There's No Stopping Zero Downtime

With the recent acquisition of Ksplice – an innovative company that offers zero downtime update technology for Linux – Oracle once again quenches its thirst for zero downtime solutions.
Zero downtime has come a long way since its early roots. Today high availability is incorporated as a feature in almost every type of hardware, networking, software solution to the point that it is almost expected that we call any of our solutions: highly available, just like we expect any car we buy to have fuel injection, or air conditioning. [In fact even our cars actually have a bit of HA built into them!]
But Zero Downtime is clearly something much more sophisticated, as it enables a Maximum Availability Architecture, which helps save enormous amount of costs associated with both planned and unplanned downtime. This downtime has an enormous cost. There have been countless studies on this as to the way to compute the CIO Mag has pegged it on average at 1 million per hour but some other ones I have seen cite that for the financial industry it’s about 6X that cost. Whatever the cost comes to, it’s not worth the risk, and one of the reasons for why Oracle has invested heavily into this area, not just acquisitions alone but also with R&D investment as well.

There’s really no stopping Zero Downtime as both an important trend to the IT industry, and frankly there’s no stopping Oracle on this either.
