Leading Nations Unite to Tackle One of the World’s Biggest Energy Projects

Every country in the world is concerned with energy, so it is not surprising that nations are joining forces to address this critical resource. The European Union, Japan, the former Soviet Union, and the United States joined in 1986 to collectively pursue the design for a large international fusion facility.

One of the world's most ambitious energy projects

ITER is one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world. Seven member countries (the original four, plus China, India, and Korea) signed an agreement in 2006, launching the legal international entity, ITER (“The Way” in Latin). The ITER members represent three continents, over 40 languages, half of the world's population, and 85 percent of global gross domestic product.

Today, in southern France, 35 nations are collaborating to build the world's largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars. The Project Management Institute recently named ITER to PMI's Most Influential Projects 2020 list. 

ITER and nuclear energy

France may have been selected as the location for this potentially world changing project due to the country’s expertise in nuclear energy. With the largest share of nuclear electricity in the world, the country derives about 75 percent of its electricity from nuclear energy.*

ITER, the very definition of a megaproject, requires robust proven tools and systems to manage its size and complexity. We are proud to recognize ITER with the 2019 Oracle Excellence Award in the category of  Enterprise-wide Standardization in Energy and Resources for their implementation of Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management.

ITER selected Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management to manage 270,000 activities and over 250 projects, with worldwide access for multiple users. Oracle’s Primavera P6 enables the ITER project to standardize planning, scheduling processes, and best practices for members and contractors. Primavera P6 EPPM has provided greater consistency, meaningful metrics, and standardized reports

ITER has achieved standardization and better communication—both critical aspects of a megaproject. The organization has also implemented a universal project control language and structure with all parties across 35 countries through their implementation of Primavera P6 EPPM.

Konig says: “Oracle’s Primavera P6 sets the standard for the high-performance planning and scheduling needed to manage highly complex multifaceted projects.”

Select award winning achievements include:

•    Integrating schedules within three days of receiving data
•    Running all the reports and sharing them with stakeholders within approximately three weeks. Without Oracle’s Primavera P6, ITER could not communicate monthly on issues, risks, and opportunities linked to the project, limiting its ability to take timely corrective action
•    Analyzing the impacts of changes on project cost, budget, and critical path using a single tool
•    Ensuring uniformity, control, and security profiles while sharing detailed work packages with contractors
