Stellarium

Guest Author

I've spend a few minutes playing with Stellarium. It's open source planetarium software. It allows you to set up your current position and get a labelled view of what you will see in the night sky from that location. What is particularly nice about the package is that it includes detailed pictures of many of the objects, so not only can you identify them, you can also see what they should look like.

Daryl, thanks for the link - I just downloaded and briefly played with Stellarium - pretty cool. Beats sitting in the garden with my 5-years-at-Sun-award telescope.

Thanks for the pointer--this looks like a great way to understand what I'm seeing in the sky each night.

Have you tried Celestia? This lets you get off the planet and go visit objects in 3D. It is absolutely stunning. And it's free. Check it out
    here.
