Extending the Value of Oracle Applications with Oracle Data Integration

Can you imagine a business operating without any application software? Not anymore. Transactional applications are in the center of business operations in today's digital world. With a wide range of offering, Oracle Applications bring customers the latest technology and make IT a strategic differentiator for their business. These applications’ data is also a major asset to the organization and critical to the health of the business. There are several ways Oracle's data integration solutions help Oracle Applications customers drive more value out of their application investments.

A key method to maximize return on business applications is to connect their data to gain a unified view. A complete and up-to-date view enables businesses to make better business decisions and meet customers’ needs more efficiently. This is where Oracle Data Integration comes in. By connecting applications at the data-layer, at any latency, Oracle’s data integration products enable Oracle Applications users to find answers that takes their business to the next level. Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) , the flagship product for bulk data movement and transformation, has a long list of Knowledge Modules for Oracle Applications to leverage best practices in loading, transforming, or integrating data for that specific application. Upgrading Oracle Siebel CRM Application Without Downtime

Oracle’s Siebel Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software helps organizations differentiate their businesses to achieve top- and bottom-line growth. Siebel CRM delivers comprehensive solutions that are tailored to more than 20 different industries. As Siebel CRM implementations have evolved into mission critical, operational business processes that must operate 24/7, companies are finding it increasingly difficult to afford the downtime typically required to perform an in-place upgrade. Without these upgrades, businesses loose out on critical new features and functionality.

With Oracle GoldenGate, customers don’t have to choose between upgrades and outages. Oracle GoldenGate allows Siebel CRM customers to perform upgrades with zero downtime. Now Siebel customers can always take advantages of the latest innovations in customer relationship management without having to worry about potential lost revenue due to downtime.

Oracle GoldenGate provides three different deployment models for Siebel CRM zero downtime upgrades that are designed to meet differing customer requirements. These range from a basic unidirectional model, which is designed to work out-of-the-box, to the most sophisticated active-active model for phased migrations.

If you have mission-critical Siebel CRM implementations I recommend that you watch the screencast below to learn how you can begin taking advantage of all the latest Siebel enhancements without having any downtime.

This screencast is also available on Oracle Media Network and Oracle's YouTube channel. For even more details I recommend reading the whitepaper Upgrading Siebel CRM with Zero Downtime .

A Customer Case Study: Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata Using Oracle GoldenGate

IT service continuity is a strategic goal for IT organizations, especially when it comes to mission-critical systems. A common interruption to IT services is planned outages such as system migrations, upgrades, consolidation etc. Because they can be planned, IT teams typically schedule them to "off business" hours to minimize impact on end users.

What happens when you don't have long enough "off business hours" and need to upgrade your system to support the business? This issue comes up quite often with customers that have have critical systems with close to 24/7 up-time requirement and they decide to move to a new system such as Oracle Exadata. Exadata is a great fit for mission-critical systems with its extreme performance and reliability. When moving to this new, modern platform majority of companies have to plan carefully for the migration process with a focus on avoiding business interruption and minimizing the risks involved with the migration effort.

IQNavigator, the leading services procurement solution provider, is one of these many customers that needed a robust solution to eliminate downtime and minimize risks when moving to Exadata. The company chose Oracle GoldenGate to migrate to Oracle Exadata without downtime and with minimal risk. I am very happy to announce that next week we will be able to hear their story directly from IQNavigator's CEO of Emerging Markets and CTO, John F. Martin

On December 15th 10am PT we will host a live webcast Zero Downtime Migration to Oracle Exadata Using Oracle GoldenGate: A Customer Case Study to share IQNavigator's implementation of GoldenGate for migrating to Exadata. Oracle's VP of Product Management/Development for Data Integration, Alok Pareek, will present about Oracle's real-time data integration offering for Oracle Exadata, as well.

If you have plans to move to Oracle Exadata or have any other upgrade/migration project for your critical systems, I strongly recommend joining this webcast to learn how you can use GoldenGate for:

  • Real-time data replication between heterogeneous systems to eliminate downtime
  • Active-Active database synchronization for phased migration to minimize risk
  • Real-time data feeds into Oracle Exadata for reporting with timely information
  • Reliable real-time data synchronization for the standby system

Moving from Oracle Streams to Oracle GoldenGate at Thomson Reuters

By Volker Kuhr

Acquisition of GoldenGate Software took place 2 years ago around this time and brought many changes to Oracle’s data replication offering. It also raised questions among Oracle Streams users and Oracle replication experts, like myself, considering both products are built on the same idea: reading transaction logs to mine changed data. Oracle’s acquisition of GoldenGate was due to Oracle's focus on bringing best-of-breed technology to its customers. Hence Oracle GoldenGate became the strategic data replication product based on its heterogeneity, flexibility, performance, and ease of use. For many of the existing Streams customers this development brought up the question whether they should move their critical projects using Streams to GoldenGate. Thomson Reuters is one of these customers that evaluated and completed migrating its Active-Active database replication solution from Streams to GoldenGate.

Thomson Reuters will present its evaluation and migration process at OpenWorld:

Active/Active: Moving from Oracle Streams to Oracle GoldenGate at Thomson Reuters

Monday October 3, 2011 3:30 PM PT – 4:30 PM

               Intercontinental Hotel- Sutter Room

In this session you will see that there is a possibility of a silent migration without any impact to the production environment. This is very important for business operations nowadays since the impact of a system outage becomes more and more expensive, and causes accountability issues in management.

A key aspect of the environment at Thomson Reuters is the Active/Active database replication, which will be discussed as well. Conflict detection and resolution is a characteristic that you definitely must be aware of in this type of solution. While this issue is addressed by application design and data ownership, there are certain areas where the technology must cope with this topic. So it will be part of this session as well.

Come join us at this session to hear it straight from the customer why and how Thomson Reuters moved its Active/Active database replication solution to GoldenGate.

Transforming Legacy Databases with Oracle's Complete Data Integration Solution

Unless it is a brand new company or has built a completely new data center, I’d say every company has an outdated legacy database or an aging platform in place. These systems not only create inefficiencies and higher cost in IT operations, but also slow down the business due to reduced agility. They are simply not designed for today’s business and IT environment.

While this is a common challenge for IT organizations, and many want to bring these legacy systems up to date sooner than later, the migration itself deters some organizations, as it does not look like a trivial task. Especially the downtime is a concern when mission-critical business systems are involved.

We have a great success example on overcoming this legacy database transformation challenge and removing the hurdle around downtime. Sabre Holdings will present at OpenWorld about their use of Oracle Data Integration products, particularly Oracle GoldenGate, in migrating to a completely redesigned systems without any downtime.

It is not surprising that Sabre Holdings had to eliminate downtime in such a major project, given that its Global Distribution System for the travel industry is a highly critical system that travelers across the world depend on 24/7/365. What I find very innovative about their implementation is that they ran both the legacy NonStop system with the new Oracle Database 11g with RAC on Linux in parallel to completely eliminate downtime and have a failback option in the migration process.

I strongly recommend attending Sabre Holding’s session at OpenWorld if you have any plans for legacy database migration or database upgrades:
