OpenWorld Recap - Oracle Cloud Application Foundation with WebLogic, Coherence, and more….

Interest in Cloud and Mobility drove significant focus on Oracle Cloud Application Foundation products at this year’s Oracle OpenWorld . In case you missed it, here is a recap:

Oracle WebLogic Server received significant limelight in Executive Vice President Thoman Kurian’s keynote -- The Oracle Cloud Platform: Database as a Service. Java as a Service. Complementing the existing Oracle Cloud Platform Services, the new Oracle Java as a Service provides full control of dedicated Oracle WebLogic Server clusters, supports any Java application, and gives users greater flexibility and choice over their services.

In the classic roadmap session by CAF vice president of product management Mike Lehmann, Mike focused on the recent 12.1.2 release. The session provided insights into how Oracle is evolving this infrastructure to be the next-generation application foundation for its customers to build on in a private cloud setting, Oracle's vision, product plans, and roadmap for this server infrastructure, and how it will be used in the rapidly maturing cloud infrastructure space. We hope the presentation helped you make key decisions about running your enterprise applications on Oracle's enterprise Java server foundation.

Oracle Coherence provided a many sessions at OpenWorld, focused around improving the customer experience with real-time data processing and application scalability to meet mobile and cloud demands. Many customers were excited to learn that Coherence can now update the data cache in real-time, delivering on the expectations of instantaneous updates. All sessions were well-attended, with several customers noting that the 12c release of Coherence was helping them solve strategic problems for both their organization and their own customers.

Developers, Mobile and Cloud!

Chris Tonas kicked off exciting development trends in his General Session “Emerging Trends in Application Development” which covered Oracle’s perspective in addressing the development opportunities in mobile and cloud environments. Mobile continues to be a dominant topic and Chris discussed real-world applications built with Oracle ADF Mobile, a Java based hybrid-mobile framework that helps Java developers build hybrid-mobile apps for iOS and Android from one code base. Java’s mantra to write once, deploy to many – lives on in the mobile arena!

Furthering Oracle’s focus on mobile and cloud computing trends, Chris introduced Oracle Mobile Cloud Services, a mobile backend as a service (MBaaS) that helps mobile app developers readily create more powerful, sophisticated applications that tap into enterprise backend services and simplify enterprise mobile connectivity. Running Mission-Critical Applications? Customers say why they choose Oracle WebLogic

Is a 'free' application server the right fit for your datacenter? Consider this: What you’ll save on license fees will not balance the loss of benefits such as a thoroughly tested, integrated solution with a complete roadmap and upgrade path. Do you want to consolidate and eventually create a cloud-ready datacenter? A 'free' solution will cost you heavily in the long term.

Join the live webcast to hear first-hand from Geoff Brown, CEO, Machine-To-Machine Intelligence (M2MI) Corporation his experience comparing Oracle WebLogic to other application servers. Learn from Oracle experts how this enterprise-grade application server is designed for:

  • Mission-critical applications that require absolute reliability
  • Advanced administration and management, including automatic, dynamic scaling
  • Enterprisewide deployment
  • Full-stack virtualization, enabling your cloud initiatives

Did you know that WebLogic offers the lowest TCO of all application servers?

Crimson Consulting Group just published a whitepaper, titled “Cost of Ownership Analysis: Oracle WebLogic Server vs. JBoss”. In this whitepaper Crimson estimated that JBoss Application Server costs more than WebLogic Server after 2 years and as much as 35% more over 5 years.  This cost differential is primarily due to the following reasons:

1.  Oracle WebLogic Server enjoys significant ease-of-use and productivity advantages over JBoss, enabled by a robust array of available tools for configuration, administration, and management.

2.  These ease-of-use and productivity advantages translate to savings in both the time and the cost of the people required to implement, administrate, and operate the system – resulting in the 35 percent savings versus performing the same activities with JBoss.

According to Crimson, “The cost advantage that JBoss enjoys by offering free software is cut in half by the time the application goes live for the first time, cut in half again by the end of the first year after purchase, and completely eliminated before the 18-months-from-purchase mark.  From that point onwards, WebLogic Server is less expensive on a TCO basis – an advantage that grows every year, based on its 50 percent per year operating cost advantage.”

If the numbers are not convincing enough, please check out the customer quotes.  All the quotes are from customers who have used or evaluated Oracle WebLogic Server and/or JBoss.  The conclusions were based on in-depth interviews with staff of ten organizations representing 16 unique application server deployments that include Oracle WebLogic Server and JBoss.

How to go from Mainframe to the Cloud?

Running applications on IBM mainframes is expensive, complex, and hinders IT responsiveness. The high costs from frequent forced upgrades, long integration cycles, and complex operations infrastructures can only be alleviated by migrating away from a mainframe environment.  Further, data centers are planning for cloud enablement pinned on principles of operating at significantly lower cost, very low upfront investment, operating on commodity hardware and open, standards based systems, and decoupling of hardware, infrastructure software, and business applications. These operating principles are in direct contrast with the principles of operating businesses on mainframes. By utilizing technologies such as Oracle Tuxedo, Oracle Coherence, and Oracle GoldenGate, businesses are able to quickly and safely migrate away from their IBM mainframe environments. Further, running Oracle Tuxedo and Oracle Coherence on Oracle Exalogic, the first and only integrated cloud machine on the market, Oracle customers can not only run their applications on standards-based open systems, significantly cutting their time to market and costs, they can start their journey of cloud enabling their mainframe applications.

  • Oracle Tuxedo re-hosting tools and techniques can provide automated migration coverage for more than 95% of mainframe application assets, at a fraction of the cost
  • Oracle GoldenGate can migrate data from mainframe systems to open systems, eliminating risks associated with the data migration
  • Oracle Coherence hosts transactional data in memory providing mainframe-like data performance and linear scalability
  • Running Oracle software on top of Oracle Exalogic empowers customers to start their journey of cloud enabling their mainframe applications

Join us in a series of events across the globe where you you'll learn how you can build your enterprise cloud and add tremendous value to your business. In addition, meet with Oracle experts and your peers to discuss best practices and see how successful organizations are lowering total cost of ownership and achieving rapid returns by moving to the cloud.
