Artificial intelligence is increasingly unlocking new levels of insight for the construction industry, helping to improve decision-making to mitigate risk and accelerate performance.

Amid this evolving landscape for AI, a new Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Construction is building a community to lead AI implementation across the industry.

In a recent LinkedIn Live discussion, now available to watch on demand, Oracle Industry Innovation Labs Vice President Burcin Kaplanoglu hosts a stimulating conversation about the institute’s mission to facilitate AI and machine learning to solve challenges facing engineering and construction leaders.

Kaplanoglu is joined by the institute’s Burcu Akinci, associate dean of engineering and professor at Carnegie Mellon University; and Mani Golparvar-Fard, associate professor, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and chief technology officer at Reconstruct. Kaplanoglu is also involved, chairing a committee of the institute’s board.

Some 90 leading organizations are involved with the first-of-its-kind institute, which was created for the application of AI in design, construction, and operation of buildings and infrastructure systems.

Panelists on the LinkedIn Live discussion highlight the institute’s value to unlock the potential that AI holds for construction.

The institute also says it will lead the industry in AI implementation and not wait for others to develop AI tools for them.

“The institute is an opportunity for us to streamline what the construction industry, and specifically, technology companies and startups, are expecting academics to be working on, find a process to translate that into creating products, and make sure that industries are aware of the short-term impact of the solutions that are being adopted,” says Golparvar-Fard. “We want to bring that community together and realize the impact that we’ve been talking about for quite some time.”

The institute is funded by National Science Foundation and Discovery Partners Institute and is managed by the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Carnegie Mellon University, and Discovery Partners Institute.
