Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 Event Marker System

Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 includes a number of refinements to the Event Marker system. Using event markers enables GoldenGate processes to take a defined action based on an event in the data stream. This feature within Oracle GoldenGate simplifies methods to embed specific custom processing in the areas of error handling, alerts, and notification.

The event marker system effectively allows for DML driven workflows to be created within GoldenGate and enables customers to craft non-standard processing based on special events. There are a number of supported event actions including: trace, log, checkpoint before, suspend, abort, and several others. With 11gR1 events can now be triggered by DDL operations, plus variables can be passed in and out of the system to shell scripts.

Some good use cases for this feature are

  • Automatic switchover to the secondary system during planned outages
  • Better monitoring over source systems’ performance and automated switchover to the standby system in case of an outage with the primary system
  • Automatic switchover from initial load to changed data movement
  • Automatic synchronization of any type of batch processing taking place on both the source and target databases for database consistency
  • Automatic stoppage of the Delivery module to allow end-of-day reporting
  • Finding, tracking, and reporting on transactions that are of interest including the ones that do not have primary keys or transaction record numbers

Intelligent Conflict Detection and Resolution

Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate11gR2 has gone through a significant overhaul. The improvements that have been made to this area are substantial and will make it easier for customers to implement complex, heterogeneous GoldenGate configurations.

GoldenGate has provided methods for conflict detection and resolution for a number of past releases, but at Oracle we have the opportunity to take advantage of some of the great ideas in this area. Oracle has had feature rich conflict detection and resolution framework in other products, which has been implemented in Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2. These improvements are geared toward helping customers more easily implement advanced configurations that require conflict detection and resolution by providing a robust framework for conflict detection for all DML statements and resolution via pre-built methods, all with less code and simpler syntax than in prior releases.

Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 is available for our supported heterogeneous platforms, which includes Oracle Database, MySQL, Sybase ASE, SQL Server, and DB2 Linux, Unix, Windows, z/OS, plus DB2 on i Series, which is newly supported in this release.

Additional information on the Conflict Detection and Resolution capabilities can be found in our documentation

Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 New Feature: Integrated Capture

With the release of Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2, the Product Management team is very excited about the addition of Integrated Capture for the Oracle platform. Integrated capture is unique in the industry and unique to the Oracle database. It is not available on any other database platform. This new feature moves GoldenGate’s capture capabilities closer to the Oracle Database engine and is the foundation for Oracle GoldenGate on the Oracle Database platform over the long term.

It is important to note that Integrated Capture does not replace our classic Capture process. Both are available on the Oracle Database platform.

The Integrated Capture mechanism relies on Oracle’s internal log parsing and processing to capture DML transactions. By moving closer to the Oracle Database engine, Oracle GoldenGate can take advantage of new Oracle Database features and functionality more quickly.

For example, this new mechanism allows GoldenGate to support advanced features such as compression. Integrated Capture provides support for all flavors of Oracle compression, including hybrid columnar compression (EHCC) on Exadata, where as our “Classic” capture would not.

Integrated Capture supports two different deployment configurations; On-Source and Downstream.

The on-source deployment model is what most customers are familiar with. Oracle GoldenGate is executing on the database server capturing changes in real time. This is the default deployment method.

The other option is downstream, where the source database and the Oracle GoldenGate Capture process are on different machines. This method effectively off-loads the processing requirements to a second machine.

Customers may choose which option they prefer based on their requirements.

Additional information on Integrated Capture can be found in our documentation and the white paper “Oracle GoldenGate for Oracle”.

Reaching to the Holy Grail of Data Management

Pervasive, continuous access to trusted data. That’s the ultimate goal of data management. It enables to leverage data as an asset to create value for customers and the organization. It creates the strong foundation needed to move the business forward. How you get there is also critical. As with all IT initiatives using high performance solutions with low cost of ownership is another key requirement in today’s IT world. Oracle's  data integration product strategy focuses on helping customers achieve this ultimate goal with high performance and low TCO.

At OpenWorld, we will be showing how Oracle Data Integration products help you reach your data management goals, considering new trends in information management, such as big data and cloud computing. We will also provide an update on the latest product releases, such as Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2.

If you will be at OpenWorld, please join us on Monday Oct 1st 10:45am at Moscone West – 3005 to hear our VP of Product Development, Brad Adelberg, present "Future Strategy, Direction, and Roadmap of Oracle’s Data Integration Platform".

The Data Integration track at OpenWorld covers variety of topics and speakers. In addition to product management of Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Data Integrator, and Enteprise Data Quality presenting product updates and roadmap, we have several customer panels and stand-alone sessions featuring select customers such as St. Jude Medical, Raymond James, Aderas, Turkcell, Paychex, Comcast,  Ticketmaster, Bank of America and more. You can see an overview of Data Integration sessions here.

If you are not able to attend OpenWorld, please check out our latest resources for Data Integration and Oracle GoldenGate. In the coming weeks you will see more blogs about our products’ new capabilities and what to expect at OpenWorld.
