But when Michael Murphy, the firm’s corporate manager of project controls, looks at these resources, he doesn’t see schedules. “That's like a big shopping mall” full of data, he says.
The company is using the Oracle Cloud and Oracle Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management. It's enabling Swinerton to turn up-to-date information from this data mall into custom but automatically generated reports for the firm’s internal staff and partners.
The cloud offers the opportunity “to design custom reports for the guys at the project and all the way up to the top suite in the organization,” Murphy said during a presentation at Oracle Industry Connect 2018.
“As soon as the information is updated, such as someone's status, dates, etc, it can be instantly published when it's in the cloud. That means if I run a report, that report is current.”
The list of Swinerton’s report recipients is long and varied. It includes: owners, project managers, quality control managers, safety officials, and people on job sites - as well as division managers.
But what’s special about the reports is that they’re tailored for each group, so people see only the information that’s essential for their roles. “We give them [answers] to the standard questions they ask every week,” Murphy says.
Fortunately, it doesn’t take an army of Swinerton personnel to slice and dice mountains of data to create these custom reports—they’re generated as part of an automated workflow process.
“What that means is if we have two key people who need to have this report on Tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m., it just automatically goes to the mailbox,” he says.
The technical underpinning that makes that possible is Primavera P6 EPPM and the Oracle Cloud. “It's in the source of truth,” Murphy explains. “The database crunches the information that we request and then it delivers all those reports.”
This targeted information noticed and appreciated by recipients, including owners. “When we start to deliver this to owners, they are like, ‘This should be mandatory on every job.’" Murphy says. “That's the way they feel about it.”
