As we approach this year’s Oracle OpenWorld, I wanted to highlight one of the primary customer appreciation events. Each year the Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation Awards are given to Oracle customers for their cutting-edge solutions. Winners were selected based on the uniqueness of their business case, business benefits, level of impact relative to the size of the organization, complexity and magnitude of implementation, and the originality of architecture.

Last year the Cloud Application Foundation customers receiving this award presented two very unique stories. One was from Hotelbeds, an accommodation wholesaler servicing over 50,000 hotels across 183 countries, using Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Coherence to help fuel sustained company growth. Hotelbeds sells 16 million hotel room nights per year and has experienced consistent double-digit growth over the past decade. As the company continued to expand, it realized that its current IT infrastructure environment, which had been comprised of various open source application servers, like Tomcat and Resin, had become too complex, disparate and costly to manage and its middle-tier database cache could no longer scale to serve the company’s busiest seasons. After undergoing a rigorous evaluation process that included analyzing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of Oracle WebLogic Server versus open source application servers, Hotelbeds decided to migrate its entire applications ecosystem to Oracle WebLogic Server. By consolidating onto Oracle WebLogic Server, Hotelbeds was able to reduce cost and risk and increase efforts to streamline their data center. Additionally, Hotelbeds opted to replace its existing open source caching systems MemCached and EHCache with Oracle Coherence. In transactional tests prior to implementation, Oracle Coherence significantly out-performed Hotelbeds’ previous caching system in terms of performance, scalability and reliability. By consolidating its application server environment with Oracle WebLogic Server, Hotelbeds anticipates it will reduce its operating costs by nearly 25 percent and also eliminate the risk of running their business critical applications on unsupported platforms. The other story from Nike, a globally recognized brand, discussed how the Nike Plus Digital Sports Platform utilizes Coherence Grid in unique ways. Nike takes advantage of Coherence as a traditional cache using both cache-aside and cache-through patterns. It has developed a horizontally scalable, distributed, event processing architecture which ensures accuracy and consistency of cached data compared to pull model. This has resulted in faster consumer experience as it uses partitioning & underlying node affinity to schedule & execute 100s of 1000s of jobs across grid. The architecture is meant to scale reliably upto over 8M users and expected to double this year.
