Who Inspires Us at Oracle: Women in Tech and Beyond

Beth Perry
Senior Content Manager, Oracle Advertising and CX

At Oracle, we're fortunate to be part of a global community that helps grow and develop strong, smart, and passionate women. And this month, the team came together to celebrate Women's History Month and the achievements of women in society, culture, and business.

We proudly accepted the 2021 theme of International Women's Day by "choosing to challenge"—we're challenging ourselves and others to call out inequality, to show support and solidarity, and to lift up those around us with praise and positivity.

Safra Catz, CEO, Oracle

To help us align our efforts, Oracle Women's Leadership (OWL) set out six pledges and invited us all to #ChooseToChallenge this month and throughout the year.

  • I pledge to challenge inequality.
  • I pledge to call out bias.
  • I pledge to actively question stereotypes.
  • I pledge to celebrate women's achievements.
  • I pledge to amplify voices not being heard.
  • I pledge to broaden perceptions.

We've enjoyed sharing ideas, giving well-deserved kudos to teammates, and most importantly, discussing how we can actively be part of the solution and help facilitate change.

As part of the conversation, we invited our amazing team of colleagues and partners to tell us about the women who motivate them in their daily lives or share their own inspirational messages. Here are a few of the quotes they shared:

"The more women help one another, the more we help ourselves. Acting like a coalition truly does produce results." Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, Founder of LeanIn.org

-Submitted by: Christina Mitine, Customer Success Strategic Program Manager, Oracle

“We have to change our own self-talk. Oftentimes, we impede our own progress because we don't have the confidence to say 'yes, I'm ready for this role,' 'yes, I can meet these challenges,' 'yes, I have the expertise and background that's necessary.' When we get out of our own way and truly bet on ourselves, that's when we start to create other people's confidence in us. Always bet on yourself.” Dr. Erika James, Dean of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, SurveyMonkey board member

-Submitted by: Leela Srinivasan, CMO at SurveyMonkey

“Don't mistake politeness for lack of strength.”Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice, Supreme Court

-Submitted by: Claudia Galvan, Principal Technical Program Manager, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

"We are actively appealing to women to apply for open positions at our company. We let moms take six-month leaves of absence with newborns and make sure that their existing jobs, as well as promotional opportunities, await them when they get back. We openly advertise the fact that Language I/O is a women-founded, women-run business, and this in turn attracts women to our company because they know they will find more empathy and opportunity here. We're also willing to speak out against societal bias against women in the startup world." Heather Morgan Shoemaker, CEO and Co-Founder of Language I/O

-Submitted by: Ivy Hughes, Marketing Director, Language I/O

“When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are.”Oprah Winfrey, Chairwoman and CEO of Harpo Productions, CEO and CCO of the Oprah Winfrey Network, Host, Author, Actor, Producer

-Submitted by: Tamsin Blanchard, Senior Webcast TV & Video Producer/Director, EMEA Region, Oracle

-Submitted by: Jacel Booth, Content Marketing Manager, Oracle Advertising and CX

"We all have experiences, knowledge, and access that can help others. Your time, your access, and your knowledge are powerful ways we can all pay it forward."Catherine Blackmore, Group Vice President of North America Customer Success, Oracle

-Submitted by: Christina Mitine, Customer Success Strategic Program Manager, Oracle

“We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change.” Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, Founder of LeanIn.org

-Submitted by: Shruti Tyagi, IT Consultant, Managed Cloud, Oracle

“Every bit of content you create should be to please the customer or prospect—not your boss or client.” Ann Handley, Chief Content Officer, MarketingProfs, and Author

-Submitted by: Lisa Marcyes, Director, Global Social Media, Oracle

“When I considered all the people who had bet on me and won big, I knew without a doubt it was time to bet on myself.” Angela Connor, Founder and CEO, Change Agent Communications

-Submitted by: Melissa Sargeant, Chief Marketing Officer, Litmus

“Being a Black woman, being a woman in general, on a team of all men, means that you are going to have a unique voice. It's important to embrace that.” Erin Teague, Director of Product Management, YouTube at Google

-Submitted by: Veronika Kotyzova Kubu, Senior Product Manager, Oracle NetSuite

“We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women's voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored.” Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, Founder of LeanIn.org

-Submitted by: Shruti Tyagi, IT Consultant, Managed Cloud, Oracle
