E-Commerce Learnings from 2015: Preparing to Win in 2016

Oracle Commerce Cloud recently partnered with Internet Retailer to bring you 2015 e-commerce learnings (from me!) to apply to this year's holiday season. 

Did you know that:

  • 2015 was the first year ever that Google mobile searches surpassed desktop and more than half of traffic to retail e-commerce sites came from mobile devices?
  • Mobile accounted for nearly 1 in 5 holiday purchases last year?
  • 90% of shoppers use their mobile devices to help make purchase decisions while in-store?
  • Email marketing is still effective, bringing in 20% of holiday e-commerce orders (just behind organic search as a marketing channel)?
  • Likelihood of purchase peaks for products with an overall average star rating between 4.2 and 4.5 (products with five-star ratings are perceived to be too good to be true--oh ye of little faith!)?* 
  • On average, 20% of people use social login (usually Facebook) vs. traditional login?**

As a result of the presentation and some of the questions I've received since, I'll be posting a couple of follow-ups. The first will be on the anatomy of an e-commerce post-mortem with some example detail. The second will focus on how to conduct an e-commerce platform assessment. Given the rise of mobile shopping and search, I also encourage you to read a bit more on creating engaging mobile shopping experiences.
