This is a great example of the evolution happening in Oracle Data Warehousing environments as customers consolidate databases into a single source of truth for their businesses with Oracle Exadata. Not only was Targetbase able to integrate large volumes of social, retail, and point-of-sale (POS) data, such as Web blogs, to drive richer and more actionable insights for their clients. They enabled real-time analytics scoring and consumer-specific text mining on large volumes of marketing-related data while achieving some great performance gains with up to 40x faster queries. Learn how Oracle Database compression features helped reduce their storage costs by 30%.

A few times a year, I'm asked to update the Oracle Database Reference Booklet. Each time, the number of customers benefiting from upgrading to the Oracle Database grows. Read for yourself how an airline cut analysis time for travel partner bookings from 10 hours to 10 minutes, helping staff develop better informed partner sales and marketing strategies. Or how a bank completed their database upgrade without disruption to their day-to-day operations and minimized system downtime for more than 2 million customers, who expect around the clock services. Or how a manufacturing company saved an expected US$609,000 on storage hardware costs. These are just of few of the customer who improved performance, provided better service for their customers and saved money with the Oracle Database.
Need a good reason to upgrade to the Oracle Database? Look no further.

Listen to Satish Zalavadia, Senior
DBA at Bank of America describes how Oracle Advanced
Compression and Secure
Files helped them accommodate
future data growth by reducing
their database storage footprint by 50% saving money and

Oracle Exadata Database Machine delivers extreme performance for Data Warehousing and OLTP workloads, It also provides the 'petabyte scalability' required to cost effectively manage the sheer volume of data collected and stored by enterprise customers.
Read how these customers address 'petabyte scalability' with Oracle Exadata Database Machine in their environments:
Turkcell manages 100 terabytes of compressed data—that's a whopping petabyte of uncompressed raw data—on Oracle Exadata. When combined with the analytics capabilities of Oracle Advanced Analytics, they can now complete antifraud analysis for large amounts of call-data records in just a few hours.
SK Telecom became the first mobile communications operator in Korea to
introduce rate plans with unlimited data usage. This led to a large
increase in data volumes and, as a result, the company’s data analysis
and verification processes became more complex. On average 40 billion
transactions are processed each day on Oracle Exadata Database Machine enabling the company to store 1 petabyte of raw
data. Now they can provide detailed, accurate information about their customers’ roaming
data usage while ensuring high availability and performance to support billions of transactions a day.

MetLife, a leading global provider of insurance, annuities and employee benefits, has been an Oracle customer and user for many years, and uses Oracle technology for many of its mission-critical applications. On top of the Oracle Database, they deployed business applications from Oracle such as PeopleSoft, Enterprise Performance Management solutions, and OBIEE.
For failover scenarios, MetLife deployed Oracle Data Guard a while back, and soon realized that with new capabilities introduced with Oracle Active Data Guard, internal global reporting functionality can easily be improved by generating reports from the open, and otherwise idle, standby database.
To increase internal resource utilization even more, MetLife made the decision to use Oracle Advanced Compression, that reduced disk space considerably for archiving requirements and production systems alike. In production environments, the savings were even multiplied as it also reduced the amount of data that gets shipped over the wire to, and stored at, every standby database.
Watch Margaret Maglione, Director of Oracle Implementation, explain how her team realized just that:

A few weeks ago I spoke with Satish Zalavadia, Senior DBA at Bank of America. Listen as he describes how Oracle Advanced Compression reduced their storage footprint by 50%. This huge reduction in storage utilization meant that no additional storage was needed to accommodate their data growth for one year even as their clients introduced more applications running against the database. In addition, they saw an 80% improvement of query performance as a result of storing LOB data in Secure Files.

You can reduce storage costs AND improve performance when you choose Oracle’s approach to managing data growth. Read how Information
Processing Center reduced their operational database resources by more than
400% using Oracle Advanced Compression. Likewise,
found that it increased the performance of its
PeopleSoft reporting environment by reducing the time to complete certain nightly
extracts from 12 hours to four. Deutsche
Börse AG used a combination of compression and partitioning to reduce their
storage requirements which had grown by 50% to 24 terabytes and achieve optimal performance by partitioning fact
tables with more than 1 terabyte. Health
Market Science also used this combination to manage data growth more cost effectively.
To learn how they did it, listen to Oracle Database expert Kevin Jernigan describe how to reduce your database storage footprint and costs.
Oracle's approach to managing data growth is just one of three compelling reasons to upgrade to Oracle Database 11g.
Have a happy and prosperous New Year!

Recently I interviewed Land O'Lakes, Seniro DBA, Joe Cornell. Listen as he describes the circumstances that lead to their deployment of Oracle Advanced Compression in their OBIEE environment. Their general ledger query performance improved up to 14 times faster and they reduced their overall storage footprint by 50% with zero impact on their users.
