Autonomous Database on Dedicated Exadata Infrastructure progress report for 2020

I thought it appropriate to celebrate the end of a strangely auspicious year by remembering the good things and wishing all a very safe and joyful year ahead with 2021.

Autonomous Database is revolutionizing the way people think about and consume database capabilities for modern cloud applications. Autonomous is ushering in a new database era, providing a self-managing database experience allowing consumers to focus on their business instead of managing technology. 

Businesses are transitioning to this new way of thinking about database as a self-driving, self-securing and self-repairing service, consumed on a pay-per-use basis. Industry analyst Gartner has recently recognized Oracle’s Autonomous Database as the leader in all database critical capabilities.  

 

A recap of key capabilities released for Autonomous Database in 2020:

  • Autonomous Database on Exadata Cloud@Customer, bringing the autonomous experience and cloud pay-per-use consumption model to on-premises customers.
  • Exadata X8M for Autonomous Database.  The X8M takes database performance to heights unavailable in any other provider. The first Persistent Memory (PMEM) enabled database platform that leverages Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) and boasts <19uS response latency while pushing upwards of 16 million IOPS.  Read what analysts are saying about Exadata X8M for a Multi-Cloud strategy.
  • Autonomous Data Guard, providing a database aware replication that not only protects against site wide outages, but also protects against data corruption that goes uncaught in simple storage level replication found in other clouds.
  • Online Auto-Scaling for the only true pay-per-use database cloud service, where your resources instantaneously scale up and down with your incoming workload, no more paying for a possible peak and no more downtime to scale up to 100’s of cores.
  • Autonomous Maintenance policy extensions for our Enterprise class applications where customers prefer to have the Autonomous operations stage updates thru pre-production systems for trust and verify before updating their production instances.
  • Data Safe for Autonomous Database. Data Safe makes it easy to do Auditing and Compliance drift analysis along with other useful capabilities including masking and sub setting for development with sensitive data.
  • Access Control Lists for Autonomous Database. Provides network level separation at the database level within highly consolidated environments, a unique value proposition offered by Oracle with its Containerized database capabilities, a native feature of Autonomous Database.
  • PCI Compliance was obtained, a certification level under high demand from our financial services customers.
  • Performance Hub for Autonomous Database, which provides a cloud native experience for building high performance database applications similar to the tooling offered in Oracle’s Enterprise Manager.
  • Eclipse and Visual Studio IDE plug-ins that bring the Oracle Cloud API experience directly to the application developer’s preferred code development tooling, making it super simple to develop applications using Oracle’s Autonomous Database. 

 

The above list is accompanied by a whole host of other improvements in areas like encryption management, simplification of development and test lifecycle, operational insights thru metrics, alarms, notifications, budgeting and cost controls to name a few. The Autonomous Database team strives to deliver a service that makes a developer’s job simpler and an administrator’s job both simpler and more strategic.

Autonomous Database is delivering a set of capabilities not available in any other cloud provider, specifically a true mission critical set of feature functionality. Autonomous Database is always online even during planned and unplanned events such as routine software and security updates, failures in the underlying server or storage hardware, network and site level outages. In closing, despite some obvious challenges to doing business as usual this year, Autonomous Database development continues at a veracious pace. Oracle sees the Autonomous Database revolution as the most significant change in data management seen in the last 3 decades, since the change to client-server, and our investment and efforts in this area are proportional to the importance of this change. 

 

As we look forward into 2021 we will continue our aggressive progress and further enable our customers to focus on their business while leaving the technology concerns to Oracle.
