, our Director of Internet Analysis at Oracle Internet Intelligence, presented this Tuesday, October 15 at RIPE 79 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The presentation centered on Doug’s original research on BGP AS path prepending and the unintended vulnerabilities created by the practice.
BGP AS path prepending is a common practice among network operators – in fact – much more common than anyone, including our team, had realized. Doug’s research discovered that up to 8% of the IPv4 and 5.6% of the IPv6 global routing tables presently prepended to essentially everyone. This risk in this practice is that long AS paths incur risk of disruption in the event another AS originate the same prefix with a shorter AS path.
Why might a network operator choose to prepend paths and what vulnerabilities does it cause? Read to learn more.
Doug’s presentation highlights Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s commitment to internet security. We want our enterprise customers to feel confident moving their sensitive workloads to Oracle Cloud and we consider ourselves trusted partners and stewards of the global internet.
