Choose a smarter approach to manage data growth

You can reduce storage costs AND improve performance when you choose Oracle’s approach to managing data growth. Read how Information Processing Center reduced their operational database resources by more than 400% using Oracle Advanced Compression. Likewise, MetLife found that it increased the performance of its PeopleSoft reporting environment by reducing the time to complete certain nightly extracts from 12 hours to four.  Deutsche Börse AG used a combination of compression and partitioning to reduce their storage requirements which had grown by 50% to 24 terabytes and achieve optimal performance by partitioning fact tables with more than 1 terabyte. Health Market Science also used this combination to manage data growth more cost effectively.

To learn how they did it, listen to Oracle Database expert
Kevin Jernigan describe how to reduce your database storage footprint and costs.

Use these simple tools to help you compare the savings with and without compression and assess your storage environment for optimal performance and cost savings.

Oracle's approach to managing data growth is just one of  three compelling reasons to upgrade to Oracle Database 11g.

Have a happy and prosperous New Year!

Don't jeopardize your business when applications, servers, or data becomes unavailable

Because your data is a critical business asset, you depend on having it complete, accurate and available 24x7. Below, I’ve highlighted some key assets we've developed to help you ensure maximum availability.

In 2012, we introduced the Calmest IT guy in the world video series. Watch him to see what it takes to keep business systems available, protect business data from downtime, eliminate idle redundancy of standby servers and recover quickly from human errors.

If any of these situations look familiar you’ll appreciate how these customers addressed their high availability challenges with Oracle Database Solutions. First meet BarrièrePoker.fr who can now guarantee 24/7 availability for their online gaming platform thanks to their high-performance, scalable transactional platform with Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Active Data Guard replication services that eliminated idle redundancy in their standby database environment to better serve their 10,000 players and responds 7x Faster. Or check out ForeSee who used Oracle Active Data Guard for disaster recovery across their data centers to support data growth with a high performance clustered solution or Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre who created a complete contingency IT infrastructure to ensure security of their hospital records with Oracle Active Data Guard.

To learn how to deploy a highly available infrastructure in your environment, listen to Tom Kyte describe Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture best practices or Joe Meeks drill down on disaster recovery. Use can use these simple tools to help you assess your high availability infrastructure and calculate your cost of downtime.

However, to take advantage of many of these great capabilities you will need to upgrade to Oracle Database 11g. So let me end here to wish you a happy and prosperous new year with three compelling reasons to upgrade to Oracle Database 11g with Roy Swonger

Oracle Spatial and Graph – A year in review

What a great year for Oracle Spatial! Or shall I now say, Oracle Spatial and Graph, with our official name change this summer. There were so many exciting events and updates we had this year, and this blog will review and link to some of the events you may have missed over the year.

We kicked off 2012 with our webinar: Situational Analysis at OnStar with Oracle Spatial and Graph. We collaborated with OnStar’s Emergency Strategy and Outreach expert, Jeff Joyner ,on how Onstar uses Google Earth Visualization, NAVTEQ data and Oracle Database to deliver fast, accurate emergency services to its customers.

In the next webinar in our 2012 series, Oracle partner TARGUSinfo showcased how to build a robust, scalable and secure customer relationship management systems – with built-in mapping and spatial analysis, and deployed in the cloud. This is a very cool system using all Oracle technologies including Oracle Database and Fusion Middleware MapViewer. Attendees learned how to gather market insight, score prospects and customers and perform location analysis. The replay is available here.

Our final webinar of the year focused on using Oracle Business Intelligence tools, along with Oracle Spatial and Graph to perform location-aware predictive analysis. Watch the webcast here:

In June, we joined up with the Location Intelligence conference in Washington, DC, and had a very successful 2012 Oracle Spatial User Conference. Customers and partners from the US, as well as from EMEA and Asia, flew in to share experiences and ideas, and get technical updates from Oracle experts. Users were excited to hear about spatial-Exadata performance, and advances in MapViewer and BI. Peter Doolan of Oracle Public Sector kicked off the event with a great keynote, and US Census, NOAA, and Ordnance Survey Great Britain were just a few of the presenters. Presentation archive here.

We recognized some of the most exceptional partners and customers for their contributions to advancing mainstream solutions using geospatial technologies. Planning for 2013’s conference has already started. Please contribute your papers for consideration here. http://www.locationintelligence.net/

We also launched a new Oracle PartnerNetwork Spatial Specialization – to enable partners to get validated in the marketplace for their expertise in taking solutions to market. Individuals can also get individual certifications. Learn more here.

Oracle Open World was not to disappoint, with news regarding our next Oracle Spatial and Graph release, as well as the announcement of our new Oracle Spatial and Graph SIG board! Join the SIG today.

One more exciting event as we look to 2013. Spatial and location technologies have a dedicated track at the January BIWA SIG Summit – on January 9-10 in Redwood Shores, CA. View the agenda and register here: www.biwasummit.org.

We thank you for all your support during the year of 2012 and look towards an even more exciting 2013! Wishing you and your family a prosperous New Year and Happy Holidays!

Oracle Announces Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 and Enhanced Oracle Big Data Connectors

Enables Customers to Easily Harness the Business Value of Big Data at Lower Cost

Engineered System Simplifies Big Data for the Enterprise

Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 hardware features the latest 8-core Intel® Xeon E5-2600 series of processors, and compared with previous generation, the 18 compute and storage servers with 648 TB raw storage now offer:
  • 33 percent more processing power with 288 CPU cores;
  • 33 percent more memory per node with 1.1 TB of main memory;
  • and up to a 30 percent reduction in power and cooling
Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 further simplifies implementation and management of big data by integrating all the hardware and software required to acquire, organize and analyze big data. It includes:
  • Support for CDH4.1 including software upgrades developed collaboratively with Cloudera to simplify NameNode High Availability in Hadoop, eliminating the single point of failure in a Hadoop cluster;
  • Oracle NoSQL Database Community Edition 2.0, the latest version that brings better Hadoop integration, elastic scaling and new APIs, including JSON and C support;
  • The Oracle Enterprise Manager plug-in for Big Data Appliance that complements Cloudera Manager to enable users to more easily manage a Hadoop cluster;
  • Updated distributions of Oracle Linux and Oracle Java Development Kit;
  • An updated distribution of open source R, optimized to work with high performance multi-threaded math libraries

Webcast: Maximum Availability with Oracle GoldenGate

Make sure to register here for this upcoming live webcast, with great speakers, and a live Q&A chat session.
It is scheduled for Thursday, December 13th, 2012, at 10am Pacific Time.

There are no doubts about the strength, and depth, of Oracle's offerings for highly available database environments. But depending on the nature of your data center environments, your different uses cases and workloads, your service level agreements and expectations, there might still be some open questions about what the best solutions and architectures are to assure high availability and/or affordable, efficient disaster recovery.

Therefore, this webcast will answer questions such as:
