ODI Day 4 Review

And thus concludes OOW13. Kicking off the Customer Perspective for Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) was Paychex Inc. Talking about how they use ODI to create a near real time reporting database. They use Oracle Golden Gate (OGG) to replicate data to Exadata, then use ODI to transform it, and use Oracle Business Intelligence to run reports on top of it. In concert with OGG Paychex replicates data across ten clusters resulting in greater application integration, performance, scalability and availability. Vertex next spoke about how ODI helps build a SOA architecture, integrating across internal and third party sources and feeding them into business applications. The ability to understand the underlying SQL code helped the developers in quality and testing. Infinity Insurance then explained how versioning in ODI helped them audit, test and roll back multiple versions of jobs in their EDW implementations. Each of the customer also stressed the high developer adoption of the technology leading to faster time to value. A satisfying benefit, everyone concurred, was that the business trusted the data more and could see the positive impact of real time data in their LOBs. For a real close look at the customer panel check out panel moderator, Sandrine Riley’s blog entry here.

The session "Making the Move to Oracle Warehouse Builder" focused on customer best practices that help migrate from Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) to Oracle Data Integrator (along with a sneak preview of an OWB Migration utility). The session also explained how Knowledge Modules (pluggable out of the box packages) works and how they provide rapid development capabilities and are not black boxes which makes them highly extensible.

On day 4 the BI Applications team showed how they are using ODI as a platform now from version The three data load phases, the SDE (source dependent extract) the SIL (Source independent load) and PLP (Post Load Process) heavily exploit the ODI Knowledge Modules. Combined with Load Plans, ODI is a great addition to BI Apps to launch you into the future. The Load Plan Generator is a JEE library to automatically generate the optimal load plan for a set of fact groups. The installation and setup is also well documented in the cookbook found on the OTN.

Open world 2013 might have concluded but there are still a lot of news and technology lined up before OOW14.
