process as one option for its CDC mechanism. We have several customers that deployed GoldenGate and ODI together to feed real-time data to their data warehousing solutions. Please also check out Oracle Data Integrator Changed Data Capture with Oracle GoldenGate Data Sheet (PDF).

Thank you again very much for welcoming Oracle GoldenGate 11g Release 2 and stay in touch with us for more exciting news, updates, and events.

Eliminating Batch Windows Using Real-Time Data Integration

When we invest in technology solutions we expect improvement in productivity, agility, performance and more. We don’t want to be limited by the technology we select. While data warehouses are designed to give us the freedom to access complete and reliable information, the underlying data integration architecture and the type of solution used can lead to significant constraints on how we manage our critical production systems.

With data warehousing solutions, one of the most common constraints is the time window available for batch extract processing on the source systems. The resource intensive extract process typically has to be done in off-business hours and restricts access to critical source systems.

A low-impact, real-time data integration solution can liberate your systems from batch windows. When the extract component uses a non-intrusive method, such as reading database transaction logs to capture only the changed data, it does not burden source systems. Hence, data extract can happen at any time of the day, and throughout the day, while all users are online.

SunGard is a great example for achieving a major transformation in data warehousing solutions by using log-based real-time data integration. The company removed batch processing timeline related constraint by using Oracle GoldenGate to capture all of the intraday changes that take place on the selected tables. As a result they reduced the nightly extract process from the Oracle E-Business Suite application by 9 hours. In addition, Oracle GoldenGate enables to feed EBusiness Suite data to the Oracle BI Application for Finance throughout the day. Hence, end users have access to up-to-date information on the Oracle Business Intelligence dashboards as changes occur.

To read more about how real-time data integration can free your critical systems from batch window constraints and how SunGard leveraged Oracle GoldenGate in their data warehousing implementation, I invite you to check out the SunGard case study and the article “Freedom from Batch Windows Using Real-Time Data Integration we wrote for TDWI's What Works in Emerging Technologies publication. As always, you can find more resources on Oracle GoldenGate on our recently redesigned website.

Achieving Business Continuity for EMR Environments: UPMC's Case Study

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is revolutionizing the healthcare industry by delivering improved patient care and operational efficiencies. To make sure the initiative lives up to its potential, the move to EMR requires working with a robust IT infrastructure. Particularly, when everything is moved to the digital world, a key requirement for uninterrupted patient care is maintaining high levels of availability for clinical systems that contain patient data.

UPMC is a national leader in adoption of EMRs and empowered its diverse health care network that includes 20 hospitals, 400 doctors’ offices and outpatient sites with clinical applications from Cerner. To enable business continuity for its Cerner appliations, UPMC has implemented a system that uses Oracle GoldenGate and Cerner’s 724Access® software to deliver clinicians continuous and secure access to the most up-to-date patient and order data.

In less than 2 weeks, at OpenWorld we will have the opportunity to hear directly from UPMC how they implemented Oracle GoldenGate for their Cerner applications and what results they have seen so far.

UPMC Case Study: Achieving Business Continuity with Oracle GoldenGate

Tuesday October 4th 10:15 am

Intercontinental Hotel- Telegraph Hill Room

For me personally, GoldenGate’s use for business continuity in a healthcare setting is one of the most exciting, and rewarding discussions. It shows how real-time data integration technology can help improve patient care and prevent service interruptions that can cost lives. It makes me proud to be part of a technology solution that, even though indirectly, helps improve quality of care we receive.

I am truly looking forward to hearing Bill Costantini from UPMC present their project for us at OpenWorld. Hope you can join me in this valuable session.

Moving from Oracle Streams to Oracle GoldenGate at Thomson Reuters

By Volker Kuhr

Acquisition of GoldenGate Software took place 2 years ago around this time and brought many changes to Oracle’s data replication offering. It also raised questions among Oracle Streams users and Oracle replication experts, like myself, considering both products are built on the same idea: reading transaction logs to mine changed data. Oracle’s acquisition of GoldenGate was due to Oracle's focus on bringing best-of-breed technology to its customers. Hence Oracle GoldenGate became the strategic data replication product based on its heterogeneity, flexibility, performance, and ease of use. For many of the existing Streams customers this development brought up the question whether they should move their critical projects using Streams to GoldenGate. Thomson Reuters is one of these customers that evaluated and completed migrating its Active-Active database replication solution from Streams to GoldenGate.

Thomson Reuters will present its evaluation and migration process at OpenWorld:

Active/Active: Moving from Oracle Streams to Oracle GoldenGate at Thomson Reuters

Monday October 3, 2011 3:30 PM PT – 4:30 PM

               Intercontinental Hotel- Sutter Room

In this session you will see that there is a possibility of a silent migration without any impact to the production environment. This is very important for business operations nowadays since the impact of a system outage becomes more and more expensive, and causes accountability issues in management.

A key aspect of the environment at Thomson Reuters is the Active/Active database replication, which will be discussed as well. Conflict detection and resolution is a characteristic that you definitely must be aware of in this type of solution. While this issue is addressed by application design and data ownership, there are certain areas where the technology must cope with this topic. So it will be part of this session as well.

Come join us at this session to hear it straight from the customer why and how Thomson Reuters moved its Active/Active database replication solution to GoldenGate.

Transforming Legacy Databases with Oracle's Complete Data Integration Solution

Unless it is a brand new company or has built a completely new data center, I’d say every company has an outdated legacy database or an aging platform in place. These systems not only create inefficiencies and higher cost in IT operations, but also slow down the business due to reduced agility. They are simply not designed for today’s business and IT environment.

While this is a common challenge for IT organizations, and many want to bring these legacy systems up to date sooner than later, the migration itself deters some organizations, as it does not look like a trivial task. Especially the downtime is a concern when mission-critical business systems are involved.

We have a great success example on overcoming this legacy database transformation challenge and removing the hurdle around downtime. Sabre Holdings will present at OpenWorld about their use of Oracle Data Integration products, particularly Oracle GoldenGate, in migrating to a completely redesigned systems without any downtime.

It is not surprising that Sabre Holdings had to eliminate downtime in such a major project, given that its Global Distribution System for the travel industry is a highly critical system that travelers across the world depend on 24/7/365. What I find very innovative about their implementation is that they ran both the legacy NonStop system with the new Oracle Database 11g with RAC on Linux in parallel to completely eliminate downtime and have a failback option in the migration process.

I strongly recommend attending Sabre Holding’s session at OpenWorld if you have any plans for legacy database migration or database upgrades:

Discover What's Coming Up at OpenWorld on Data Integration

Our world is overloaded with information, unfortunately stored typically in silos that hide the big picture businesses need to move forward. Data Integration technology helps bring the pieces together from disparate systems across the enterprise and see the complete picture to make more informed decisions. That’s why data integration is a key ingredient to be able to find innovative solutions for today’s never-ending business and IT challenges.

For the same reason, one of our key tracks at Oracle OpenWorld is dedicated to Data Integration.   The Data Integration track covers multiple topics, as the technology is tightly integrated with many different areas including data warehousing, system migration/consolidation, data quality, data synchronization for high availability, application integration, Cloud computing, and MDM. The track brings 26 sessions joined by over 20 customers and partners, 12 Demo Pods, and 6 Hands-on-Labs to OpenWorld attendees.

The most exciting part of this year’s Data Integration track is the customers that will present how they leverage Data Integration products including Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Enterprise Data Quality to improve their business and IT operations. Customer speakers—such as Sprint, Sabre Holding, UPMC, Turkcell, Paychex, Fedex, Dell, SiriusXM Radio, Citigroup, ThomsonReuters, Verisign, Ross Stores, and IronMountain—represent multiple industries and will share their innovative data integration solutions.

In a big event like Open World, it is hard to decide on which sessions to attend, planning in advance helps. You can start with reviewing our Focus On report for Data Integration to see the details on where and when you can find our sessions. Also, I invite you to listen to a recent podcast that gives more details on what Data Integration track entails this year at OpenWorld.

We will continue to keep you informed via our Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as via this blog page, with details on what is coming up on Data Integration at OpenWorld. If you are not part of the Oracle Data Integration community yet, it is a good time to join now.

Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata with Oracle GoldenGate

System upgrades, migrations, consolidation and maintenance activities are fact of life in today’s IT environment, as companies strive to achieve higher performance, scalability and flexibility. Those activities typically require a “planned outage" and for systems that support global operations or require 24/7 availability even a planned outage can be disruptive to business.

Currently we see a great demand from customers for consolidating their databases to Oracle Exadata. As they embark on these projects, they also seek a solution to avoid interrupting availability of their business-critical systems, as it can significantly impact revenue, productivity, and customer satisfaction. Oracle GoldenGate’s real-time, heterogeneous data replication capabilities come very handy in these migration and consolidation projects. It synchronizes old environment, for example DB2, SQL Server or an earlier version of Oracle Database, with the new Oracle Exadata system in real time. While the new environment is prepared and tested, Oracle GoldenGate captures every new transaction from the production system and delivers to Oracle Exadata as soon as it is ready. Once the systems are in sync applications and users can be pointed to the Exadata system immediately without any downtime.

One recent customer that chose Oracle GoldenGate for migration to Exadata is e-Dialog. They are part of GSI Commerce Inc., and provide integrated digital marketing solutions to businesses worldwide. When their message volumes for multichannel marketing and campaign analytics services started to increase rapidly they decided to move to Exadata to achieve higher performance. At the same time they had to ensure business continuity during the migration as any outage would impact their customers’ access to their services. They used Oracle GoldenGate to complete the migration in phases over six months. Oracle GoldenGate’s bidirectional replication capabilities allowed e-Dialog to run the legacy system along with Exadata concurrently. I invite you to read more about e-Dialog success story to learn how Oracle GoldenGate enables successful migration to Oracle Exadata.
