Mentioned RISC to x86 migrations a couple blogs ago and now there is a new white paper out by Oracle on just this topic. The white paper goes into detail on the Oracle Linux and Database installation. It also shows how to use the free Oracle SQL Developer tool to migrate the data:
Migrating from IBM DB2 AIX to Oracle Linux Sun x86
Seems logical for Oracle to announce a database appliance for small to mid-size companies as Exadata was too big for these companies:
This announcement reminds me of an information week article I just read titled "Appliances: Just How Many Toasters Do You Need?'. The article discusses the need for both virtualization and specialized software/hardware appliances. Article also discusses Oracle Exadata or mainframe for large database workloads. Now there is a new 'toaster' for small and medium size database workloads.
Check out these new hardware and software integrated solutions from Oracle Sun (they are not Exa* machines):
They offer a number of solutions not offered by VBlock: Oracle DB, Oracle WebLogic, OS and end to end management. Be interesting to see how much adoption these machines get given the long time VBlock has been around and the Exa* focused strategy at Oracle.
