Five best practices for PaaS [Platform as a Service]

In the Fall of 2014, ComputerWorld published a report detailing the results from a survey conducted with 300 IT executives and practitioners worldwide. The questions ranged from type of applications being run on the cloud now and in the future, support for mission-critical apps, the challenges faced from an interoperability perspective, and more. The results highlighted some critical insights from these experts which for certain topics were surprisingly significantly aligned. Calling this phenomena [this alignment] the wisdom of the crowd, we bet that as the industry moves forward with the cloud initiative, IT leaders worldwide are increasingly adopting these practices, driving these to become best practices. Hence our attempt at culling these and putting these within an infographic, so its easily available at a birds eye view level to IT practitioners undertaking their cloud journey right now.

Oracle Reinvents Database Protection with Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance

Reinventing Database Protection

During his opening keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2014, Oracle Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison announced the general availability of Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance, the world's first and only engineered system designed specifically for Oracle Database protection. Oracle's Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (Recovery Appliance) is the first appliance ever to deliver zero data loss protection for critical Oracle Databases. When using today’s solutions to restore a database, businesses typically lose all data generated since the last backup—often hours to days of critical data.
The Recovery Appliance dramatically reduces the impact of backups on production servers and networks, virtually eliminating the need for lengthy backup windows. The cloud-scale architecture enables a single Recovery Appliance to manage the data protection requirements of thousands of databases, avoiding the cost and complexity of disparate backup systems.

Key Messages:

  • Eliminates data loss: Unique database integration enables continuous transport of redo data to the appliance, providing real-time protection for the most recent transactions so that databases can be restored without data loss.
  • Eliminates production impact: Backup algorithms integrated into Oracle Database send only changed data to the appliance, minimizing production database impact, I/O traffic, and network load. All expensive backup processing is offloaded to the Appliance.
  • Offloads tape archival: The Recovery Appliance can directly archive database backups to low-cost tape storage, offloading production database servers. Archival operations can run both day and night to improve tape drive utilization.
  • Enables restore to any point in time: The database change data stored on the Appliance can be used to create virtual full database copies at any desired point in time.
  • Delivers cloud-scale protection: A single Recovery Appliance can serve the data protection requirements of thousands of databases in a data center or region. Capacity expands seamlessly to petabytes of storage, with no downtime.
  • Protects data from disasters: The Recovery Appliance can replicate data in real time to a remote Recovery Appliance or to Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service to protect business data from site outages. Database blocks are continuously validated to eliminate data corruption at any stage of transmission or processing.

Oracle Database Focus Area Thought Leaders

Top sessions from our thought-leaders to plan for include the following:

  • Tom Kyte: Developers Rule the World (Again)
Way back in 1992, Oracle Database 7 was the programmer's database with stored procedures, triggers, precompilers, and so on. Then the introduction of the internet shifted the focus to operations, high availability, and related features. Kyte will explore how developers are taking control again and how Oracle Database is responding with new capabilities in the area of JavaScript object notation, new open source drivers, and much more.
  • Steven Feuerstein: The Whys and Wherefores of New PL/SQL Features in Oracle Database 12c
In this session Feuerstein examines a wide array of new features for PL/SQL developers. For example, the function result cache has been enhanced to support functions defined with invoker rights. Administrators can use the ACCESSIBLE BY clause to define whitelists of the program units that can execute subprograms in a package. And administrators can grant roles to PL/SQL program units rather than to schemas, delivering much greater access, control, and flexibility.
  • Maria Colgan: The Top Five Things to Know About Oracle Database In-Memory
This session explains in detail the top five things you need to know to get the most from Oracle Database In-Memory right out of the box. With easy-to-follow real-world examples, Colgan—Oracle's in-memory expert—explains exactly what steps to take to get up and running, and demonstrates the kinds of performance improvements to expect. Colgan always draws a big crowd, so this session is presented twice.
  • Patrick Wheeler: Multitenant: The Beating Heart of Database as a Service
As Wheeler puts it, Oracle Database as a service is built on three strong foundations: Oracle Multitenant as the enabling database architecture, Oracle Enterprise Manager for orchestration, and Oracle's engineered systems, such as Oracle Exadata and Oracle SuperCluster, as consolidation platforms. In this session, Wheeler explores how Oracle provides a total solution that truly delivers on the promise of database as a service.
  • Andrew Holdsworth: What the Real-World Performance Team Learns from Your Automatic Workload Repository Report
Workload Repository feature of Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c have been used for many years to understand the health and characteristics of a database instance. They also reveal many other things you may not have thought of. Like Sherlock Holmes, Holdsworth reveals what other secrets can be deduced.

Oracle Customers Secure Critical Encryption Keys with Oracle Key Vault

Centrally Manage Oracle Database Encryption Master Keys, Oracle Wallets, Java KeyStores and Other Credential Files

Encryption is widely recognized as the gold standard for protecting data privacy, but encryption is only as strong as its key management. Critical credential files such as Oracle Wallets, Java KeyStores, SSH key files and SSL certificate files are often widely distributed across servers and server clusters with error-prone synchronization and backup mechanisms. As organizations increasingly encrypt data at rest and on the network, securely managing all the encryption keys and credential files in the data center has become a major challenge.

At the same time, organizations also need to comply with stringent regulatory requirements for managing keys and certificates. Many global regulations and industry standards call for audits demonstrating that keys are routinely rotated, properly destroyed, and accessed solely by authorized entities.

To address the need for robust key management, Oracle today introduced Oracle Key Vault, a software appliance designed to securely manage encryption keys and credential files in the enterprise data center.

Read the press release and register for the August 21 webcast to learn how Oracle Key Vault
  • Centralizes Keys in a modern, secure, and robust key management platform
  • Secures, shares, and manages keys and secrets for the enterprise
  • Manages key lifecycle stages including creation, rotation, and expiration
Learn more: Oracle Key Vault enables customers to quickly deploy encryption and other security solutions.
